CHAPTER I

The Disadvantage of the Coronavirus to the Businesses within the Philippines during the Pandemic
Holy Cross College 2

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

"Coronavirus has crossed species to infect human populations through saliva or

discharge of nose when sneezes in close contact of the people. This provisionally

called 2019 novel coronavirus, was first identified in Wuhan, China, in persons

exposed to seafood or wet market. It can be transmitted from human-to-human that

causes several diseases (Stanley Perlman, 2020)." The virus has spread worldwide

easily, affecting the citizens and their businesses.

According to the study of Price Waterhouse Coopers and Lybrand, global

markets in the Philippines and businesses are most affected by the virus. They are

drove to find solutions to overcome the implications of the pandemic to survive it.

However, the existing business plans may not be enough to gain higher sales.

Thousands of businesses were experiencing bankruptcy because there were

fewer sales. They have lost their existing customers which is very unsatisfactory.

Given this situation, it can negatively affect not just the businesses but also their

potential employees. Most companies are forced to terminate their employees because

of lesser sales. Also, there were not enough opportunities within the Philippines

because of the threat of the disclose problem.

3

If it is left ignored, as Nuno Fernandes stated (2020), this problem will also

create a pessimistic effect on the economy through a recession because large numbers

of businesses are most likely to fall out. Additionally, more jobs will be at risk.

Therefore, this will negatively affect the citizens of the country, for they will lose their

source of income. The impacts of coronavirus on businesses will not only affect their

performance but also, their future stability.

In fact, in the study of Price Waterhouse Coopers and Lybrand, people cannot

also cope up with their bills or financial responsibilities because there were

insufficient businesses to sustain them. If this will be added to the case, then their

children will have a hard time experiencing this kind of situation.

Thus, the main goal of the study is to address the impacts of coronavirus on

businesses within the Philippines to come up with concrete conclusions. The

researcher aims to evaluate how to respond to this business setting for the sake of the

country. Besides, surpassing this challenge is a big help by benefitting everyone. The

researcher aims to seek ways to alleviate the problem caused by the virus for the re-

opening of small and big businesses. Since it is reported that the Gross Domestic

Product of the country is falling, brought by the series of lockdowns and quarantines

imposed by the government, it has lead to dramatic changes in how businesses should

behave. Studying the given problem will discover new doors for great opportunities

deserve by each one. Hence, the researcher may want everyone to work together to

overcome this problem.

Review of Related Literature

This section includes journals, books, or literature that served as the basis in

defining the variables of this study. This helped the researchers to clearly understand

the present study that was conducted.

As stated by (Ang, 2020), the virus has made a huge impact in stopping the

possible growth of the country. It forced businesses to stop running like they cannot go

on with the change brought by it. They were struggling to cope up with the financial

strain added by mounting pressures on it. The results suggest that the pandemic had

already caused massive dislocation among small and big businesses just several

months after its onset. In the Philippines, most of the businesses had temporarily

closed, and nearly all of these closures were due to the outbreak of the virus.

Businesses must turn massive challenges into meaningful change for their

innovation. Since this virus will show no mercy to anyone, navigating the financial

and operational challenges of it will help know the things that must be done. When the

lockdown strikes, Asian Development Bank has conducted a survey identifying the

impacts of the virus on the business community. The report provides a rich set of

initial facts to support the revival of the Philippine enterprises hurt by the virus. Small

5

and mid-sized businesses have experienced bankruptcy as the emerging programs

have proven critical, which is unsatisfactory.

The pandemic touched nearly all industries especially the Philippines, which is

now at its weakest point. Overall businesses' stability has been drastically impacted as

half of them reported that they need extensions to pay for their rentals. Businesses that

belong in different industries are striving hard to stand up again amidst the dilemma

brought by the virus. They are hoping that after all the challenges, they will rise again

as payroll for their sacrifices.

The latest work by (Michael Boyle, 2020) reveals that there is a significant

decline in the economic activity across the economy of the country lasting for months.

It was caused by most businesses who were threatened by the virus. The economy is

experiencing economic shock affecting the status of the country as it is reported that

the Gross Domestic Product has dropped by 2.2% in the last quarter. It is because

businesses were started to processed fewer sales which have stopped the economic

growth. Their main purpose is to boost economic performance by introducing products

and good services which became impossible at the moment.

