stark quality. This becomes most apparent in relation

routines. Without relying on artificial light, architecture in
the region has to make use of the sun as a light source within
buildings, while also protecting those living in them from
its intensity. This has resulted in vernacular architecture with
very few or small openings, which renders the inside of a
building nearly pitch black while the outside is illuminated
by direct sunshine that beats down mercilessly. One is
either blinded by light or can hardly see in the dark. When
moving from one into the other, an adjustment of the eyes
is always needed, making the relationship with light a
particular one. One that requires patience and an accept­
ance that power lies not with a light switch, but with the
source of the light itself.
Intrigued by this interplay of nature and the built environment, photographer Iwan Baan and architect Francis Kéré set
out to capture how the natural cycle of light provided by the
sun shapes vernacular architecture in Burkina Faso.
Baan has long been drawn to capturing traditional ways of building across the African continent. Of particular interest to
him are buildings and places of worship hewn from natural
material, which seem to spring from the landscape as
if an extension of it, rather than being erected like a foreign
entity at odds with its location. Mud used for walls is
harvested from the ground nearby, rooms and space are
carved directly into rocky landscapes, and roofs are
renewed with the seasons. It is architecture that works with
nature, not against it. And it is fast disappearing.
The invitation to create the 30th Annual Report for the Zumtobel Group presented an opportune moment to document
a particular aspect of this architecture – how its relationship
with natural light is integral to its design, in the absence
of an artificial source of it. In photographing people whose
daily routines are tightly wound with the light sources
available to them and the buildings they have constructed
in response to this rhythm, a particular relationship and
appreciation of light is made apparent.
Aware that a meaningful documentation of the momentum of light in West Africa could only be achieved in collaboration
with the keen eye of someone who had grown up with it,
Baan teamed up with Kéré to travel together to three exem­
plary locations in Burkina Faso featuring some of the most
striking and also most mundane examples of architecture
shaped by natural light conditions: the Grand Mosque
of Bobo-Dioulasso, the intricately painted houses of Tiébélé
and the communal compounds in Pouni and Gando.
The stark contrast in light intensity made the endeavour challenging. The glistening sunlight outside during the day com­
pared with the all-encompassing darkness once night falls
makes it especially difficult to photograph these settings.
However, new extremely light-sensitive cameras and a way
of printing that emphasises the subtleties of light conditions
can now showcase the patina of objects and surfaces in
near dark spaces. Images of the exterior and daylight con­di­
tions are printed on white pages and the dark interiors, and
night-time images are printed with a specially developed
printing process involving silver, white and CMY ink layered
on to black paper.
The result is a thoughtful homage to a practice of building and an understanding of natural conditions that is being lost.
It is a celebration of the ultimate source of light and a
reminder to take note of it and not forget about it when
flicking a light switch.
MEMORIES, Francis Kéré My formative memories are anchored in light. Growing up in Burkina Faso, once the sun had set my maternal grand­
mother would gather the young ones of the family around

We all wanted to be in the first row around the glow so we
could be as close as possible to every word that left her lips,
which we watched move in the flickering crackle of the
lamp. Sur­rounding us was a blanket of pitch black. Her voice
and the circle of light. That’s all there was. It held us in and
kept us close.
When elders passed in our village, the community would gather in a courtyard lit by a much larger lamp, which illuminated
those dancing in it and elongated their shadows until they
merged with the spectators looking on from the darkness
beyond the light. These beautiful moving patterns decorated
the festivities held for the souls just departed.
Light piercing through the night like this was a rare occurrence. It is for this reason these memories are so vivid, because
a source of light other than the sun was an event, something
to take note of.
Light was never simply something that illuminated a space. It was a creator of shapes and patterns. One such living
sculpture was the rain of light that fell through the thatched
roof covering the house where I slept. I would fall asleep
in the complete darkness only to wake, slowly open my eyes
and see drops of sun coming through the straw cladding
and dancing across the surfaces it hit. Then I would turn
my head and see a line of light come through the curved
opening of the door and creating a sculptural element
slic­ing through the otherwise dark room. As the day went
on this form would move across the floor and morph if
a person moved through it. Endlessly fascinating, growing
faint with clouds or rain, but always in motion.
For us, light choreographed life. The sun and its position in the sky determined our movements. We followed its cycle
across the sky. Relying solely on natural sources of light
shaped our daily routines. How people move through their
day and when they do what, is to a large extent influenced
by light. Something that is easily forgotten when it can be
had simply by pressing a light switch.
Where I grew up, the light environment is marked equally by scarcity and abundance, so our relationship with the sun
is somewhat paradoxical. During my childhood, I watched
as people shied away from the light and heat when the sun
was high in the sky, only to band together around the glow
of a fire or petroleum lamp once it set. Too much light means
unbearable heat. Yet its absence would mean cave-like
housing without the ability to see inside them at all.
Apparent contradictions are often sources of great creativity, and I continue to be amazed by and learn from the intricacy
of the architecture of my childhood, which does not rely
on artificial light. In sub-Saharan Africa, the challenge is
us­ing sunlight to illuminate the interior of a building while
also protecting it from the sun’s intensity. In most ver­nac­ular
structures the solution is little openings that diffuse
rays into the places where light is most needed. Usually that
means two corners: the kitchen and the storage area.
These are never large skylights. They are small apertures that allow just enough illumination for the eye to adjust and
make out shapes as a person steps inside from the extreme
brightness of the exterior. The result is stark contrasts.
It also has structural reasons. The openings have no glass,
they are openings in the truest sense of the word. When
sun gives way to rain, they have to be covered so the
house isn’t flooded, and the smaller they are the easier
that is done.
Sun during the day and petroleum lamps fuelled with cotton and shea butter as well as outdoor fires at night were the
sources of light growing up in Burkina Faso. Lamps
were a kind of luxury. But one we also feared, as you could
get burned easily. People had to learn how to operate
them, and pump them until they started glowing. That is how
we pushed back the night.
This changed when the first torches and battery-powered camping lights arrived. Mostly these were owned by men who
had gone to Ivory Coast as migrant workers and were able
to afford such luxuries when they returned to Gando. Bigger
lights were bought to illuminate whole compounds, while
torches allowed you to move through the dark and shine
them where you most needed them. One of my most distinct
memories is how the colour of the torch’s beam changed
when the battery grew weak. They would turn an orangey-
red, warning you that the minutes were counted, reminding
you how precious light is.
Then came portable electrical light sources that started replacing the more dangerous fires and petroleum lamps. These
cast a much wider, stronger pool of light as multiple bulbs
could be powered up and give off more light than anything
that relied on batteries.
To this day artificial light is a rare and often unpredictable resource in Burkina Faso. Even in the urban context of capital
cities such as Ouagadougou, where high-speed internet
has arrived and mobile phones are ubiquitous, the electrical
grid is not steady enough to ensure all homes have reliable
light sources. Instead, phones simply double as torches
and the street lamps function as communal fireplaces.
What both the day and night sources of light have in common is that they result in pools around which people gather – of
light in the night, and shade during the intense heat of the
day. At night, whatever the source of a cone of light, you will
often find it shared by people. Two or three students reading
together, a few children lying on their stomachs sticking
their heads together while one holds a torch above them to
offer each a little corner of light, or adults gathering around
some flames to prepare dinner or to just be together.
During the day, people will congregate in the cool shade
provided by trees or buildings.
This social comfort and the stark design elements are why I continue to be fascinated with light. Whenever possible
I sculpt and paint with it. The use of glass, glass and more
glass to let in the maximum of light is not one that entices
me. It’s like having an inescapable spotlight trained on
you, or inviting the outside world to look into the last corner
of your space. I want to filter light, to let it create patterns.
I want to explore how transparency can be provided without
losing privacy. Light should encompass you, not knock
you out with brightness. The quality of light lies in the inter­
play of dark and bright. Having only one or the other means
losing some of the intricate beauty their communion can
provide, making space and the experience within as rich as
can be. Never yield the power of light solely to a switch.

The intricately decorated houses of Tiébélé

follow an architectural tradition that centres on protection. The door frames are low and
there are hardly any windows, making it tricky for intruders to enter. This means the interiors
of these adobe houses are dark with very little natural light to illuminate the living space.
The few openings that do exist are located to direct sunlight where it is most needed. Some
of the houses have a short flight of steps leading on to the flat or slightly inclined roof, the
latter avoiding the pooling of rainwater. The spacing between rooms, roofs and courtyards
is designed in a way that maximises thermal comfort thanks to the natural ventilation
system this provides.
What sets these traditional clay buildings
apart are the geometric designs that the women apply to the exterior walls. Depending
on social status, a pattern is drawn with a naturally produced paint using hands and small
tools. A natural varnish then offers some protection to the finished work, although exposure
to the weather calls for regular touch-ups. The painting of the walls is a social event and
an example of architecture shaped by a way of life and traditional forms of gathering.
The buildings themselves are clustered
together to make one organic structure with walls connecting the various homes. This reflects
a way of living together that dates back to the 15th century when the Kassena people,
who are the architects and builders of this style of housing, first settled in the region, which
stretches across Burkina Faso’s southern Nahouri Province into northern Ghana.

Bobo-Dioulasso is Burkina Faso’s second-

largest city with close to one million inhabitants. The Grand Mosque stands in the historic
district of the city and speaks to its storied past. Built on the site of a once sacred forest, it
is one of the best-preserved examples of Sudano-Sahelian architecture. Varying accounts
put its construction sometime between the mid- and late 19th century. The mosque is
built from laterite, clay and wooden poles, which support a roof terrace. As is characteristic
of this architecture, wooden beams protrude from the walls and act as inbuilt scaffolding.
This allows for the regular repair work that is integral to mud-brick buildings as exposure to
harsh weather conditions damages the material.
The interior of the mosque has very
few openings for light, resulting in cool and dusky prayer areas. This closed-off architecture
combined with the natural building materials creates comfortable thermal conditions.
It is possible to reach the roof of the mosque via spiral staircases, which are made from the
same natural material as the building itself. To do so visitors pass from the bright sunlight
of the streets into the dark interior, wait for their eyes to adjust, and then make their way past
the thick clay pillars that provide the mosque’s structural support. From there, they climb
back into direct sunlight via tightly wound steps on to a flat roof. This offers a magnificent view
of the city, which has spread outward from this imposing landmark and so offers a vantage
point from past to present.

Separated by approximately 300 kms,

the town of Pouni west of the capital Ouagadougou and the village of Gando east of it have
their architecture organised in a similar way. Extended families of up to 100 people, and
spanning four generations, live in compounds that are clustered across the landscape and
separated by fields for subsistence agriculture. This follows the pre-colonial settlement
tradition in Burkina Faso.
To this day the principle remains that a
cluster of both round and rectangular one-storey buildings are connected via their walls and
together create an intricate assortment of spaces for cooking, sleeping and storing goods.
A number of these compounds then form larger interconnected webs that start to form
villages and towns. Pouni’s buildings have flat roofs that inhabitants can utilise, while thatched
straw roofs top the round huts in Gando. In both cases the traditional building material is
a mixture of mud and cow dung, which needs regular maintenance due to erosion. Interior
light sources are limited. Often it is only the entrance space that is illuminated by daylight
coming through the door, with an occasional small opening on the side strategically placed
to provide the cooking area with a bit of light.
How the architecture expands is linked to the
needs of the community. Pouni has been settled for longer than Gando and so has already
reached town size. When more space or a new compound is needed, it is the community that
both voices that need and then fulfils it in a collective building effort.

