Introduction of the Topic

THE PERIMETER OF ANY PLANE FIGURE

Target Skill Finding the Perimeter of Regular and Irregular Plane Figure

As part of the “Gulayan sa Paaralan Project”

implemented by the Department of Education,
the San Jose Elementary School faculties
decided to convert their vacant lot into a
vegetable garden. How much fencing materials
will they buy given the measurement of the
vacant lot at the right?

To find the distance around the lot, we need to

add the lengths of the sides of the garden. The
distance around the garden is called polygon. The total distance around the polygon is called a
perimeter.
To determine the perimeter, find the sum of the lengths of the side.
We have:

Perimeter = s + s + s + s
Perimeter = 13 m + 15 m + 8 m + 8 m = 44 m

Thus, the San Jose Elementary School faculties need to buy 44 meters of fencing materials. How
can we identify the irregular and regular plane figure? The example above (trapezoid) is considered
as irregular plane figure or irregular polygon.

MATH 4 QUARTER 3 WEEK 7 P a g e 2|8

Explore and Discover

Can you think of other ways to find the perimeter? Look at the figures below.
A. Notice that all their sides are equal. Thus, these figures are considered as regular polygons.

The perimeter of a regular polygon (a polygon with all sides are equal) can be found by
using the formula below.
Perimeter = number of sides × length of one side
P = n × s
P=n×s

5m
1) 2)
2 cm 2 cm 5m 5m
Solution: Solution:
P=n×s 5m P=n×s
2 cm
P=3×s P=4×s
3 equal sides =3×2 4 equal sides =4×5
(triangles) P = 6 cm (square) P = 20 m

B. Some polygons, like a rectangle and parallelogram have two equal opposite sides. Their perimeter
can be found by adding 2 times the length and 2 times the width, or its perimeter equals twice the
sum of length and width.

Perimeter = number of equal opposite sides × (length + width)

P = 2 ×( l + w )
P = 2 × (l + w)

10 cm 9 cm
3) Solution: 4) Solution:
5 cm P = 2 × (l + w) 6 cm P = 2 × (l + w)
P = 2 x (5+10) P = 2 x (9+6)
= 2 x 15 = 2 x 15
2 equal opposite sides 2 equal opposite sides
(rectangle) P = 30 cm (parallelogram) P = 30 in

Activity 2 Ruler My Perimeter

Objective: Measure the perimeter of any given figure using appropriate tools.
Direction: Read the selection below then solve the problem.
Dr. Dela Cruz, a principal of San Jose Elementary School, would like to build a fishpond beside
his office. Give the measurement of each side by using a ruler. Use the centimetre unit to measure
the sides of the fishpond. After measuring the sides, replace the centimetre unit into meter.
Ask:
1. What is asked in the problem?
2. What is the length of the fishpond?
3. What is the width of the fishpond? (____ m)
4. What operation will you use?
5. How is the solution done?
6. What is the total length of the side of (____ m)
the fishpond?

Good job! You are now ready to find the perimeter everything around you. For you to enjoy more
and master how to find the perimeter of any plane figure, you may explore inside your room.
Hope you enjoyed answering those activities.

Remember

➢ The examples of plane figure are triangle, square, rectangle, parallelogram, and trapezoid.
➢ Any plane figures are also called polygons.
➢ A polygon is a simple closed figure made up of line segments that meet but do not cross.
➢ There are two types of polygon, regular polygon (a polygon with all sides are equal) and
irregular polygon (a polygon with either two equal opposite sides or unequal sides).
➢ The examples of regular polygon are equilateral triangle and square.
➢ The examples of irregular polygon are rectangle and trapezoid.
➢ Parallelogram can be considered either regular or irregular polygon.
➢ Perimeter is the distance around a polygon.
➢ To find the perimeter of an irregular polygon, add the measures of the sides.
➢ Perimeter is expressed in the same units of measure as in length and width. To find the perimeter
of a regular polygon, just find the product of the number of sides and the measure of one side.