The Asian Development Bank has so far provided about a billion in loans and

grants to support existing businesses. They can use these to continue operating so that,

the economy will not suffer more. You may be only seen businesses as profitable

organizations to produce money yet, they are also assets for the good performance of

The Disadvantage of the Coronavirus to the Businesses within the Philippines during the Pandemic
Holy Cross College 6

the economy. Also, the pandemic had clear consequences to the economy as the crisis

has been acutely felting the Filipinos. With the vulnerability of businesses, the country

has left with only debt.

However, the economy is expected to rebound once businesses are started to

become active again. The case is just that, it includes a slower than expected recovery

in the Philippines. Businesses must be considered working not until the country will

assure its stability in this field. The effects of coronavirus on businesses have a longer

tail compared to some areas. It only shows that businesses are important in the field of

success.

The latest study by (Herrfeldt, 2020) reveals that businesses' bankruptcy due to

the pandemic may lead to the termination of the employees. Since the virus is

spreading very quickly, people tend to not go outside and just stay in their homes to

secure their safeties. Because of that case, businesses have lost their customers, the

reason why they have been gaining nothing from the past months. Others started

thinking of alternative ways to continue their production because they believed that

they can still make it. Although, in the middle of their trial, is the evolution of the

virus causing thousands of life in danger.

The Department of Labor and Employment started freeing the children

laborers that is why businesses will experience hardships more than expected. The

impact of coronavirus on their productivity is never been easy. They were losing some

The Disadvantage of the Coronavirus to the Businesses within the Philippines during the Pandemic
7

investments at the same time as losing their employees because of insufficient salary

to pay them. Because of the said situation, businesses will most likely to fall-out and

will have nothing left. However, they must respond positively to this situation.

Businesses should respond to the financial and operational challenges of

coronavirus while identifying the needs of their people and customers. They need to

remember that there is always a journey for them to recover and continue. The

pandemic may have impacted them and shoot them to their vulnerable point yet, they

must turn disadvantages into advantages. With the pandemic continuing the peak in

some markets and most businesses, strengthening their faith will be their only hope for

these hard times.

Purpose of the Study

This topic will help people to expand their knowledge to raise awareness for

the possible things that might come. You will be able to understand why businesses

should keep on working and functioning surely because of their capability to help

people together with their country. All the knowledge that can gain can be shared with

the citizens to use for strengthening what must be to increase the resources and stock

to generate more sales and profits. You will find yourself developing your abilities for

the betterment of the economy through implying businesses to grow up into the next

level.

The Disadvantage of the Coronavirus to the Businesses within the Philippines during the Pandemic
Holy Cross College 8

The researcher is worried about the sufferings that may encounter even more

than this. Besides, a simple implication might lead to lots of opportunities lost. The

researcher intends to show how the downfall of the businesses may cause

impossibilities. However, the business industry is trying to make it up to the new

normal, it will take time. These trials are for the future benefit of everyone. Since

businesses were born to serve the people, it will be a good idea to push them to be

bolder amidst the pandemic as they are trying to cope up with it.

The purpose of this study does not only focus on identifying the disadvantages

of the current situation to the businesses within the Philippines. It also contributes to

certain industries in the business field addressing the needs for the new normal. The

study also sought an explanation as to how businesses' productivity persisted despite

the pandemic. Since people are all aware of the huge contribution of businesses in

different fields, this study will expand their knowledge, boost their strength, and test

their minds to develop applicable solutions.

Theoretical Framework

The study is anchored on the theoretical support of the model of businesses by

Peter Drucker (2010-2011) the root cause of businesses problem, where it causes the

business crisis is not about the things that are being done poorly. It is not all about

doing inappropriate things but indeed, the right things are somehow done regressively

especially, in times of struggles. Most of the organizations have the same problem.

The Disadvantage of the Coronavirus to the Businesses within the Philippines during the Pandemic
9

Truthfully, reality changes, and businesses failed to address competitiveness and

readiness to their environment. Instead, they find it more difficult during the current

situation. This is the business, according to Aaash Pahwa (2021), which either

occupation or trade that involves providing goods or services activities in exchange for

generating profits. Its objective is to make itself go on and conduct its activities in a

long run amidst the situations. It is the main reason why do businesses exist. A

successful business must continue to strive for the best and prepares itself for the

situation like the pandemic. In a study done by Fraser Sherman (2020), it was found

that successful businesses should keep their doors open for the possibilities of

tomorrow. No matter what your definition of success is, you need to make a plan to

strengthen your foundation to overcome every dilemma like this.