Dear shareholders, business partners and customers,
It gives me great pleasure to present to you the latest
unique creation in our series of artistic Annual Reports. This
is a very special edition for us, too, as we look back over
30 years of this tradition at our company. Ever since 1991,
the Zumtobel Group has invited internationally renowned
figures from the worlds of architecture, graphic design
and art to engage with the theme of light. The underlying
idea – then as now – is to showcase our close links with
art and culture and in the process to generate a design
language that extends beyond the specific corporate
design guidelines of the Zumtobel Group and its individual
brands. Our Annual Reports reflect this aim in a way that
transforms and challenges conventional approaches.
A deep-rooted tradition – in architecture and
in the daily lives of the people of Burkina Faso, shaped
by that ultimate and original light source, the sun – is also
embodied in the photographic masterpiece created by
Iwan Baan for the 30th edition of our artistic Annual Report.
Produced in a cross-disciplinary collaboration with the
architect Francis Kéré, who grew up surrounded by such
lighting conditions, this remarkable collection offers a
stunning documentation of the role of natural light in Africa’s
traditional architecture. Light as the focus of people’s lives;
people’s lives in focus in this light – this close rapport
naturally also brings to mind the lighting solutions offered
by the Zumtobel Group, where the focus is invariably on
people and their needs.
I would also like to take this opportunity to
sum up the key developments of the past financial year. For
the Zumtobel Group, like so many others, the 2020/2021
financial year was deeply marked by the impacts of
the Coronavirus pandemic, which caused the steepest
decline in global GDP in decades. For us it was, none­the­
less, a successful year: we were able to respond to this
exceptional situation rapidly and consistently and, despite
lower revenues, to close our books on the financial year
with significant increases in net profit and free cash flow.
In this challenging time, our global team of more than
5,800 employees played an especially crucial part in our
success. 2020 was a landmark year in other ways,
too, as we celebrated the 70th anniversary of our core
Zumtobel brand.
We used the crisis to ensure that we are even
better prepared for the future. One key focus here was on
sharpening our brand strategy: systematically positioning
the Zumtobel and Thorn brands by streamlining their
respective product portfolios and configuring their brand
organisations for greater efficiency. On the vital issue of
sustainability, during the past financial year we deepened
our focus on our existing initiatives. One of the major
goals we have set ourselves is to achieve climate neutrality
by 2025: in everything we do we are working towards a
circular economy, a concept we will be factoring in at the
earliest phase of product development, before extending
it through our manufacturing operations and along
our supply chain. Our aim is to make our luminaires largely
recyclable and achieve an entirely eco-friendly product.
We can and fully intend to play a pioneering role for the
whole lighting sector in this respect.

ich freue mich sehr, dass Sie in diesem Moment ein wei­-

berichte in den Händen halten. Es ist zudem für uns eine
ganz besondere Ausgabe – so blicken wir auf das 30-jährige
Bestehen dieser Tradition unseres Hauses zurück. Seit
1991 lädt die Zumtobel Group international renommierte
Persönlichkeiten aus den Bereichen Architektur, Grafik­
design und Kunst ein, sich mit dem Thema Licht auseinan-
derzusetzen. Damals wie heute ist der Grundgedanke,
unsere enge Verbindung zu Kunst und Kultur darzustellen
und dabei eine Gestaltungssprache jenseits der Corporate
Design-Richtlinien der Zumtobel Group und ihrer einzelnen
Marken zu schaffen. Die Geschäftsberichte spiegeln dies
auf unkonventionelle Weise wider.
Eine tiefe Tradition – in Architektur und im täg­
lichen Leben der Menschen in Burkina Faso, das von der
Sonne als ursprünglichste Lichtquelle geprägt ist – ver­
körpert auch das fotografische Meisterwerk von Iwan Baan,
entstanden für die 30. Edition unseres Gestalterischen
Geschäftsberichts, in interdisziplinärer Zusammenarbeit
mit dem in dieser Lichtumgebung aufgewachsenen
Architekten Francis Kéré. Auf eindrucksvolle Weise wird
die Rolle des natürlichen Lichts in der volkstümlichen Archi-
tektur Afrikas dokumentiert. Licht – als Mittelpunkt für
den Menschen. Der Mensch – als Mittelpunkt im Licht, was
mich eine gedankliche Brücke zu unseren Lichtlösungen
innerhalb der Zumtobel Group schlagen lässt: Im Fokus
steht immer der Mensch und seine Bedürfnisse.
Mit dieser Gelegenheit möchte ich Ihnen auch
über die wesentlichen Ereignisse des abgelaufenen
Geschäftsjahres berichten. Auch für die Zumtobel Group
war das Geschäftsjahr 2020/2021 stark geprägt von den
Auswirkungen der Coronapandemie, welche den stärksten
Rückgang des globalen Bruttoinlandsprodukts in den
letzten Jahrzehnten ausgelöst hat. Dennoch, es war
ein erfolgreiches Jahr für uns, in dem es uns gelungen ist,
schnell und konsequent auf die Ausnahmesituation zu
reagieren und trotz eines Umsatzrückgangs das Geschäfts-
jahr mit einem deutlich gestiegenen Jahresergebnis und
Free Cashflow abzuschließen. In dieser herausfordernden
Zeit haben gerade unsere über 5.800 Mitarbeiterinnen
und Mitarbeiter weltweit einen großen Beitrag zu diesem
Erfolg geleistet. 2020 war für uns aber auch ein besonderes
Jahr, in dem wir das 70-jährige Jubiläum unserer Kern-
marke Zumtobel feiern konnten.
Die Krise haben wir genutzt, um uns noch besser
für die Zukunft zu rüsten. Ein wichtiges Augenmerk lag
dabei auf der geschärften Markenstrategie im Sinne einer
systematischen Positionierung der beiden Marken Zumtobel
und Thorn durch die Straffung der Produktportfolien und
eine effizientere Aufstellung der Markenorganisationen.
Beim wichtigen Thema Nachhaltigkeit haben wir im abge-
laufenen Geschäftsjahr unsere bestehenden Initiativen
weiter in den Mittelpunkt gerückt. Eines unserer definierten
Hauptziele ist das Erreichen der Klimaneutralität bis 2025.
Wir arbeiten konsequent im Sinne der Kreislaufwirtschaft
und werden dies zukünftig in der frühesten Phase der
Produktentwicklung berücksichtigen – unsere Leuchten
sollen großteils wiederverwertbar sein – und weiter auch

Needless to say, the ongoing Coronavirus crisis
means that a high level of uncertainty persists around future
global economic trends. For manufacturing companies
like ourselves – but also for many other market players –
the situation in the raw materials market is challenging.
None­theless we are confident about the Zumtobel Group’s
growth prospects going forward. The improvement in
our cost position achieved in recent years, along with the
investments in innovative products and lighting solutions
that we have continued to make, especially during the crisis,
are set to have a clearer impact on our financial results
in the future.
Our prime motivator is the desire to offer future-
oriented lighting solutions that are increasingly energy-
and resource-efficient while providing people with the best
possible quality of light. We aim to create well-being and
improve people’s quality of life through light, while always
taking our environment into account – as a group and
through all our individual brands: acdc, Thorn, Tridonic
and Zumtobel. In doing so we can rely on our dedicated
employees, who I would like to thank most sincerely on
behalf of the entire Management Board for their commit­
ment, loyalty and collaboration. We would also like to

your support as we work towards these goals, and for

der Coronakrise bleibt manche Unsicherheit im Hinblick
auf die Entwicklung der Weltwirtschaft bestehen. Für
produzierende Unternehmen wie wir es sind – aber auch
für viele andere Marktteilnehmer – zeigt sich die Situation
auf dem Rohstoffmarkt herausfordernd. Dennoch blicken
wir mit Zuversicht auf die weitere Entwicklung der Zumtobel
Group. Die über die letzten Jahre erzielte Verbesserung
unserer Kostenposition, gepaart mit den gerade auch in der
Krise getätigten Investitionen in innovative Produkte und
Lichtlösungen, wird sich künftig auch wieder deutlicher in
unserem Zahlenwerk ausdrücken.
Unsere höchste Motivation ist es, zukunfts­
orientierte Lichtlösungen anzubieten, die immer weniger
Energie- und Ressourcen verbrauchen, und gleichzeitig
die bestmögliche Lichtqualität für den Menschen erzielen.
Wir wollen mit Licht Wohlbefinden schaffen und die
Lebensqualität der Menschen durch Licht verbessern, in
stetiger Rücksichtnahme auf unsere Umwelt – als Gruppe

Introduction
You have before you the Zumtobel Group’s 30th Annual
Report. I am delighted that precisely this report should
be the first that I have been privileged to steward as chair
of the Supervisory Board. It radiates something uniquely
associated with Zumtobel and its history – something that
moves and fascinates me personally. Here, architecture
and light meet in the utmost clarity and simplicity – founded
on a virtuoso command of material and form.
This is what Iwan Baan and Francis Kéré
exemplify, the masters of photography and archi­tec­ture
respectively who have created this Annual Report in a
collaboration spanning their two disciplines. I am thrilled
that we were able to secure their services for this project.
They represent some of the most potent and forward-
looking ideas and energies of our time.
Dutch photographer Iwan Baan is able to capture
special architectural moments in his pictures because
he thinks like an architect. This is precisely what makes him
one of the most renowned photographers worldwide,
as evidenced by his twenty or so fascinating photography
books on the interplay of architecture and nature. His
numerous awards include a Golden Lion from the Venice
Architecture Biennale.
As his collaborator on this Annual Report, Iwan
Baan selected the famous architect Francis Kéré, with
whom he has worked for many years. And for good reason.
“Radically simple” is the motto of Francis
Kéré, who was born in West Africa and whose works have
been displayed in institutions including the Museum
of Modern Art, becoming widely known through his
Serpentine Pavilion in London in 2017. When Kéré speaks
of simplicity, he means a masterful simplicity that calls
for immense knowledge, sensitivity and planning.
His idea is to create spaces that connect
seam­lessly with their environment. Wherever possible he
prefers to use local and natural materials and deploy
traditional craft techniques. His mode of building is energy-
saving, low-cost and sustainable. It turns the principle
of material-conscious building into reality in a brilliant and
simple way. And his buildings are beautiful.

In this Annual Report, Iwan Baan and Francis
Kéré appear in a unique collaboration. They understand
what they stand for. They are passionate about devel­
opments in the planning and building of spaces. And they
have an intuitive feeling for those moments in which light
has its effect on the viewer.
Light is our business; the business of Zumtobel’s
employees; the business of the family that founded
the company, now in its third generation. It has to do with
engineering, technology, energy efficiency, creativity and
innovation. And in all of this we have mostly been ahead
of the field – across the globe.
Light is the most important source of energy
on our planet. It’s as simple as that. Using light well can
be a matter of survival – a way of ensuring that something
continues to exist, and have meaning, from one day
to the next. It has a purpose. In recent times we have all
experienced just how important this is.

geschlagen vor Ihnen. Ich freue mich, dass es genau
dieser ist. Für mich ist es der erste, den ich als Aufsichts­
rats­vorsitzende begleiten darf. Er strahlt etwas aus, das
in besonderer Weise mit Zumtobel und seiner Geschichte
verbunden ist. Etwas, das mich ganz persönlich berührt
und fasziniert: Hier treffen sich Architektur und Licht
in äußerster Klarheit und Einfachheit. Basierend auf der
meisterhaften Beherrschung von Material und Form.
Dafür stehen Iwan Baan und Francis Kéré,
die beiden Meister der Fotografie und Architektur, die
diesen Geschäftsbericht disziplinübergreifend gestaltet
haben. Ich bin sehr froh, dass wir sie für diese Aufgabe
gewinnen konnten. Sie repräsentieren einige der zukunfts-
mächtigsten Ideen und Wirkkräfte dieser Zeit.
Der Niederländer Iwan Baan vermag in seinen
Bildern die besonderen Momente der Architektur einzu-
fangen, weil er selbst wie ein Architekt denkt – und gerade
deshalb zu den renommiertesten Fotografen weltweit
zählt. Dafür stehen seine beinahe zwanzig faszinierenden
Bildbänder über das Zusammenspiel von Architektur und
Natur. Er erhielt zahlreiche Auszeichnungen, unter anderem
den Goldenen Löwen bei der Architektur Biennale Venedig.
Iwan Baan hat als Dialogpartner für diesen
Geschäftsbericht den berühmten Architekten Francis Kéré
ausgewählt, den er viele Jahre begleitet hat. Das hat
seinen Grund.

der in Westafrika geboren ist und dessen Arbeiten unter
anderem im Museum of Modern Art präsentiert wurden,

günstig und nachhaltig. Sie verwirklicht in einleuchtender
Weise das Prinzip des materialbewussten Bauens. Und
seine Bauten sind schön.
Das spiegeln die Fotografien von Iwan Baan.
Iwan Baan und Francis Kéré sind in diesem
Geschäftsbericht in einzigartiger Zusammenschau zu
sehen. Sie verstehen, wofür sie stehen. Sie interessieren
sich für die Entwicklungen des Planens und Bauens von
Räumen. Sie haben ein Gespür für die Augenblicke, in denen
das Licht für den Betrachter seine Wirkung tut.

