How to score CLB10 in IELTS – A beginner’s guide.

There are several different approaches to attempting the IELTS exam. While some might be more
effective than others, I believe that one shoe does not fit all.

First, it is important to understand that IELTS is a test of how well you write, listen, speak, and read in
English. So, it is vital that each of the 4 modules are given equal attention.

A rule of thumb: If you are good at spoken English, then you need to only focus on the tricks to answer
the questions, as well the things to avoid in the exam. If, however, you are not so good at speaking
English then you would need to put in some extra efforts to revise the basics.

Let’s get into it...

Some important points:

- E2, E2 and E2! E2 IELTS is the best resource for preparing for the test. Their videos are to the point and
will not waste your time. Jay from E2 is the best teacher!

Jo E2 ne bola woh pathar par lakeer. Have faith in Jay and follow his steps strictly. Very important point.

- Do not be afraid to re-visit old primary school textbooks. They were made to lay the foundations of
good grammar, so it doesn’t hurt to refer to them occasionally.

- Do not take any unnecessary risks. Do not use any sentences or words which you are not comfortable
with.

- A reliable benchmark to gauge the accuracy of your sentences is to question yourself: Does it sound
good when I say it out loud?

- Netflix and chill minus the chill. There is no chilling when you have an IELTS exam coming up. Watching
Netflix is so important. I cannot stress this enough. It helps you develop your reading, listening, and
speaking skills.

That’s 3 modules, while you enjoy yourself! So, watch as much as you can.

- Believe in yourself and attempt with confidence

- Do not stress over the exam. Seriously, don’t do it. Stress creates chemicals inside your brain that
makes you act weird.

LISTENING:

First step to working towards this skill is very simple.

Attempt the 40-minute test on YouTube, then at the end of the video compare your answers. How much
did you score? Was it good? Was it bad?

No matter what you scored, attempt the same test again. Did you improve your score? No?

Attempt it a third time.

At this point you would start to predict what is about to come in the next audio. You would have a
better understanding of the context of the discussion. Which brings me to the main point of listening –
CONTEXT.

Context is important not just because it gives you an understanding of the right answer, but it also helps
you if you find yourself in trouble and have to take a guess at the answer. Take an intelligent guess, if
you have to.

Focus really hard on the audio and try to predict what he / she is about to say.

In the exam you get plenty of time to read the question before the audio begins. Try to use that time to
understand where this conversation might be heading towards.

Practice, Practice, Practice!

READING:

Start by watching Jay’s video linked below:

TITLED: Understand IELTS Reading in JUST 40 minutes!

In this video he explains the different question types you might encounter in your reading exam.

Some are harder than others, but most of them are relatively straightforward.

If you find it difficult to understand the questions then, for practice, I suggest you re-visit your primary
school exercises or just search on google: “Reference to the context questions”

Reference to the context was an exercise which teachers used to teach in school. This exercise almost
perfectly mimics the IELTS reading exam, but a bit easier.

Build up your understanding of different basic paragraphs and then move onto the actual exam on
YouTube.

SPEAKING:

This module is very easy for the ones who are fluent in English. unfortunately, vast majority of people
are not so fluent, and there’s nothing wrong with that.

What is wrong is the fact that this vast majority is not doing anything to improve their spoken English.

So how can one go about improving his talking skills?

Well, the easiest method which I would recommend is watching a show you like on Netflix and repeat
the dialogues. This helps because you are already aware of the context in which this dialogue is being
used. Re-create it and use it frequently.

Remember, if it sounds good then it probably is. If it sounds funny, google what you’re saying.

The examiner wants to hear you speak English naturally. You will be awarded points if you spoke
sentences which you are 100% comfortable with. The examiner can detect when you are repeating a
memorized script so don’t do that.
Also, don’t take any risks in IELTS speaking exam. Its better to speak using simple sentences than to mess
up a complex sentence.

Follow Jay’s PPF method. Its super simple.

WRITING:

The second most frightening module 😃

Acing this module requires time and good preparation. Let’s start with the writing checklist:

1. Identify the Question Type

2. Using the E2 Standard Format

3. Re-writing practice

4. Complex Sentences

5. Tricks

So, in order to start writing correctly, you will need to understand the 5 question types. Watch the
below video for an explanation:

IELTS Writing Task 2 | TWO ESSENTIAL PARAGRAPH STRUCTURES with Jay!

It is very important to understand what the question is asking you. So, you need to learn from this video
and memorize the 5 question types. Each question type requires a different answer, but with Jay’s
standard format, you will need to make small modifications to the format.

Format:

1. Understand the 3-step introduction by watching the below video:

IELTS Writing Task 2: The 3 Sentence Introduction by Jay!

2. Understand the body and conclusion by watching the below video:

TITLED: E2 IELTS: Writing Task 2 | TOP TIPS YOU NEED TO KNOW with Jay!

The standard format to follow is:

Introduction

Sentence 1 = Write a neutral background sentence

Sentence 2 = Re-write the question in different words

Sentence 3 = “This essay will discuss how….”

Sentence 1 = Introduce the first discussion point

Sentence 2 = Explain this discussion point

Sentence 3 = Give example which supports this discussion point

Sentence 4 = Close this discussion point by repeating the point using different words.

Sentence 1 = Introduce the second discussion point

Sentence 2 = Explain this discussion point

Sentence 3 = Give example which supports this discussion point

Sentence 4 = Close this discussion point by repeating the point using different words.

Conclusion

Sentence 1 = “In conclusion this essay discussed…..”

Sentence 2 = “In my opinion….” (IF REQUIRED)

The format which Jay from E2 recommends is straightforward and can be used for each question type.
You just need to watch his video for each of the question types and learn which question required what
modification to the standard format.

Re-writing Practice: This is especially important because this skill comes in handy during your writing
test. The ability to re-write any sentence is so useful that it will help you steer through the tight corners
of the essay topic.

Simple way to practice is to take any sentence and re-write it in different ways. Then take another
sentence and do the same. Keep making different variations of the same sentence until you get tired.

Trust me this will help you immensely during your exam.

Try this technique with the essay introduction, then first paragraph, then second paragraph and finally
conclusion.

When you have the ability to re-write the whole essay using different sentences which mean the same
thing, then you will be ready to score higher in the actual exam.

Complex Sentences: Watch the below video for a detailed explanation about using complex sentences

Tricks:

IELTS writing can be aced with writing tricks. By tricks I mean there are things which you need to include
in your answer and there are things which you absolutely don’t need to include in your answer.

Again, I would advise you watch all of Jay’s videos on YouTube to get a better understanding of what
kind of tricks are used in your essay.

Keep it simple and don’t overthink your essay.

I hope this guide helps you in your studies and I pray you get the score which you desire, and rightfully
deserve.