This study is supported by the theory of Drucker (1940-1950) in the theory of

business where he stated that new major management was discovered before as they

keep on discovering things today. Every technique they developed is a powerful tool

for a business to keep itself standing. Yet, there are some things that they cannot do or

they should not know what to and how to deal with it. Most companies that have

enjoyed long-term success were suffering when calamities attack. A company may

only be a superstar yesterday but when difficulties were encountered, it finds itself

stagnating and frustrated in an unmanageable crisis. This phenomenon is by no means

confined to some countries. Businesses were built but when the time comes, they can

no longer run to fit the reality of possibilities. Businesses must develop their values,

The Disadvantage of the Coronavirus to the Businesses within the Philippines during the Pandemic
Holy Cross College 10

strengths, and weaknesses so that they can be prepared when calamities come without

even worrying about their sales. According to Siemens (1870) the first CEO of

Deutsche Bank, every organization must know the theory of business. A valid theory

that is focused, consistent, and extraordinarily powerful. If you want to achieve

industrial development, you must have the theory of business as your guide. Having a

complete theory is important because it will make you one of the multinational

business owners. In a study done by Mitsubishi (1870) which explains clearly the

theory of business, she explains that both successful companies have faced challenges.

What underlies the current situation of many businesses and large organizations must

a worked theory. If they want to keep on continuing their business growth, they must

face calamities stronger even if it may impact them.

CHAPTER II

METHODOLOGY

Research Design

The type of this qualitative research is phenomenology because it focused on

the study of the lived experiences of the people about the disadvantages of the

coronavirus to the businesses specially, in the Philippines.

Participants

The Disadvantage of the Coronavirus to the Businesses within the Philippines during the Pandemic
Holy Cross College 14

Participants are essential in conducting your research because they are the ones

from who you can get enough pieces of information. They were the human subject

with whom the researcher can collect data for the study to prove a thing and a point.

The researcher decided to use non-probability sampling particularly, Purposive or

Judgmental Sampling. It is applicable in selecting participants that are unhesitatingly

corresponding to the main objective of the study. They have rich experiences about

what is ask, and also, the study pertains clearly to them.

In this study, the main participants are ten (10) people who owned a business

in the Philippines, who were affected by the virus. Their businesses are either big or

small yet, continuously functioning.

Instrument

The researcher used survey questionnaires in this research study as their

instrument or guide in conducting the interview. The questions are extracted from the

"Statement of the Problem" of this study, and the Questionnaire is composed of five

(5) questions that are related to the specific and general problem. Its purpose is to get

insights that support the problem of the study to develop concrete solutions.

Data Collection

In collecting the data and information needed, the researcher gathered data

through an interview, particularly an unstructured interview, wherein the researcher

The Disadvantage of the Coronavirus to the Businesses within the Philippines during the Pandemic
15

used questionnaires as a guide in conducting it. The researcher let the participants

answer based on their emotions and own decisions about the questions.

The researcher decided to use non-probability sampling particularly, Purposive

or Judgmental Sampling. It is to get information from the participants or interviewees

about the disadvantages of coronavirus to the businesses. Specifically, enterprises in

the Philippines somehow affect the growth of the economy. It ought to fact-finding

enough information so that, the study will fall good into places. Collecting data is a

big help to support your study and proves the importance of what you are conducting.

Also, data collection makes the research study possible. It is by helping the researcher

to develop qualified conclusions about the main problem.

Data Analysis

The researcher analyzed the data collected because some of the questions were

open-ended. It means that the participants have given their opinion freely. They do not

need to choose within the choices because they only need to express their thoughts and

ideas. Through the information provided by the participants, the researcher was able to

observe their answers.

With that, their opinions can be easily compared and contrasted with the

answers of other respondents. The data given by the interviewees are much helpful in

conducting your research study. It measures its capacity and effectiveness to continue

with the process.

CHAPTER III

RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS

The data that the researchers are collected are as follows:

Do you think businesses are essential to our country for the economy to continue its

progress? Explain your answer.

Participant 1 Yes, because they provide foods, things and services that are

essential to their everyday lives.

Participant 2 Absolutely yes, because our country runs and grows through

these businesses.

Participant 3 Yes, businesses are essential to our country, because of the tax

The Disadvantage of the Coronavirus to the Businesses within the Philippines during the Pandemic
17

they are paying.

Participant 4 Yes, because the income tax can help the society to improve

the economic status of the country.

Participant 5 Yes, because businesses provide goods, services and jobs to

the people to help our country grow.

Participant 6 Yes, because without businesses, our economy will not have

its progress and we might go down.

Participant 7 Yes, because businesses are the ones who provide goods and

services for people to consume. Businesses are also the ones

who provide job opportunities for people who will be the ones

producing goods and services.

Participant 8 Yes, it might help on economic growth and it helps a lot of

Filipino workers.