Wir haben gerade in diesen Tagen erlebt, wie wichtig das ist.
MOMENTS INTRODUCTION
This Annual Report forms part of a tradition –
and it also marks a change of generation, bringing
new ideas and new priorities. I’m committed to both of
these – to the tradition, and to the new ideas. In last year’s
Annual Report, Werner Sobek – one of the most renowned
represen­tatives of sustainable construction – took
centre stage. Sobek and Kéré have much in common.
We can learn from both of them.
Our world is facing the huge and diverse
challenges of a transformation unlike any we have ever
known – and certainly never experienced at the pace of
change we have been confronted with in recent months.
The Zumtobel Group has mastered these
challenges relatively well. Because we refocused on our
strengths. Perhaps these strengths have something
to do with what the architecture presented in this Annual
Report expresses: the art of concentration. The light
of a new generation. With an understanding of form and
materials. Clear, efficient, sustainable. And sustainability
also includes social responsibility – an issue especially
close to my heart. Sustainability means connectedness
and looking to the future.
I firmly believe that only by bringing business,
technology, people and nature together will we be able

Dieser Geschäftsbericht steht in einer Tradition.
Und er markiert einen Generationenwechsel, mit neuen
Ideen und neuen Prioritäten. Ich bekenne mich zu dieser
Tradition und zu den neuen Ideen. So kam in der vorigen
Ausgabe mit Werner Sobek einer der profiliertesten
Vertreter des nachhaltigen Bauens zu Wort. Sobek und
Kéré verbindet viel. Wir können von beiden lernen.
Unsere Welt steht vor gewaltigen, vielfachen
Herausforderungen einer Transformation, die wir so
noch nie erlebt haben. Schon gar nicht in der beschleu­
nigten Form, wie wir sie in den vergangenen Monaten
erfahren mussten.
Die Zumtobel Group hat sie vergleichsweise
gut gemeistert. Weil wir uns auf unsere Stärken besonnen
haben. Vielleicht haben diese Stärken etwas mit dem
zu tun, was die in diesem Geschäftsbericht gezeigte Archi-
tektur zum Ausdruck bringt: Das Können der Konzentra­
tion. Das Licht einer neuen Generation. Formbewusst
und materialbewusst. Klar, effizient, nachhaltig. Zur Nach-
haltigkeit gehört die soziale Verantwortung. Sie liegt mir
besonders am Herzen. Nachhaltigkeit bedeutet Zukunfts-
gewandtheit und Verbundenheit.
Ich glaube fest daran, dass nur ein Miteinander
von Wirtschaft, Technologie, Mensch und Natur uns hilft,
die Probleme dieser Zeit zu lösen. Nur dieses Miteinander
führt in die Zukunft. Denn alles Leben ist Problemlösen,
wie Karl R. Popper gesagt hat.
Ich danke unseren Kunden und Partnern,

Bringing light to life Outdoor architectural illumination is acdc’s speciality.
From historic buildings and bridges to protected struc­tures
and landmarks, acdc can offer first-class products,
know­ledge and service, transforming spaces practically,
cul­tur­ally and creatively.
Rising to the challenge
2020 was a challenging time for businesses and individ­
uals the world over. But acdc adapted. While staff turned
home living spaces into offices or were introduced
to new work­ing conditions, they continued to engage with
customers, sharing knowledge and building valuable
relationships.
Already offering a range of online webinars,
acdc were quick to turn their marketing digital, delivering
an increased number of online learning sessions in
those early months of the UK lockdown. By September, a
series of “LinkedIn Live” broadcasts began, with key industry
figures delivering presentations live to acdc’s net­work
of professional followers. This included lighting designers
Neil Knowles, Marcus Steffen, Chris Sutherland and
David Gilbey, Director of Conservation at the London
Wildlife Trust – Mathew Frith, and Historic England’s Senior
Build­ing Services Engineer – Geraldine O’Farrell. The
topics of discussion ranged from lighting and its impact
on the nat­ural environment to how to light pro­tected
buildings and monuments, cementing acdc as a thought-
leader, not just a manufacturer.
Simultaneously, Lighting Applications Director
Dan Hodgson delivered virtual RIBA-accredited
CPDs to architects across the UK. Pre-pandemic, Dan
presented these sessions face-to-face and despite CPDs
going “online”, this interaction continued, with multiple
leads emerging.
In autumn, the Explore the Night campaign
was launched. What a pandemic had created was a greater
appreciation for local areas. Residents were spend­ing
more time outside, and this extended to the hours of
dark­ness. Consequently, towns and councils were wanting
to invest in outdoor lighting. Not just for safety, but to
enhance cultural and urban environments, encour­aging
communities to explore their neighbour­hoods. The
cam­paign promoted case studies, products and infor­
mation relevant for this type of architectural and functional
outdoor lighting.
A façade campaign followed in spring, empha­
sising the ways that lighting can be used to create an
identity for a building before someone enters it. In addition
to a new downloadable guide, acdc’s Dan Hodgson teamed
up with lighting designer David Gilbey for a lively online
discussion about façades. With a combined 60+ years
in the industry, the pair reflected on their own experiences
and knowledge to talk about the responsibilities of façade
lighting and show examples of good and bad design.
As well as creating learning opportunities for
customers and colleagues, acdc worked on a multitude
of projects behind the scenes. In the past twelve months,
this has included bridges, heritage buildings, hotels, a
water tower, a lighthouse and monuments.

Die Herausforderung annehmen
2020 war ein für Menschen und Unternehmen weltweit
gleichermaßen schwieriges Jahr. Aber acdc hat sich darauf
eingestellt. Auch im Homeoffice oder unter veränderten
Arbeitsbedingungen waren unsere Mitarbeiter stets
für die Kunden da und teilten ihr Wissen, so dass wertvolle
Beziehungen entstehen konnten.
Online-Webinare gab es bei acdc schon länger.
Als dann aber der erste Lockdown in Großbritannien kam,
wurde unverzüglich das Marketing digitalisiert und das
Angebot an Online-Seminaren ausgebaut. Im September
begann eine Reihe von „LinkedIn Live“-Übertragungen, in
denen Live-Präsentationen von führenden Vertretern der
Branche für acdc-Follower ins Netz gestellt wurden. Zu
den großen Namen gehörten die Lichtplaner Neil Knowles,
Marcus Steffen, Chris Sutherland, David Gilbey sowie
Mathew Frith, Director of Conservation des London Wildlife
Trust und Geraldine O’Farrell, Senior Building Services
Engineer von Historic England, der staatlichen Denkmal-
pflegebehörde Englands. In hochkarätigen Diskussionen
wurde der Themenbogen von Beleuchtung und deren
Auswirkungen auf die Umwelt bis hin zur Beleuchtung ge-
schützter Gebäude und Denkmäler gespannt und die
Gespräche untermauerten den Status von acdc nicht nur
als Hersteller, sondern auch als Vordenker.
Gleichzeitig bot Lighting Applications Director
Dan Hodgson im Netz von der RIBA (Royal Institute of
British Architects) anerkannte Seminare für Architekten
in Großbritannien an. Vor der Pandemie hatten diese
Fortbildungen als Präsenzveranstaltungen stattgefunden,
aber auch als pandemiebedingt das Format gewechselt
werden musste, setzte sich der Austausch fort und führte
zu einigen neuen Kontakten.
Im Herbst ging die Initiative „Explore the Night“
an den Start. Die Pandemie hat es mit sich gebracht,
dass wir alle unsere unmittelbare Umgebung mehr schätzen
gelernt haben. Die Menschen verbrachten mehr Zeit im
Freien, auch nach Eintritt der Dunkelheit. Als Folge davon
investierten Städte und Gemeinden, um die Außenbeleuch-
tung zu optimieren. Dabei ging es nicht nur um Sicherheit,
sondern auch um eine Aufwertung des kulturellen und
urbanen Umfeldes und darum, Anreize für Bewohner zu
schaffen, ihre nähere Umgebung besser kennenzulernen.
Im Rahmen der Initiative wurden Fallstudien, Produkte und
Informationen für diese Art architektonischer und funk­
tionaler Außenbeleuchtung gefördert.
Im Frühjahr schloss sich eine Initiative mit Schwer­
punkt auf Gebäudefassaden an, um zu zeigen, wie Licht noch
vor Betreten eines Gebäudes auf den Besucher identitäts­
stiftend wirken kann. acdc präsentierte dazu einen ent­spre­
chen­den Leitfaden zum Downloaden, während Dan Hodgson
und Lichtplaner David Gilbey eine lebhafte Online-Diskussion
über Fassaden anstießen. Die beiden ausgewiesenen

Iron Bridge
Opened in 1781, the Iron Bridge in Shropshire, UK was
the first bridge in the world to be constructed from
iron. Its purpose was to link neighbouring towns in order
to trans­port resources needed for mining industries.
In the past, the bridge had been illuminated by
floodlights, but at over 40 years old, they were no longer
fit for purpose. A £ 3.6 million conservation project was
carried out by English Heritage in 2017/2018 to repair the
bridge’s cracked joints, and it was at that time that the local
council decided a new lighting scheme was necessary.
LPA Lighting Design’s Liz Peck and Bob
Bohannon worked tirelessly on a new scheme that was
completed in September 2020. Working closely with acdc,
the end result uses pole-mounted FUSION floodlights
to create a burning furnace effect. The project has since
gone on to win two prestigious awards: a [d]arc award
in the category “structures – low budget” and a Lux award
for “Outdoor Lighting Project of the Year”.
At the beginning of 2021, Liz Peck, the lighting
designer, sadly passed away – a dear friend of the acdc
family, she will be sorely missed by all who worked with her.
Towneley Hall
One of acdc’s proudest moments of 2020 was the
“switch on” of new lighting at Towneley Hall in Lancashire,
UK. Located not far from the manufacturing facility at
Barrowford, Towneley Hall is a 14th-century council-owned
historic property comprising a public art gallery, museum
and gardens.
Last lit in the 1970s, the aim of the project was
to establish the hall as a go-to destination and make it
more attractive for wedding and event guests. One of the
first installations to use the ONE technology platform, it was
a moment to celebrate. PLAZA R and PLAZA S spot­lights
can be controlled by Towneley’s curators, enabling them to
create dynamic schemes, or minimalise lighting pollution
and energy use by setting on and off times.
Completed just before the UK went into its first
lockdown, employees from the commercial and manu­
facturing side of the business attended the switch-on,
which was captured by photography students from a local
college in a collaboration with acdc.
City of Carlisle
Cumbria County Council were inspired to undertake a city-
wide lighting initiative in 2020, and acdc played a central
role in transforming the city of Carlisle.
Rich in history and located between two
UNESCO world heritage sites, it has a visitor economy
worth over £ 500 million, and the city hosts multiple art
and cultural events throughout the year. It was one such
event, “City of Lights”, which inspired the council to install
permanent architectural lighting at multiple properties
in the city centre. This includes the Carlisle Citadel, railway
station, Station Hotel and Griffin pub, which are lit using
a range of products including BLADE Si linear luminaires,
FUSION floodlights and PLAZA Si spotlights.
This collaboration in design, installation and
product supply has developed a strong relationship
between the Zumtobel Group and the city’s lighting team,
leading to other projects for the Group.

Experten, die zusammen über mehr als 60 Jahre Erfahrung
in der Branche verfügen, tauschten Erfahrungen aus,
sprachen darüber, was gute Fassadenbeleuchtung leisten
kann und präsentierten sowohl leuchtende als auch weniger
gelungene Beispiele für Fassadenbeleuchtung.
Neben den Lernangeboten für Kunden und Kolle-
gen arbeitete acdc auch hinter den Kulissen an einer Vielzahl
von Projekten. In den vergangenen zwölf Monaten waren
dies vor allem Brücken, denkmalgeschützte Gebäude, Hotels,
ein Wasserturm, ein Leuchtturm sowie mehrere Denkmäler.
Iron Bridge
Die 1781 in der englischen Grafschaft Shropshire eröffnete
Iron Bridge war die erste Eisenbrücke der Welt. Sie verband
benachbarte Städte miteinander, um den Transport von
Ressourcen für den Bergbau zu vereinfachen.
Ursprünglich beleuchteten Scheinwerfer die
Brücke, die allerdings nach 40 Jahren nicht mehr zweck­
mäßig waren. Nachdem English Heritage 2017 und 2018 ein
Projekt im Wert von 3,6 Mio. Britischen Pfund durchgeführt
hatte, um die rissigen Fugen der Brücke zu reparieren,
entschied die Stadtverwaltung, dass es Zeit für ein neues
Beleuchtungskonzept war.
Hier kam LPA Lighting Design ins Spiel. In uner-
müdlicher Arbeit entwickelten Liz Peck und Bob Bohannon
ein Lichtdesign, das sie bis September 2020 ver­wirklichen
konnten. In enger Zusammenarbeit mit acdc entstand
eine außergewöhnliche Optik, geprägt von FUSION Schein­
werfern, die auf maßgeschneiderten Holzsäulen montiert
sind und den Eindruck eines Brennofens erwecken. Das
Projekt hat inzwischen zwei begehrte Auszeichnungen
geholt: einen [d]arc-Preis in der Kategorie „Konstruktionen
– kostengünstige Lösungen“ und eine Lux-Auszeichnung
als „Außenbeleuchtungsprojekt des Jahres“.
Liz Peck, die Licht-Designerin, ist leider Anfang
2021 verstorben. Sie war eine hochgeschätzte Freundin
der acdc-Familie und alle, die mit ihr zusammengearbeitet
haben, werden sie schmerzlich vermissen.
Towneley Hall
Zu den stolzesten Momenten des Jahres 2020 gehörte
für acdc das feierliche Einschalten der neuen Fassaden­
beleuchtung der Towneley Hall in der englischen Graf-
schaft Lancashire, unweit des acdc-Werks in Barrowford.
Das denkmalgeschützte, in städtischem Besitz befindliche
Gebäude aus dem 14. Jahrhundert beherbergt eine
Kunst­galerie und ein Museum und ist umgeben von einer
eindrucksvollen Parklandschaft.
Seit den siebziger Jahren hatte das Gebäude ein
Schattendasein geführt. Die Verantwortlichen wollten es
aus dem Dornröschenschlaf erwecken und für unterschied-
lichste Festivitäten wie Hochzeiten und private Veranstal­
tungen wieder attraktiv machen. Die Fassade der Towneley
Hall wird nun unter Anwendung der ONE Technologie von
PLAZA R und PLAZA S Strahlern beleuchtet. Die Kuratoren
können das Licht ganz nach ihren Vorstellungen einstellen.
So lassen sich dynamische Farbeffekte ansteuern, die
Lichtverschmutzung verringern und der Energieverbrauch
durch Festlegung von Ein- und Ausschaltzeiten minimieren.
Das Projekt konnte kurz vor dem ersten Lock-
down in Großbritannien abgeschlossen werden. An der

St Mary’s Lighthouse
Located on an island off the coast of England, St Mary’s
is a decommissioned lighthouse that today operates as a
tourist attraction.
As far back as the 11th century, the island was
inhabited by monks who used lanterns to warn passing
ships of the dangerous rocky waters. The structure as
it is today was built in 1898 and used a paraffin-powered
rotating lens to do the same job. Electrified in 1977, the
illumination then came from a revolving sealed beam lamp.
In early 2021, acdc was approached to provide
luminaires for the exterior of the lighthouse. FUSION 24
floodlights were chosen for their colour effect, optics and
quick turnaround times for delivery and installation.
To improve is to change Both inside and outside the Zumtobel Group, acdc
has always been recognised as the small brand with big
ambitions. Over the past year, acdc has improved its
foun­da­tions, establishing itself with a world-class pro­duc­
tion facility in Spennymoor, enabling fully integrated
testing in Europe’s biggest lighting laboratory; thanks to
a large-scale digitalisation project with R & D, it is now fully
integrated into the Zumtobel Group. To accommodate
this growth, trans­for­mation must take place. With a strong,
British heritage, the acdc brand will, over the coming
months and years, be fully adopted by sister brand Thorn.
Founded in 1928, Thorn has the experience, support and
strength to make this transformation a success.

Produktion teil. Studenten einer nahegelegenen Fachschule
für Fotografie dokumentierten in Zusammenarbeit mit
acdc die Einweihung.
City of Carlisle
Die englische Grafschaft Cumbria beschloss 2020 eine
großangelegte Beleuchtungsinitiative in der gesamten
Stadt Carlisle und acdc spielte eine zentrale Rolle bei der
Verwandlung des Stadtbilds.
Die geschichtsträchtige Stadt ist ein beliebtes
Touristenziel, da sie zwischen zwei UNESCO-Welterbe­stätten
gelegen ist. Carlisle erwirtschaftet mit dem Tourismus
jährlich rund 500 Mio. Britische Pfund und lockt mit Kunst-
und Kulturveranstaltungen zahlreiche Besucher an. Eine
dieser Veranstaltungen war das „City of Lights“ Event,
für das der Stadtrat an einer Vielzahl von Orten Beleuch-
tungsinstallationen in Auftrag gab. So wurden die Zitadelle
von Carlisle, der Bahnhof, das Bahnhofshotel und das
Griffin Pub mit verschiedenen Lichtprodukten, darunter
BLADE Si-Linearleuchten, FUSION-Scheinwerfer und
PLAZA Si-Strahler, in Szene gesetzt.
Aus der guten Zusammenarbeit bei der Planung,
Installation und Lieferung der Produkte ist eine enge Ge-
schäftsbeziehung zwischen der Zumtobel Group und dem
Beleuchtungsteam der Stadt entstanden, die inzwischen zu
Folgeaufträgen für die Unternehmensgruppe geführt hat.
St Mary’s Lighthouse
Der vor der englischen Küste gelegene stillgelegte Leucht-
turm St. Mary’s ist heute ein beliebtes Ausflugsziel.
Bereits im 11. Jahrhundert hatten auf der Insel
Mönche gelebt und vorbeifahrende Schiffe mit Laternen
vor den gefährlichen felsigen Gewässern gewarnt. In seiner
jetzigen Form wurde der Turm 1898 erbaut und für den
Betrieb mit einer paraffinbetriebenen, rotierenden Linse
ausgestattet. Nach der Elektrifizierung im Jahr 1977 diente
ein Rundum-Dichtstrahler als Beleuchtung.
Anfang 2021 erhielt acdc von den zuständigen
Stellen den Auftrag zur Beleuchtung der Fassade des
Leuchtturms. Besonderen Wert legten die Entscheider auf
den Farbeffekt, die Optik, rasche Lieferung und Einbau und
so fiel die Entscheidung auf FUSION 24-Scheinwerfer.
Aufbruch in die Veränderung Sowohl in als auch außerhalb der Zumtobel Group gilt acdc
von jeher als kleine Marke mit großen Zielen. Im Verlauf
des letzten Jahres hat sich acdc noch breiter aufgestellt
und eine Benchmark-Produktionsstätte in Spennymoor
eröffnet. Damit sind nun voll integrierte Tests in Europas
größtem Lichtlabor möglich und durch ein großangelegtes
Digitalisierungsprojekt mit F & E ist das Unternehmen voll-
ständig in die Zumtobel Group integriert. Dieses Wachstum
verlangt nun nach Veränderungen. Die britische Traditions­
marke acdc wird im Verlauf der kommenden Monate und
Jahre vollständig in das Portfolio der Schwestermarke
Thorn übergehen. Die 1928 gegründete Marke Thorn ver-
fügt über die nötige Erfahrung, den erforderlichen Rück-
halt und die Stärke, um den Erfolg dieses Transformations­
prozesses sicherzustellen.

zugang ist Beta, eine flexible, zuverlässige und effiziente
Deckenleuchte für verschie­dene Arbeitsumgebungen, die
ein Höchstmaß an Flexibilität, beste Leistungsfähigkeit und
Benutzerfreundlichkeit bietet. Neu in unserem Portfolio für
die Außenbeleuchtung ist Carat, eine elegante Leuchte
für den urbanen Raum, die dank Variable Light Distribution-
Technologie eine individuelle Anpassung an jedes Projekt
erlaubt. Isaro bietet kompromisslose Leistung und

Having a positive impact
As part of Cumbria County Council’s street light
replace­ment and improvement programme, Thorn
manufactured new LED lanterns that use the
innovative NightTune technology. The Council believes
it will be the first local authority in the UK to use
a newly developed adaptive LED street lantern that
is Dark Sky-friendly.
Since May 2020, Thorn has also been a proud
member of the esteemed “Made in Britain” association,
which consists of a grow­ing community of members
who are key UK manu­facturers designing and supplying
products to the highest standards.
Improving life indoors In 2020, Thorn supplied both internal and external illu­mi­
nation for a £ 10 million project that has revolutionised
the facilities at the Samuel Ward Academy in Suffolk. The
luminaires were chosen to enhance the overall appear­ance
of the state-of-the-art facility and to create a flexible and
adaptable 21st-century learning environment for pupils,
whilst providing low maintenance and a fully energy-efficient
solution. Also in 2020, Thorn supplied a variety of energy-
efficient luminaires for MB Décor in Middlesbrough that
included the popular PopPack, which has been updated
and relaunched with the very latest LED technology to
provide an affordable, energy-saving luminaire. The popular
PopPack batten fittings have also been reinvented in a
black finish to keep ahead of the increase in popularity for
black luminaires. One of the first projects to take advantage
of the sleek appearance of the new black PopPack was
Arbeta in Manchester.
Illuminating life outdoors
Our GTLED Pro tunnel luminaire, with advanced LED
technology for corrosive and demanding environments,
was chosen for the Marieholm Tunnel in Sweden.
Varying optics are used throughout the tunnel to provide
perfect smoothness.
In Coed Melyn Park, Newport City Council
wanted to upgrade the area to encourage more people
to get active. The Thorn lighting upgrade for the path-
ways, which involved the use of Urba bollards in Warm
White 3000 K, has successfully delivered a solution that
is fully Dark Sky-compliant and resistant to vandalism,
whilst ensuring zero light trespass and maximum wildlife
pro­tec­tion.
In Italy, the Interporto di Nola required modern­
isation and improved efficiency of the outdoor lighting
systems. The decision in favour of Altis, Areaflood Pro and
CiviTEQ has resulted in energy savings and a reduction
in running costs.
In Lech Zürs in Austria a state-of-the-art
floodlight system was required for the Alpine World Cup.
The Thorn system, consisting of 225 Altis, provided the
best lighting for both the athletes on site and the viewers
in front of the TV.

Positive Ausstrahlung
Als in der englischen Grafschaft Cumbria eine Erneuerung
und Optimierung der Straßenbeleuchtung geplant war,
lieferte Thorn neue LED-Straßenleuchten mit innovativer
NightTune-Technologie. Dem Kreisrat zufolge wird die
Grafschaft damit die erste Region in UK mit einer neu ent-
wickelten, anpassungsfähigen LED-Straßenleuchte, die
Dark Sky-freundlich (den Nachthimmel schützend) ist, sein.
Seit Mai 2020 ist Thorn stolzes Mitglied des
angesehenen Verbands „Made in Britain“ – ein wachsender
Zusammenschluss bedeutender britischer Unternehmen,
die Produkte in höchster Qualität gestalten und herstellen.
Licht für den Innenraum 2020 lieferte Thorn sowohl die Innen- als auch die Außenbe-
leuchtung für die mit 10 Mio. Britischen Pfund veranschlagte
Neu­gestaltung der Samuel Ward Academy in Suffolk.
Bei der Auswahl der Beleuchtung ging es vor allem darum,
die Gesamtoptik der Schule mit modernster Ausstattung
zu unterstreichen, ein flexibles und adaptives Lern­umfeld
für die Schüler zu schaffen und dabei gleichzeitig Energie­
effizienz und geringe Wartungskosten zu gewährleisten.
Außerdem lieferte Thorn 2020 eine Reihe von energieeffi-
zienten Leuchten für MB Décor in Middlesbrough, darunter
auch die beliebte PopPack mit neuester LED-Technologie
als kostengünstige, energiesparende Lösung. Die verkaufs-
starke PopPack-Lichtleiste ist jetzt auch mit schwarzem
Finish erhältlich, um die erhöhte Nachfrage für schwarze
Leuchten erfüllen zu können. Unter den ersten Projekten,
bei denen die neue, schwarze PopPack zum Einsatz kam,
war der Co-Working Standort Arbeta in Manchester.
Beleuchtung von Außenbereichen
Unsere Tunnelleuchte GTLED Pro, mit modernster LED-
Technologie für korrosive und anspruchsvolle Umgebungen,
wurde für den Tunnel Marieholm in Schweden ausgewählt.
Im gesamten Tunnel werden unterschiedliche Optiken ver-
wendet, um eine perfekte Gleichmäßigkeit zu erreichen.
Der Stadtrat von Newport wollte den Coed Melyn
Park aufwerten, um Besucher zu motivieren, aktiv zu werden.
Die neue Beleuchtung auf Basis von Urba-Pollerleuchten
in warmweißen 3000 K ist eine vandalensichere Lösung,
die keinen Lichtaustritt nach oben zulässt, da­mit die dort
lebenden Tiere möglichst wenig gestört und das nächtliche
Ökosystem geschont werden.
Für die Logistikplattform Interporto di Nola in
Italien erhielt Thorn den Auftrag zur Lieferung eines moder-
nen und energieeffizienten Außenbeleuchtungssystems.

Education and experience matter
Education and shared experience are pivotal to building
trusted partnerships. In 2020/2021 Thorn worked hard
to share its 90 years of knowledge with as many partners
as possible. Dedicated online educational webinars
have spanned the complete application spectrum, sharing
valuable insights and the latest innovations with a global
audience. The pandemic has been a positive launchpad for
the development of Thorn’s digital education presence.
The new LET’S TALK LIGHT sessions in 2021
have seen the online education format adapt to new trends
and customer needs, delivering short, concise and in-
depth expert lectures on exacting topics, such as lighting
for improved educational environments.
Thorn also hosted the online event “Preserving
the Dark Sky” at our new Light Forum in Dornbirn, Austria
that explored key topics and considerations surrounding
lighting the outdoors at night. Keynote guest Kjetil
Thorsen, co-founder of the renowned architectural office
Snøhetta, discussed the Dark Sky and the interaction
between people, spaces, architecture and lighting. During
an interactive tour in a section of the Light Forum we
showcased our solutions for outdoor lighting, best practice
examples of how to avoid spill light and our contribution
to the preservation of Dark Skies.
THORNeco The THORNeco family of LED luminaires meets the global
demand for energy-efficient and cost-effective lighting
options. Specifically designed for the daily lighting demand
of wholesalers, electricians and installers, this series
enables convenient, one-to-one replacement of old, energy-
consuming lighting sources as well as new installations.
The continuous expansion of the product portfolio allows
the customer a wide range of usage for their needs in
and around the building. New family members have joined
this year, such as the plug&play system for gardens, along
with a new cable system which ensures quick and safe
installation. Also new to the THORNeco portfolio is the Vario
range, which enables the customer to choose between
different colour temperatures to suit various applications
and preferences. The steady stream of new products
and modification of existing ones documents the realization
of our promise: easy to install and maintain, THORNeco
products allow for flexible configuration and fast setup for
a broad range of applications.

sich als positive Ausgangsbasis für die Weiterentwicklung
der digitalen Fortbildungspräsenz von Thorn erwiesen.
2021 haben wir mit den LET’S TALK LIGHT
Sessions das Online-Schulungsformat an neue Trends und
Kundenbedürfnisse angepasst. Dabei liefern kurze, präg-
nante und vertiefende Expertenvorträge zu anspruchs­
vollen Themen, wie zum Beispiel Licht zur Verbesserung
des Lernumfelds, wertvolle Einblicke.
Thorn richtete auch die Online-Veranstaltung
„Den Nachthimmel bewahren“ in unserem neuen Licht­
forum in Dornbirn, Österreich aus. Keynote-Referent Kjetil
Thorsen, Mitbegründer des renommierten Architektur­büros
Snøhetta, sprach über den Nachthimmel und das Zusam-
menspiel von Mensch, Raum, Architektur und Licht. Bei einem
interaktiven Rundgang durch einen Teil des Licht­forums
stellten wir unsere Lösungen für die Außenbeleuchtung
sowie Best Practices zur Vermeidung von Lichtverschmut-
zung und unseren Beitrag zum Schutz der Nacht vor.