Participant 9 Yes, because our country needs taxes coming from businesses

to sustain the needs of the country and its people.

Participant 10 Yes, because they are the main reason to survive whatever

calamities and crises the world or our country rather may face

Holy Cross College 18

because of the taxes.

The first table reveals that the majority of the respondents stated that

businesses are essential to the country. It is because they provide taxes for the

economy to grow. They also bring forth lots of jobs for the people who can produce

products within each business. It only shows that businesses are the main reason why

the economy has progressed.

As a business owner, how has the Coronavirus affected the growth and sales of your

business?

Participant 1 Lack of income of the business. People do not buy often

because of the quarantine.

Participant 2 My business has been affected because of the delay of

supplies and deliveries.

Participant 3 In our business, it is getting higher sometimes because people

died at the same time some people who died are covid

positive.

Participant 4 Because of lockdown, the supplies were cut off and the

19

demand decreased.

Participant 5 It greatly affects our business sales.

Participant 6 For me, due to the pandemic, our sales did not go down

maybe because our business is a meat shop and it is one of the

important needs of people.

Participant 7 We had to adjust financially and change in our business. We

had to follow safety protocols in order to still run our business

amidst the pandemic. We were low in sales and it didn’t

operate as well as before the pandemic.

Participant 8 It affects a lot especially the sales and the delivery.

Participant 9 Because of a series of lockdowns, the supplies were cut off

and the demand of my customers decreased.

Participant 10 Because of the pandemic, my business started to process

fewer sales because my customers are afraid to go outside.

Another thing is they lack money.

Observing the second table, it let out that coronavirus affects the business

growth of the participants. Since the pandemic attacked, they started to process fewer

Holy Cross College 20

sales and, most of them stated that it is because of their customers who lacked money.

People did not often purchase products and to add, the supplies were delayed because

of the quarantine. Business owners were left with no choice especially, those who

produced products that are less needed during the trying times. Nevertheless, 20% of

them answered that they have coped up with it since they provide products and

services that are essential to the current situation.

Why do you think it is necessary to evaluate your business at all times? Explain

your answer.

Participant 1 I need to evaluate my business at all times to know the

things that we could improve more about our services.

Participant 2 In this pandemic, you have to evaluate your business

every time in order for you to avoid bankruptcy.

Participant 3 To know what you are going to do and decide if what

you are going to sell, especially the needs of every

citizen.

Participant 4 Because you have to monitor if every week or every

month, you are gaining money or your business is

improving or not.

The Disadvantage of the Coronavirus to the Businesses within the Philippines during the Pandemic
21

Participant 5 To assure the growth of the business.

Participant 6 For you to control and handle the business properly. To

monitor everything that is going in and out of the store.

Participant 7 To know if there is a difference or progress every

year/month, so that we would know what kind of

adjustments or changes that we can do in order to gain

more profit or maintain the progress.

Participant 8 To check if it is in good condition.

Participant 9 I think it is necessary to evaluate the business to know

what to do when some changes happen to avoid any

bankruptcy or any bad things that might affect the

growth of the business.

Participant 10 Evaluating your business is like alerting yourself and

your business to keep on working amidst the pandemic

and any other catastrophes.

Table 3 discloses that it is necessary to evaluate your business at all times to

avoid bankruptcy. The researcher's participants added that it is also the right thing to

The Disadvantage of the Coronavirus to the Businesses within the Philippines during the Pandemic
Holy Cross College 22

do to identify the things that must be done to improve businesses especially, during the

current situation. Evaluating your business is like alerting yourself to the possibilities

that may come to assure its growth.

How did you deal with the adjustments and the fewer sales within your

business specified that customers and consumers lacked the money to support their

needs?

Participant 1 I decreased the price that we offer to the people. Because

we still need to have an income even though it is low

compared to the original price.

Participant 2 By making the price seller but not to the point that less

than the investment.

Participant 3 We give discounts especially to those who really have

nothing.

Participant 4 I will not increase the prices of my products just because

they decreased, I will still give the same price so that

they can still afford them.

Participant 5 There must be no overpricing.

The Disadvantage of the Coronavirus to the Businesses within the Philippines during the Pandemic
23

Participant 6 Sometimes, the customers do not have the money to buy

what he/ she needs, that is why in our business, we give

people the lowest price that we can give them, because

as a businesswoman, we also need to know what our

customers’ needs.

Participant 7 It was stressful enough to the point that we even thought

of closing our business. We adjusted the amount on how

much people can give without giving them any

struggles, but at the same time, we still earned profit. We

just had to adjust on our personal expenses.