Zuwachs bekommen, beispielsweise das Plug&Play-System
für den Garten zusammen mit einem neuen Kabelsystem für

je nach Anwendung und Präferenz zwischen verschie­

sources combined with intelligent electronics and digital
lighting management can deliver more than just light.
The highly qualified experts in Tridonic’s development
centres are leveraging this potential day by day – looking
beyond the brand’s own business horizons and engaging
in dialogue with customers and partners. As a result,
Tridonic is able to contribute its specialist knowledge and
technological expertise to ecosystems that extend beyond
the lighting sphere.
One key technological focus in the year under
review was on using wireless technology to enable and
expand outdoor and indoor applications. To this end,
the team at the brand’s own software development centre
in Porto was further reinforced. Tridonic supplies both
the hardware and the software for value-added intelligent
lighting solutions.
Another priority was the introduction of a tech­
nology concept that supports the digitalization of towns
and cities. Here the brand successfully cooperated
with partners actively involved in planning and designing
smart cities. With SIDEREA, Tridonic supplies a portfolio
of solutions for digital and resource-efficient outdoor
lighting based on open standards. Tridonic combines this
technology with a platform for smart city applications
that enables municipalities to convert data into valuable
information on which to base their decisions. Residents
stand to benefit from greater safety and improved lighting
of roads, footpaths and squares. In 2021, the Austrian
federal state of Vorarlberg and the Vorarlberg chamber
of commerce awarded Tridonic the Vorarlberg Innovation
Prize for this concept.
Wireless and connectivity
The underlying principle of both technology concepts –
wireless and connectivity – is to create open systems that
not only deliver added value to as many market partici­pants
as possible, but also foster cooperation and the expansion
of the respective ecosystems.
Tridonic’s wireless products based on Casambi
Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology lead the way
in modern wireless lighting control solutions. They enable
connected and interoperable solutions, delivering
effortless wireless luminaire connectivity. These solutions

– mit dem Blick über den eigenen Geschäftshorizont hin-
aus und im Austausch mit Kunden und Partnern. Auf diese
Weise gelingt es Tridonic, seine spe­zifischen Kenntnisse
und Technologiekompetenzen in Ökosysteme, die über das
Licht hinaus reichen, einzubringen.
Ein Technologieschwerpunkt im Berichtszeitraum
war, Anwendungen in Outdoor und Indoor mit Wireless-
Technologie zu ermöglichen und zu erweitern. Dazu wurde
das Team im unternehmenseigenen Software-Entwicklungs­
zentrum in Porto weiter verstärkt. Tridonic ist Anbieter
sowohl von Hardware als auch von Software für intelligente
Lichtlösungen mit Mehrwert.
Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt war die Einführung
eines Technologiekonzepts, das die Digitalisierung von
Städten unterstützt. Dabei war die Kooperation mit Partnern
erfolgreich, die in der Planung und Gestaltung von Smart
Cities aktiv sind. Mit SIDEREA liefert Tridonic ein Lösungs-
portfolio für eine digitale und ressourcenschonende
Außen­beleuchtung auf Basis offener Standards. Tridonic
kombiniert diese Technologie mit einer Plattform für Smart-
City-Anwendungen. Kommunen können damit Daten in
wert­volle Informationen umwandeln und für Entscheidungen

Tridonic-Wireless-Produkte auf Basis der
Bluetooth-Low-Energy-Technologie von Casambi sind füh-
rend bei modernen, drahtlosen Lichtsteuerungslösungen.

are scalable from the simple management of individual
luminaires through to industrial-scale systems.
Intelligent solutions for sustainable outdoor
lighting were also taken forward in the year under review –
here too in collaboration with partners. In the DOLL Living
Lab, scientists, urban planners, lighting engineers and
luminaire manufacturers test innovative developments
for smart city applications. This facility near Copenhagen
provides a real-life test site. Tridonic has been involved in
expanding a pilot project here with the aim of offering cities
and municipalities an intelligent lighting infra­struc­ture that
takes the needs of both people and nature into account.
In the year under review, tests were conducted to see how
Tunable White lighting solutions can be usefully deployed
in street lighting – with the aim of dynamically adapting
the colour temperature to changing daylight conditions.
Along with light intensity, light colour also affects how
safe and comfortable people feel in outdoor spaces.
In Spain, Tridonic successfully contributed to
a highly challenging street lighting project. The city of
Terrassa, around 30 kilometres from Barcelona, is rolling
out a climate action programme. Modernizing its public
lighting marked a key milestone on the road to becoming
an energy-efficient, climate-friendly city. This called
for a uniform lighting control system for street lights from
multiple manufacturers. In all, 29,000 light points were
replaced with some 30 different LED luminaires from seven
suppliers – which meant that an open system using inter­
operable technology was needed. Dimmable LED drivers
from Tridonic met these requirements to per­fec­tion, while
Tridonic’s parameterization software allows the street
lights to be integrated more easily and config­ured flexibly.
Tridonic’s drivers can also be customized after installation –
either in situ or from the central control unit.
Open systems
Interoperability and open systems also have a part to
play in indoor lighting in smart buildings. The year under
review brought the expansion of software solutions and
wireless lighting control hardware in particular. The new
sceneCOM S application controller enables easy lighting
management with luminaires of all makes equipped with
DALI-2 standard LED drivers. The controller has a Bluetooth
interface for wireless lighting control, which also makes
for simple firmware updates via a Bluetooth app.
Tridonic controllers were successfully deployed
in a project in New Zealand. The Institute of Environmental
Science & Research (ESR) in Porirua, near Wellington,
is one of eight national research institutes in New Zealand.
Its teams carry out research and advise the New Zealand
government on issues around healthcare and the health
of the environment. As part of the modernisation of the
Kenepuru Science Centre, an extensive building complex,
the existing lighting system was replaced with energy-
efficient LED luminaires. For improved energy efficiency,
the light in the laboratories and offices was to be controlled
automatically using daylight and presence control. An
easy-to-use light management system was required that
would allow lighting conditions to be adapted to the tasks
and needs of the employees. Now the ESR facility managers
can make changes in individual building sections flexibly,

triellen Maßstab.
Intelligente Lösungen für eine nachhaltige
Außen­beleuchtung wurden weiterentwickelt und das
ebenfalls in Partnerschaften. Im DOLL Living Lab testen
Wissenschaftler, Stadtplaner, Lichtingenieure und
Leuchten­hersteller innovative Entwicklungen für Smart-
City-Anwendungen. Nahe Kopenhagen steht ein Real-
Life-Testfeld zur Verfügung. Tridonic hat hier ein Pilot­
projekt erweitert, mit dem Ziel, Städten und Kommunen
eine intelligente Beleuchtungsinfrastruktur zu bieten,
die Mensch und Natur gleichermaßen berücksichtigt. Dort
wurde im Berichtszeitraum erprobt, wie sich Tunable-
White-Licht­lösungen sinnvoll in der Straßenbeleuchtung
einsetzen lassen. Dabei geht es um die dynamische
Anpassung der Farbtemperatur an den Tageslichtverlauf.
Nicht nur die Lichtstärke, sondern auch die Lichtfarbe
hat Einfluss auf ein Sicherheits- und Komfortgefühl der
Menschen im Außenbereich.
In Spanien konnte Tridonic ein besonders
anspruchsvolles Projekt in der Straßenbeleuchtung erfolg-
reich bedienen. Rund 30 Kilometer von Barcelona ent­fernt
hat die Stadt Terrassa ein Klimaschutzprogramm aufge-
legt. Mit der Modernisierung der öffentlichen Beleuchtung
wurde ein bedeutender Meilenstein auf dem Weg zur
energie­effizienten, klimafreundlichen Stadt erreicht. Dazu
war eine einheitliche Lichtsteuerung für Straßenleuchten
vieler verschiedener Fabrikate nötig. 29.000 Lichtpunkte
wurden durch LED-Leuchten ausgetauscht. Insgesamt
sind rund 30 Leuchten-Modelle von sieben verschiedenen
Anbietern im Einsatz. Gefordert war also ein offenes System
und Interoperabilität der einzusetzenden Technologie.
Dimmbare LED-Treiber von Tridonic erfüllen diese Anforde­
rungen perfekt und mithilfe der Tridonic-Parametrierungs-
software wird eine vereinfachte Integration und flexible
Konfiguration der Straßenleuchten möglich. Auch nach der
Installation lassen sich die Treiber von Tridonic anpassen –
vor Ort oder von einem zentralen Schaltschrank aus.
Offene Systeme
Interoperabilität und offene Systeme spielen ebenfalls
bei der Indoor-Beleuchtung in Smart Buildings eine Rolle.
Im Berichtszeitraum wurden insbesondere die Software­
lösungen und Hardware für die drahtlose Lichtsteuerung
erweitert. Der neue Application Controller sceneCOM S
ermöglicht ein leichtes Lichtmanagement mit Leuchten
aller Fabrikate, die mit LED-Treibern nach Standard DALI-2
ausgerüstet sind. Der Controller ist mit einer Bluetooth-
Schnittstelle für die drahtlose Lichtsteuerung ausgestattet.
Damit wird auch eine einfache Firmware-Aktualisierung
über Bluetooth App ermöglicht.
Die Controller wurden erfolgreich in einem Pro-
jekt in Neuseeland eingesetzt. Das Institute of Environmental

the building users automatically get exactly the light they

Customer-centric service The brand’s practical apps for its luminaire manufacturer
customers were enhanced in the year under review
and new ones were added. The Tridonic companionSUITE
software collection supports luminaire manufacturers
with the generation, transmission and control of driver
settings. The software is compatible with all common
interfaces such as DALI-2 or NFC. The aim is to optimize
processes over the long term and counteract production
errors. During subsequent quality management, Tridonic
companionSUITE also makes it easier to analyse and
correct potential sources of error.

Gebäudekomplex, wurde die bestehende Beleuchtung
gegen energieeffiziente LED-Leuchten ausgetauscht. Für
mehr Energieeffizienz sollte das Licht in den Laboratorien
und Büroräumen über Tageslicht- und Präsenzsteuerung
automatisch gesteuert werden. Ein einfach zu bedienendes
Lichtmanagementsystem sollte die Möglichkeit geben,
die Lichtverhältnisse an die Aufgaben und Bedürfnisse der
Mitarbeitenden anzupassen. Über ein Tablet sind die
Facility Manager des ESR nun jederzeit in der Lage, flexibel
Änderungen in den einzelnen Gebäudebereichen vorzu-
nehmen, sei es eine Anpassung der Lichtstärke, eine Neu-
gruppierung der LED-Leuchten oder die Definition neuer
Beleuchtungsszenarien. Einen Großteil der Anpassung
über­nimmt der kompakte DALI-Controller sceneCOM S.
Voll­automatisch erhalten die Anwender so immer genau das
Licht, das sie gerade benötigen. Gleichzeitig sinken durch
Tageslicht- und Präsenzsteuerung die Betriebskosten.
Kundenorientierter Service Als Service für Kunden in der Leuchtenherstellung
wurden nützliche Apps weiterentwickelt und eingeführt.
Die Software Collection Tridonic companionSUITE
unterstützt Leuchtenhersteller bei der Generierung, Über­
tragung und Kontrolle von Treibereinstellungen. Die
Software ist mit den gängigen Schnittstellen wie DALI-2
oder NFC kompa­tibel. Ihr Ziel besteht darin, Prozesse
nach­haltig zu opti­mieren und Fehlern in der Fertigung ent­
gegenzuwirken. Im anschließenden Qualitätsmanagement
erleichtert Tridonic companionSUITE zudem die Analyse
und Behebung potenzieller Fehlerquellen.

for train­ing and networking; and with a newly opened
Light Forum at the company’s Dornbirn headquarters.
Here, a former industrial building has been transformed
into a unique lighting centre where society and
business, art and art lovers can meet and engage in