Participant 8 We used online platforms to make some sales.

Participant 9 I ended up waiting and building another business that

might click to my customers. Because I cannot just stick

with one plan but, I need more to survive.

Participant 10 Making adjustments has never been easy. I decided to

serve my customers by delivering their orders for free.

Also, I decided to make another strategy that they will

surely like which are freebies and lessening the prices of

my products.

The Disadvantage of the Coronavirus to the Businesses within the Philippines during the Pandemic
Holy Cross College 24

The fourth table reveals that most of the respondents stated that dealing with

the adjustments is never easy. Because there were only fewer sales within their

businesses, they decided to decrease their products' prices. They also give discounts

and adjust their expenses to cope up with the situation. Since their customers have no

job, they avoid overpricing and use online platforms to advertise their products.

Having an advanced mind is an advantage because they even tried another plan for

their business to click. Instead of sticking with one plan, they became creative just so

they can relate with their customers and consumers.

What do you think are the possible ways to overcome business bankruptcy

during the pandemic? Explain your answer.

Participant 1 Change your way and advertise your business. Be more

engaged on social media platforms since people spend

their time online.

Participant 2 Do your business via online and avoid overpricing.

Participant 3 Try other business that is common during the pandemic

like online selling.

Participant 4 You need to be knowledgeable about the strategies about

marketing and you have to know what is needed.

The Disadvantage of the Coronavirus to the Businesses within the Philippines during the Pandemic
25

Participant 5 Goods must be of great needs of consumers.

Participant 6 Always be hands-on and monitor everything. Be wise in

building your business because not everything is on

trend. Instead, build a business that you love and you

really want.

Participant 7 Create a clear and effective plan that includes focusing

on quality of goods and services. Avoid the frequency of

lending and borrowing money and lastly, give

consideration to the people.

Participant 8 Use social media and sell the needs of the people right

now.

Participant 9 You need to have enough knowledge about what is

happening to your surroundings. You need to be flexible

to embrace the changes and I guess, you need effective

strategies.

Participant 10 Keep going and pray for His guidance. Second, apply

effective strategies that might help the business and

lastly, be knowledgeable enough about the ups and

The Disadvantage of the Coronavirus to the Businesses within the Philippines during the Pandemic
Holy Cross College 26

downs of the business.

Business bankruptcy is the vulnerability of every business. In the fifth table,

the researcher asked the respondents about the possible ways to avoid business

bankruptcy. The majority of the participants stated that they must use online platforms

and avoid overpricing because people want affordable products. You need to have

enough knowledge about the business you are interested in and, if it did not click, then

try another plan or enterprise. They also said that if you want your business to be

successful, you need to be hands-on about it. Keep your courage bolder to monitor the

things that are happening to your surroundings.

CHAPTER IV

CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Conclusions

Businesses and business owners are experiencing difficulties brought about by

the pandemic. It is already visible since people lost their jobs in exchange for their

safety and survival. It is a big challenge that is being faced by everyone in this state.

In conclusion, the researcher gets to know that businesses are the ones who

suffer a lot. They have lost several opportunities that classify as one of the

disadvantages of the coronavirus. The sales became low knowing the fact that

customers lost their ability to provide for their needs. The pandemic affects the growth

of every business. As a result, the country started to get weak because the taxes are not

enough to sustain the needs of the economy. Through the data collected, the researcher

also concluded that entrepreneurs tried to think of another way to keep their businesses

running. Although they were not used to the changes and adjustments, they still tried

their best to evaluate their enterprise. Business owners thought of strategies to turn the

disadvantages into advantages ones. In that way, they can cope up with their expenses

and can produce some sales. On the other side, these disadvantages had taught the

entrepreneurs to embrace the changes that may come. They learned to alert themselves

and observe the process of their business all the time. They ended up with helpful

strategies to attract customers and consumers to improve what they have before.

The Disadvantage of the Coronavirus to the Businesses within the Philippines during the Pandemic
Holy Cross College 28

Recommendations

The researcher figured out recommendations that enterprises may use.

Businesses must stand still against any catastrophes by evaluating their progress. With

it, entrepreneurs can prepare their SWOT analysis so that their vulnerability will

become their strengths. Applying effective strategies is also helpful because it will

attract customers and consumers. You can be innovative at all times if you want to get

more sales. Even amid difficult obstacles, you can also use social media platforms as

an advantage to gain many customers over your competitors. Do not make it too

complicated to avoid any bankruptcy. Be bolder, wiser and courageous. Always take a

step ahead to reach success.