Supporting human perception: Spectrum and DDL Taking existing technologies forward in the context of
global megatrends is part of our DNA as an innovative busi­
ness. Among the user-driven innovations of the past year
is Spectrum technology – developed in coop­er­ation with
LED manufacturer Nichia. This new kind of LED light­ing
can imitate natural daylight better than ever before, making
it less tiring for the eyes. In the Double Dynamic Lighting
(DDL) research project, Zumtobel joined forces with
the renowned Aalborg University Copenhagen and leading
lighting companies to develop a concept that optimally
combines natural and artificial, direct and in­di­rect light
within a space. The outcome? Dynamic indoor lighting with
a highly energising effect.
20 years of TECTON, 10 years of PANOS
New technologies are also revolutionising existing
lighting solutions: 20 years after its launch, our TECTON
continuous-row lighting system, designed by Duncan
Jackson and Eoin Billings, is the Group’s most successful
product – one that has evolved with every technological
advance since its creation: from fluorescent tubes to
energy-efficient LED luminaires; from wired interfaces to
IoT (Internet of Things) infrastructure, from 2001 to 2021.
State-of-the-art, but with an uncompromising
focus on users and sustainability: such are the hallmark
qualities of PANOS infinity, designed by Christopher
Redfern. Ten years after its launch, this range remains the
market leader in the downlight segment – combining
excellent light quality with outstanding energy efficiency.
Red Dot Awards – a trio of winners Beauty lies not just in the eye of the beholder but also in the
judgement of the international jury for the renowned Red
Dot Design Awards. And in spring 2021 the jury members
presented awards in the Product Design category to no

The following text is an extract from the Group Manage­
ment Report. The full text version has been published

General Economic Environment
The dangers of the Coronavirus have still not been
averted one year after the beginning of the pandemic, even
when the increasing rate of vaccinations provides
grounds for optimism. The global economic outlook is still
con­nected with substantial uncertainty, above all in con­
nection with the further course of the Covid-19 crisis. The
International Monetary Fund (IMF) estimated the decline
in world­wide growth at 3.3% in 2020 (2019: plus 2.8%).
Europe, in particular, was confronted with an increasing
loss of momentum, whereby the eurozone GDP fell
by 6.6% in 2020 (2019: plus 1.3%). The economy in the
D/A/CH region (Germany, Austria, Switzerland), an impor­
tant market for the Zumtobel Group, also weakened. The
German economy contracted by 4.9% (2019 plus 0.6%),
with similar results in Austria (minus 6.6%) and Switzerland
(minus 3.0%). The United Kingdom recorded a sharp
drop of 9.9% (2019: plus 1.4%). The growth rates in two other
major European economies were also negative: France
at minus 8.2% and Italy at minus 8.9%. The USA followed
this downward trend with a GDP decline of 3.5% (2019:
plus 2.2%). In contrast, China generated growth of 2.3%
in 2020 (2019: 5.8%).
Due to the wide range of political actions and
measures, the Covid-19 recession will most likely leave
smaller scars than the global financial crisis in 2008.
The future development of the economy will, however, be
dependent on many different factors: on the possible
effectiveness or ineffectiveness of the vaccines against
the new Covid-19 variants and a possible extension of
the pandemic; on the effectiveness of political measures
to limit sustained damage to the economy; on the devel­
opment of financial framework conditions and raw material
prices, in part connected with shortages of key components;
and on the adaptability of the economy. In its April 2021
forecast, the International Monetary Fund issued a sub­
stantial upward correction to its January estimate for
the global economy and now expects an increase of 6.0%
in 2021 (January update: increase of 0.5%). Strong GDP
growth is projected for China (8.4%) and the USA (6.4%),
with an improvement also expected in the United Kingdom

for 2022 points to an increase of 4.4% in the global
economy, assuming the normalisation of economic activity
and support from monetary and fiscal policies.

Gesamtwirtschaftliches Umfeld
Ein Jahr nach Beginn der Covid-19-Pandemie sind die
Gefahren des Virus noch nicht gebannt, auch wenn die zu-
nehmende Durchimpfung die allgemeine Stimmung hebt.
Die globalen Wirtschaftsaussichten sind weiterhin mit
einer hohen Unsicherheit behaftet, vor allem in Bezug auf
den weiteren Verlauf der Pandemie. Der Internationale
Währungsfonds (IWF) bezifferte das globale Wirtschafts-
wachstum im Jahr 2020 auf minus 3,3 % (Vorjahr plus 2,8 %).
Insbesondere Europa musste eine Abschwächung der
Konjunktur hinnehmen. Der Euroraum verzeichnete 2020
einen Rückgang des Bruttoinlandsprodukts von minus
6,6 % (Vorjahr plus 1,3 %). In der für die Zumtobel Group
wichtigen D/A/CH-Region (Deutschland, Österreich,
Schweiz) war das Wirtschaftswachstum ebenfalls negativ.
Deutschlands Wirtschaft schrumpfte um minus 4,9 % (2019
plus 0,6 %), ähnlich war die Lage in Österreich (minus 6,6 %)
und der Schweiz (minus 3,0 %). In Großbritannien sank die
Wirtschaftsleistung um minus 9,9 % (Vorjahr plus 1,4 %). Mit
Frankreich (minus 8,2 %) und Italien (minus 8,9 %) mussten
weitere große europäische Volkswirtschaften negative
Wachstumsraten hinnehmen. Die USA verzeichneten eben-
falls eine negative Wachstumsrate: Das BIP-Wachstum
lag bei minus 3,5 % (Vorjahr plus 2,2 %). Chinas Wirtschaft
erzielte im Jahr 2020 ein Wachstum von 2,3 % (2019 5,8 %).
Wegen der Vielzahl ergriffener politischer Maß-
nahmen wird die Covid-19-Rezession wahrscheinlich
kleinere Narben hinterlassen als die globale Finanzkrise
2008. Die künftige Entwicklung wird vom Verlauf der
Gesundheitskrise abhängen, u. a. von diesen Faktoren:
ob sich die neuen Covid-19-Stämme als anfällig gegenüber
Impfstoffen erweisen oder die Pandemie verlängern;
von der Wirksamkeit politischer Maßnahmen zur Begren-
zung anhaltender wirtschaftlicher Schäden; von der
Entwick­lung der finanziellen Rahmenbedingungen und der
Entwicklung der Rohstoffpreise sowie teilweise verbunden
mit Eng­pässen bei Schüsselkomponenten; und von der
Anpassungsfähigkeit der Wirtschaft. In seiner jüngsten
Prognose vom April 2021 hat der Internationale Währungs-
fonds seine Prognose für die Weltwirtschaft deutlich
nach oben korrigiert: Er erwartet für 2021 nunmehr einen
Anstieg der globalen Wirtschaftsleistung von 6,0 %, nach-
dem im Januar-Update ein Wachstum von 0,5 % ange­
kündigt worden war. Besonders für China (8,4 %) und die
USA (6,4 %) wird für 2021 ein deutliches Plus beim Brutto­
inlandsprodukt erwartet. Auch für Großbritannien (5,3 %)
und die Eurozone (4,4 %) wird ein Anstieg der Wirtschafts-
leistung prognostiziert. Für das Jahr 2022 rechnet der
IWF in seinem Basis-Szenario, unter der Annahme einer
Normalisierung der Wirtschaftstätigkeit und unterstützt
durch geld- und fiskalpolitische Maßnahmen, mit einem
Wachstum der Weltwirtschaft von 4,4 %.

Revenues Revenues recorded by the Zumtobel Group fell by 7.7%
to EUR 1,044.5 million in 2020/2021 (2019/2020:
EUR 1,131.3 million) as a result of the ongoing Corona
pandemic. The first quarter saw the highest decline,
while the remainder of the year brought a steady improve­
ment. The fourth quarter, which reflected the crisis-
related, weaker development of revenues in 2019/2020,
was clearly stronger in 2020/2021. Revenue development
was influenced by negative foreign exchange effects
of EUR 11.7 million, primarily from the devaluation of the
Turkish lira, British pound, UAE dirham and US dollar.
After an adjustment for these foreign exchange effects,
the decline in revenues equalled 6.6%.

The Lighting Segment also registered a trend reversal
in revenues since the beginning of the Covid-19 crisis.
The gap to the previous year narrowed to minus 6.1%
in 2020/2021. Germany, the United Kingdom and Sweden
reported the highest revenue declines. Segment revenues
totalled EUR 794.1 million (2019/2020: EUR 845.5 million).
After an adjustment for negative foreign exchange effects,
which were only offset in part by a very positive Swiss
franc, revenues fell by 5.4% year-on-year.
In the Components Segment, revenues fell by
11.3% in 2020/2021 (FX-adjusted: minus 9.5%). The
down­turn was particularly strong in the United Kingdom,
France, Austria and Sweden. Revenue growth in this
segment was also negatively influenced by negative foreign
exchange effects, especially from the Turkish lira.

Umsatzentwicklung Die Umsatzerlöse der Zumtobel Group sanken im
Geschäftsjahr 2020/2021 um 7,7 % auf 1.044,5 Mio. EUR
(Vorjahr 1.131,3 Mio. EUR), bedingt durch die anhaltende
Coronapandemie. Vor allem im ersten Quartal war der
Umsatzrückgang am deutlichsten ausgeprägt, konnte
jedoch im Jahresverlauf kontinuierlich reduziert werden.
Das vierte Quartal, das im Vorjahr bereits deutlich von
einem krisenbedingten Umsatzrückgang gezeichnet war,
lag jedoch deutlich über dem Vorjahresniveau. Negative
Wechselkursentwicklungen in Höhe von 11,7 Mio. EUR be-
lasteten zu­sätzlich die Umsatzentwicklung und resultierten
im Wesentlichen aus der Abwertung der Türkischen Lira,
des Britischen Pfunds, des VAE-Dirham und des US-Dollar.
Bereinigt um Währungseffekte sank der Umsatz im
Berichtsjahr um 6,6 %.

Das Lighting Segment verzeichnete seit Beginn der
Covid-19-Krise ebenfalls eine Trendwende in der Umsatz-
entwicklung. Die Lücke gegenüber dem Vorjahr wurde im
Jahresverlauf mit minus 6,1 % weiter reduziert. Besonders
deutlich fielen die Umsatzrückgänge in Deutschland,
Großbritannien und Schweden aus. Der Segmentumsatz
betrug 794,1 Mio. EUR (Vorjahr 845,5 Mio. EUR). Bereinigt
um negative Währungseffekte, nur teilweise kompensiert
durch einen sehr positiven Schweizer Franken, sank der
Umsatz um 5,4 % gegenüber dem Vorjahr.
Im Components Segment sank der Umsatz
im Geschäftsjahr 2020/2021 um 11,3 % (währungsbereinigt
minus 9,5 %). Besonders deutlich fielen die Rückgänge in
Großbritannien, Frankreich, Österreich und Schweden aus.
Zudem belastete die negative Wechsel­kurs­ent­wicklung,
insbesondere der Türkischen Lira, die Umsatzentwicklung.

In spite of the crisis, the Asia & Pacific region recorded
revenue growth and the core D/A/CH a comparatively low
decline in 2020/2021.
The D/A/CH region, the largest market in the
Zumtobel Group, reported a 3.8% drop in revenues
(FX-adjusted: minus 4.1%) to EUR 347.6 million in 2020/2021.
The decline was moderate in Switzerland despite the
Covid-19 crisis, but notably stronger in Germany. Austria
actually managed to generate an increase for the financial
year. Revenues in the Northern and Western Europe region
fell by 12.1% to EUR 256.8 million, whereby the declines
were particularly strong in the United Kingdom, Sweden
and Norway. Revenues in the Southern and Eastern
Europe region fell by 7.6% to EUR 266.7 million, with Italy,
the Czech Republic and Greece reporting the largest
declines. The Asia & Pacific region generated growth of 2.7%
(FX-adjusted: plus 3.7%) in revenues to EUR 108.3 million.
This was the only region with a year-on-year increase in
revenues for 2020/2021. Revenues in the countries assigned
to the “Rest of the World” dropped by 22.4% (FX-adjusted:
minus 18.4%) to EUR 65.1 million, above all based on
declines in the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and
the USA.

Erfreulicherweise konnte in der Region Asien & Pazifik
trotz Krise ein Wachstum erzielt werden, und der Umsatz-
rückgang der Kernregion D/A/CH fiel trotz Krise ver-
gleichsweise gering aus.
In der für die Zumtobel Group umsatzstärksten
Region D/A/CH sank der Umsatz im Geschäftsjahr
2020/2021 um 3,8 % (währungsbereinigt minus 4,1 %) auf
347,6 Mio. EUR. Während die Umsatzentwicklung in der
Schweiz trotz der Covid-19-Krise nur moderat rückläufig
war, fiel der Rückgang in Deutschland deutlicher aus.
In Österreich konnte sogar ein Wachstum verzeichnet
werden. In der Region Nord- und Westeuropa sanken die
Umsätze um 12,1 % auf 256,8 Mio. EUR. Der Umsatzrück-
gang war besonders deutlich in Großbritannien, Schweden
und Norwegen. In der Region Süd- und Osteuropa sank
der Umsatz um 7,6 % auf 266,7 Mio. EUR. Die deutlichsten
Umsatzrückgänge wurden in Italien, Tschechien und
Griechenland verzeichnet. Die Region Asien & Pazifik erzielte
ein Wachstum von 2,7 % (währungsbereinigt plus 3,7 %).
Der Umsatz stieg auf 108,3 Mio. EUR. Die Region Asien
& Pazifik war die einzige Region, in der die Umsatzerlöse
über dem Vorjahres­niveau lagen. Die übrigen Weltregionen
wiesen einen Umsatzrückgang um 22,4 % (währungsberei-
nigt minus 18,4 %) auf 65,1 Mio. EUR aus. Am deutlichsten
fielen die Umsatzrückgänge in den Vereinigten Arabischen
Emiraten, Saudi-Arabien und den USA aus.

Earnings
Group EBIT adjusted for special effects fell to
EUR 45.5 million in 2020/2021 (2019/2020: EUR 53.9 million),
and the return on sales declined from 4.8% to 4.4%.
The reduction of fixed costs made an important contri­bu­
tion to earnings: of particular importance here were
the government support measures to lessen the impact
of the Covid-19 crisis – for example, the short-time
work models approved by various governments – which
created notice­able relief for personnel expenses. As a
result, SG & A expenses were EUR 25.4 million lower than
the previous year. The material cost ratio also declined
in 2020/2021, above all due to the favourable exchange rate
for the US dollar, a major procurement currency. Towards
the end of the 2020/2021 financial year, the Zumtobel Group
was increasingly confronted with rising raw material
prices and substantially higher freight costs. Adjusted EBIT
fell from EUR 48.3 million to EUR 37.5 million in the Lighting
Segment and from EUR 23.0 million to EUR 22.7 million
in the Components Segment.
The gross profit margin excluding special
effects (after development costs) for the Zumtobel Group
declined to 32.3% in 2020/2021 (2019/2020: 32.8%).
Devel­op­ment costs included in the cost of goods sold
rose by EUR 2.5 million to EUR 61.8 million (2019/2020:
EUR 59.2 million).
Selling expenses (incl. research) fell by 7.9%
to EUR 262.6 million in 2020/2021 (2019/2020:
EUR 285.2 million) following a reduction in personnel,
marketing, travel and transport costs. Administrative
expenses were 5.1% lower at EUR 38.9 million (2019/2020:
EUR 41.0 million), primary due to a decline in consulting
fees. Other operating income, excluding special effects,
amounted to EUR 9.6 million (2019/2020: 8.9 million)
and con­sisted chiefly of licence income and public-
sector subsidies.
Negative special effects of EUR 2.1 million were
recorded in 2020/2021 (2019/2020: minus EUR 18.8 million).
They are related, above all, to expenses for the termi-
nation of production at the acdc facility in Barrowford, UK,
and its subsequent relocation to the plant in Spennymoor,
the write-off of production equipment, the restructuring
of back-office activities and reorgan­i­sation measures
in the sales organisation and at various plant locations.
These costs were contrasted by the release of provisions
related to the return of rented space before the end
of a contract term as well as the Europhane restructuring
and an agreement in a legal dispute.
Financial results improved by EUR 3.1 million to
minus EUR 9.3 million (2019/2020: minus EUR 12.4 million).
Interest expense, which is attributable primarily to the
current credit agreements and to finance leases, totalled
minus EUR 5.5 million (2019/2020: minus EUR 7.0 million).
Other financial income and expenses amounted to
minus EUR 3.8 million (2019/2020: minus EUR 5.6 million).
The fluctuations in the fair value of financial instruments
resulted from the high volatility on the foreign currency
market, especially in connection with the Turkish lira, British
pound, UAE dirham and US dollar.
Profit before tax totalled EUR 34.0 million
in 2020/2021 (2019/2020: EUR 22.7 million). Tax income
equalled EUR 11.6 million (2019/2020: tax expense of

Ertragsentwicklung
Das um Sondereffekte bereinigte Gruppen-EBIT sank
im Geschäftsjahr 2020/2021 auf 45,5 Mio. EUR (Vorjahr
53,9 Mio. EUR). Die bereinigte Umsatzrendite sank von 4,8 %
auf 4,4 %. Ein wesentlicher Ergebnisbeitrag wurde durch
Fixkosteneinsparungen erzielt, wobei hier insbesondere
staatliche Unterstützungsmaßnahmen zur Abfederung
der Covid-19-Krise, wie zum Beispiel verschiedene Kurz­
arbeitsmodelle der Regierungen, zu einer spürbaren
Entlastung bei den Personalkosten geführt haben. So san-
ken die SG & A-Aufwendungen gegenüber dem Vorjahr
um 25,4 Mio. EUR. Zudem konnte der Materialkostenanteil,
insbesondere aufgrund des günstigen USD-Kurses,
einer wesentlichen Einkaufswährung, gesenkt werden.
Gegen Ende des Geschäftsjahres war die Zumtobel Group
allerdings verstärkt von gestiegenen Rohstoffpreisen
und deutlich erhöhten Frachtkosten betroffen. Im Lighting
Segment sank das bereinigte EBIT von 48,3 Mio. EUR
auf 37,5 Mio. EUR. Im Components Segment betrug das
bereinigte EBIT 22,7 Mio. EUR (Vorjahr 23,0 Mio. EUR).
Die Bruttoergebnismarge ohne Sondereffekte
(nach Entwicklungsaufwendungen) der Zumtobel Group
sank im Geschäftsjahr 2020/2021 auf 32,3 % (Vorjahr 32,8 %).
Die in den Kosten der umgesetzten Leistungen enthal­
tenen Entwicklungskosten stiegen im Berichtsjahr
um 2,5 Mio. EUR auf 61,8 Mio. EUR (Vorjahr 59,2 Mio. EUR).
Die Vertriebskosten (inkl. Forschung) sanken
im Geschäftsjahr 2020/2021 um 7,9 % auf 262,6 Mio. EUR
(Vorjahr 285,2 Mio. EUR) infolge gesunkener Personal-,
Marketing-, Reise- und Transportkosten. Die Verwaltungs-
kosten sanken um 5,1 % auf 38,9 Mio. EUR (Vorjahr
41,0 Mio. EUR), im Wesentlichen infolge verringerter Bera-
tungsaufwendungen. Das sonstige betriebliche Ergebnis
ohne Sondereffekte mit 9,6 Mio. EUR (Vorjahr 8,9 Mio. EUR)
beinhaltet im Wesentlichen Lizenzeinnahmen und För­
derungen der öffentlichen Hand.
Im Geschäftsjahr 2020/2021 wurden negative
Sondereffekte in Höhe von 2,1 Mio. EUR (Vorjahr minus
18,8 Mio. EUR) verbucht. Sie betrafen im Wesentlichen Auf-
wendungen im Zusammenhang mit der Schließung der
acdc-Produktionsstätte in Barrowford, Großbritannien, und
deren Verlagerung ins Werk Spennymoor, der Abschrei-
bung von Produktionsanlagen, der Restrukturierung von
Backoffice-Tätigkeiten sowie Reorganisationsmaß­nahmen
in der Sales-Organisation und diversen Werkstandorten.
Dem gegenüber standen Auflösungen von Rück­stellungen
in Zusammenhang mit der früh­zeitigen Rückgabe von
Mietflächen, der Europhane-Restrukturierung und der
Einigung in einem Rechtsstreit.
Das Finanzergebnis verbesserte sich im
Berichtsjahr gegenüber dem Vorjahr um 3,1 Mio. EUR auf
minus 9,3 Mio. EUR (Vorjahr minus 12,4 Mio. EUR). Im Zins-
ergebnis, im Wesentlichen Zinsaufwendungen für laufende
Kreditverträge und Finanzierungsleasingvereinbarungen,
wurden minus 5,5 Mio. EUR (Vorjahr minus 7,0 Mio. EUR)
ausgewiesen. Die übrigen finanziellen Aufwendungen
und Erträge betrugen minus 3,8 Mio. EUR (Vorjahr minus
5,6 Mio. EUR). Die Schwankungen in der Marktbewertung
von Finanzinstrumenten resultierten aus der hohen
Vola­tilität am Devisenmarkt, insbesondere im Zusammen-
hang mit der Türkischen Lira, dem Britischen Pfund,
dem VAE-Dirham und dem US-Dollar.

of EUR 16.2 million. Net profit for the 2020/2021 financial
year therefore totalled EUR 45.6 million (2019/2020:
EUR 14.5 million). Earnings per share for the shareholders
of Zumtobel Group AG (basic EPS based on 43.1 million
shares) equalled EUR 1.06 (2019/2020: EUR 0.33).

im Berichtsjahr 34,0 Mio. EUR (Vorjahr 22,7 Mio. EUR).
Der ausgewiesene Steuerertrag betrug 11,6 Mio. EUR
(Vorjahr Steueraufwand minus 8,3 Mio. EUR), der einen
laufenden Steueraufwand von minus 4,6 Mio. EUR
und einen Ertrag aus latenten Steuern von 16,2 Mio. EUR
beinhaltet. Das Jahresergebnis stieg auf 45,6 Mio. EUR
(Vorjahr 14,5 Mio. EUR). Für die Aktionäre der Zumtobel
Group AG ergab sich ein Ergebnis je Aktie (unverwässert
bei 43,1 Mio. Aktien) von 1,06 EUR (Vorjahr 0,33 EUR).

Cash flow, financial and asset position
Cash flow from operating results increased from
EUR 101.3 million in the previous year to EUR 115.7 million,
primarily due to the improvement in profitability.
Further progress was made in working capital
management during the reporting year. The improvement
in absolute numbers resulted from the continued opti­mi­
sation of inventory controls. Trade receivables were
reduced slightly, despite the decline in revenues, based on
con­sistent receivables management during the Covid-19
crisis. The receivables sold through factoring agreements
totalled EUR 69.7 million at the end of the 2020/2021
financial year (2019/2020: EUR 62.5 million). Working capital
amounted to EUR 152.5 million as of 30 April 2021, which
represents a reduction of EUR 16.8 million compared with
the balance on 30 April 2020. As a percentage of rolling
12-month rev­en ­ ues, working capital declined from 15.0%
in the pre­vious year to 14.6%. The change in other oper­at­
ing positions amounted to EUR 17.7 million (2019/2020:
EUR 6.6 million). The cash inflows reported under this
position resulted chiefly from additions to provisions and
guarantees and from a decline in receivables from public
sector subsidies for research and Covid-19 programmes.
Cash flow from operating activities increased from
EUR 108.2 million to EUR 140.7 million in 2020/2021.
The uncertainties caused by the Covid-19
pan­demic were reflected in a substantial year-on-year
decline in investments in non-current assets to
EUR 38.1 million (2019/2020: EUR 57.9 million). These
expenditures consisted mainly of tools and equipment for
new products, expansion and maintenance investments
as well as capi­talised research and development costs
of EUR 12.5 million (2019/2020: EUR 16.5 million). Included
here are invest­ments of EUR 22.2 million (2019/2020:
EUR 34.1 million) in Dornbirn and EUR 5.0 million (2019/2020:
EUR 10.0 million) in the light­ing and components plant
in Serbia (including capi­talised development costs). The
cash flow effects reported under “changes in non-current
and current financial assets” resulted chiefly from gains
and losses realised on interest rate hedges and from an
increase in financial claims for insurance reimbursement.
The increase in cash flow from operating activities and
the reduction in investments were reflected in an improve­
ment in free cash flow to EUR 100.0 million (2019/2020:
EUR 53.3 million).
Cash flow from financing activities was adjusted
to exclude the non-cash additions from lease liabilities.
This position includes cash outflows of EUR 14.8 million
(2019/2020: EUR 15.3 million) for the payment of lease
liabilities and EUR 5.7 million (2019/2020: EUR 7.2 million)
for interest payments. Loans totalling EUR 75.0 million were
repaid during the reporting year, and dividends totalling
EUR 4.3 million were distributed to Zumtobel Group
shareholders (2019/2020: EUR 0 million).
In order to protect the ability to meet its payment
obligations at any time, the Zumtobel Group maintains
liquidity reserves that generally take the form of demand
deposits with banks and can be used to service expected
operating expenses and financial liabilities. The Zumtobel
Group can also access extensive working capital credit
lines to offset liquidity fluctuations arising from business
activities. In addition to the consortium credit agreement

Cashflow-, Finanz- und Vermögenslage
Der Cashflow aus dem operativen Ergebnis erhöhte
sich im Vergleich zum Vorjahr im Wesentlichen aufgrund
der verbesserten Profitabilität von 101,3 Mio. EUR auf
115,7 Mio. EUR.
Im Berichtszeitraum konnte der Working
Capital-Bestand weiter optimiert werden. Die Verbesse-
rung in absoluten Zahlen ist das Ergebnis der weiteren
Optimierung des Managements der Vorräte. Die Forde­
rungen aus Lieferungen und Leistungen konnten bei
niedrigerem Umsatzvolumen durch Fortsetzung des kon-
sequenten Debitorenmanagements in der Covid-19-Krise
leicht reduziert werden. Der Saldo der im Rahmen einer
Factoring-Vereinbarung verkauften Forderungen betrug
zum Bilanzstichtag 69,7 Mio. EUR (Vorjahr 62,5 Mio. EUR).
Zum 30. April 2021 lag der Working Capital-Bestand
mit 152,5 Mio. EUR um 16,8 Mio. EUR unter dem Niveau zum
30. April 2020. In Prozent des rollierenden Zwölfmonats-
umsatzes reduzierte sich der Working Capital-Bestand
im Vergleich zum Vorjahr von 15,0 % auf 14,6 %. Die Ver­
änderung in den sonstigen operativen Positionen betrug
17,7 Mio. EUR (Vorjahr 6,6 Mio. EUR). Die Mittelzuflüsse
in dieser Position sind im Wesentlichen auf die Zuführung
von Rückstellungen und Garantieleistungen sowie auf
geringere Forderungen aus Forschungs- und Covid-19-
Förderungen der öffentlichen Hand zurückzuführen. Der
Cashflow aus dem operativen Geschäft erhöhte sich
im Berichtszeitraum von 108,2 Mio. EUR auf 140,7 Mio. EUR.
Im abgelaufenen Geschäftsjahr lagen die
Investitionen in das Anlagevermögen vor dem Hintergrund
der Covid-19-bedingten Unsicherheiten mit 38,1 Mio. EUR
deutlich unter dem Vorjahr (Vorjahr 57,9 Mio. EUR). Die
Investitionen umfassten im Wesentlichen Investitionen in
Werkzeuge für neue Produkte, Erweiterungs- und Instand-
haltungsinvestitionen sowie aktivierte Entwicklungskosten
in Höhe von 12,5 Mio. EUR (Vorjahr 16,5 Mio. EUR). Darin
sind Investitionen in den Standort Dornbirn in Höhe von
22,2 Mio. EUR (Vorjahr 34,1 Mio. EUR) sowie in das Leuchten-
und Komponentenwerk in Serbien in Höhe von 5,0 Mio. EUR
(Vorjahr 10,0 Mio. EUR) enthalten (inklusive aktivierter
Entwicklungskosten). Die Cashflow-Effekte in der Position
„Veränderungen von lang- und kurzfristigen finanziellen
Vermögenswerten“ resultierten im Wesentlichen aus
realisierten Gewinnen und Verlusten aus Zinssicherungs-
geschäften sowie dem Anstieg finanzieller Ansprüche
aus Versicherungserstattungen. Aufgrund des höheren
Cashflows aus dem operativen Geschäft und der nied­
rigeren Investitionstätigkeit erhöhte sich der Free Cash-
flow im Berichtszeitraum auf 100,0 Mio. EUR (Vorjahr
53,3 Mio. EUR).
Der Cashflow aus der Finanzierungstätigkeit
wurde um nicht zahlungswirksame Zugänge aus Leasing-
verbindlichkeiten bereinigt. Zahlungsmittelabflüsse in
Höhe von 14,8 Mio. EUR (Vorjahr 15,3 Mio. EUR) aus der
Tilgung von Leasingverbindlichkeiten und von 5,7 Mio. EUR
(Vorjahr 7,2 Mio. EUR) für Zinszahlungen sind enthalten.
Der Konsortialkredit wurde in Höhe von 75,0 Mio. EUR
zurückgeführt. Somit bestand keine Inanspruchnahme aus
dem Konsortialkreditvertrag zum Bilanzstichtag. Im
Berichtszeitraum erfolgte eine Dividendenzahlung an die
Aktionäre der Zumtobel Group in Höhe von 4,3 Mio. EUR
(Vorjahr 0 Mio. EUR).

with a current maximum line of EUR 200 million and two
other long-term credit agreements of EUR 40 million each,
the Zumtobel Group had short-term, unsecured credit
lines totalling EUR 69.7 million (2019/2020: EUR 63.3 million)
at its disposal as of 30 April 2021. The interest rates
are dependent on local market conditions and reflect the
prevailing situation in the respective countries.
The consortium credit agreement concluded
on 1 December 2015 represents a major financing
agreement for the Zumtobel Group. It has a term ending
in November 2022 and a maximum line which currently
equals EUR 200 million. As of 30 April 2021, no funds
were drawn under this credit agreement (30 April 2020:
EUR 75 million). In addition, the Zumtobel Group concluded
two long-term credit agreements of EUR 40 million each
with the European Investment Bank (EIB). The related
contracts call for bullet repayment and have terms ending
in September 2024 and February 2025 respectively; both
credit lines were fully drawn as of 30 April 2021. These
major financing agreements include a change of control
clause that would take effect if there were a change in the
absolute majority of voting rights and require compliance
with specific financial covenants (a debt coverage ratio
of less than 3.55 and an equity ratio of more than 23.5%).
The financial covenants were met in full as of 30 April 2021
with a debt coverage ratio of 0.85 (2019/2020: 1.55) and
an equity ratio of 31.5% (2019/2020: 27.7%). The consortium
credit agreement also includes a clause for an increase
of up to EUR 200 million which can be drawn under
certain circumstances.
The balance sheet total declined
to EUR 977.7 million as of 30 April 2021 (2019/2020:
EUR 1,011.7 million). The reduction is primarily attributable
to the cutback in capital expenditure and the resulting
decrease in property, plant and equipment as well as a
lower balance of inventories and receivables from public-
sector subsidies for research and Covid-19 programmes.
As a result, the equity ratio increased from 27.7% on
30 April 2020 to 31.5% on 30 April 2021. The EUR 68.3 million
decline in net liabilities from EUR 165.7 million in the
previous year to EUR 97.3 million as of 30 April 2021 resulted
chiefly from a reduction in borrowings. Gearing – the
ratio of net debt to equity – fell from 59.0% to 31.6%.

Die Zumtobel Group hält zur Sicherung ihrer
jederzeitigen Zahlungsfähigkeit einerseits Liquidität in
Form von mehrheitlich täglich verfügbaren Bankguthaben,
um erwartete betriebliche Aufwendungen und finanzielle
Verbindlichkeiten bedienen zu können, und verfügt
andererseits über umfangreiche Betriebsmittelkreditlinien,
um Liquiditätsschwankungen auszugleichen, die durch
den Geschäftsverlauf auftreten. Zum Bilanzstichtag
30. April 2021 stehen, neben dem Konsortialkreditvertrag
mit einem derzeit ausnutzbaren Rahmen von 200 Mio. EUR
und zwei weiteren langfristigen Kreditverträgen zu
je 40 Mio. EUR, kurzfristige unbesicherte Kontokorrent­
kreditlinien in Höhe von insgesamt 69,7 Mio. EUR (Vorjahr
63,3 Mio. EUR) zur Verfügung. Die Verzinsung hängt
von den lokalen Marktgegebenheiten ab und entspricht
den landesüblichen Konditionen.
Eine wesentliche Finanzierungsvereinbarung
stellte der am 1. Dezember 2015 abgeschlossene Konsor­
tialkreditvertrag mit einer Laufzeit bis November 2022
und einem derzeit ausnutzbaren Rahmen von 200 Mio. EUR
dar. Zum 30. April 2021 gab es in der Zumtobel Group
keinerlei Kreditinanspruchnahme unter diesem Rahmen
(Vorjahr 75 Mio. EUR). Daneben stehen zwei langfristige
Kreditverträge mit der Europäischen Investitionsbank (EIB)
über je 40 Mio. EUR mit endfälliger Tilgung und einer
Laufzeit bis September 2024 beziehungsweise Februar
2025 zur Verfügung, die per 30. April 2021 vollständig
in Anspruch genommen sind. Diese wesentlichen Finan­
zierungsvereinbarungen beinhalten eine Change-of-
Control-Klausel bei Änderung der absoluten Mehrheit der
Stimmrechte und erfordern die Einhaltung von Financial
Covenants (Schuldendeckungsgrad kleiner als 3,55 sowie
Eigenkapitalquote größer als 23,5 %). Zum 30. April 2021
wurden die Financial Covenants dank eines Schulden­
deckungsgrades von 0,85 (Vorjahr 1,55) und einer Eigen­
kapitalquote von 31,5 % (Vorjahr 27,7 %) vollumfänglich
eingehalten. Ferner sieht der Konsortialkreditvertrag eine
Erhöhungsklausel um bis zu 200 Mio. EUR vor, die unter
bestimmten Voraussetzungen gezogen werden kann.
Die Bilanzsumme ist auf 977,7 Mio. EUR (Vorjahr
1.011,7 Mio. EUR) gesunken. Die Verringerung ist im Wesent-
lichen auf das infolge geringerer Investitionstätigkeit ge-
sunkene Sachanlagevermögen, gesunkene Vorräte sowie
auf geringe Forderungen aus Forschungs- und Covid-19-
Förderung zurückzuführen. Die Eigenkapitalquote erhöhte
sich in der Folge von 27,7 % zum 30. April 2020 auf 31,5 %
zum Bilanzstichtag. Die Verringerung der Nettoverbind­
lichkeiten um 68,3 Mio. EUR, von 165,7 Mio. EUR im Vorjahr
auf 97,3 Mio. EUR zum 30. April 2021, ist im Wesentlichen
auf eine verringerte Kreditaufnahme zurückzuführen. Der
Verschuldungsgrad (Gearing) – als Quotient von Netto­
verbindlichkeiten zum Eigenkapital – verringerte sich von
59,0 % auf 31,6 %.

In order to establish and safeguard the nec­es­sary
expertise, the Group places high priority on training and
education – both internally and through external training
programmes. The most important issues in the personnel
area are performance-based remuneration, a positive
working climate, international career opportunities and
measures to support the work-life balance.
The limited number of competent specialists also
creates major challenges for the international Zumtobel
Group to attract qualified applicants and recruit the right
people for the right jobs. Employee development and
systematic professional advancement therefore represent
a key element for sustainable business success.
The framework for human resources develop­
ment (employee reviews and advancement) and the search
and selection process is provided by a company-specific
“competency model”.
Together with the functional description estab­
lished and documented during the employee review,
specific qualification requirements can also be derived
and defined. These requirements are based on the
competency model LIGHT developed by HR – L (Level
of knowledge, skills & experience), I (Innovation & trans­for­
mation), G (Getting things done), H (Habit to develop),
T (Together we shine).
An effective work-life balance for employees
is an important factor for strengthening the Zumtobel
Group’s position as an attractive employer. The key points
in this context are the fundamentally changing demands
of new generations on the labour market and measures
to support the reconciliation of career and family life
for working parents. The Zumtobel Group helps to improve
the work-life balance by continually increasing the offering
of flexible working time models. Part-time employment,
educational leave, sabbaticals, parental leave for fathers,
home office options or other models are arranged
where needed and permitted by the respective position.
The number of part-time employees declined from 8.3%
of the total full-time equivalent workforce in the previous
year to 7.6% in 2020/2021.
Employees in Austria can also take advantage
of a free-time option provided by a works agreement.
It permits a reduction in working hours in exchange
for waiving a salary or wage increase and results in paid
time-off (for example, for age-based work, educational
programmes or to accumulate longer free-time
periods over several years). This free-time option has
been selected by 367 employees. At the end of 2020/2021,
58 employees in Austria were on parental leave
(2019/2020: 66). Mothers and fathers who return to work
after maternity and parental leave are actively supported
in their reintegration.
As an employer with a strong corporate
culture that has grown over many decades, the Zumtobel
Group is well aware of its social responsibility for the
employees in its many companies throughout the world
and remains focused on the further development of
responsible working conditions. The Zumtobel Group
believes in and promotes the open and regular exchange

Ausbildung als auch durch externe Schulungsprogramme.
Die weiteren Eckpfeiler der Personalarbeit sind eine
leistungsgerechte Entlohnung, eine positive Arbeitsatmo-
sphäre, internationale Karrierechancen und Maßnahmen
zur Vereinbarkeit von Beruf und Familie.
Angesichts des Fachkräftemangels ist es auch
für die international agierende Zumtobel Group eine große
Herausforderung, qualifizierte Bewerbungen zu erhalten
und die richtigen Fachkräfte für die entsprechende Position
zu rekrutieren. Die Mitarbeiterentwicklung inklusive der
systematischen beruflichen Förderung und Weiterentwick-
lung von Mitarbeitenden ist daher ein wichtiger Eckpfeiler

Die Entwicklung eines aus der Unternehmens-

Eine ausgewogene Work-Life-Balance für
die Mitarbeitenden hat für die Zumtobel Group eine große
Bedeutung, um die Position als attraktiver Arbeitgeber
weiter auszubauen. Im Fokus stehen dabei die grundsätz-
lich veränderten Bedürfnisse neuer Generationen am
Arbeitsmarkt sowie Maßnahmen für berufstätige Eltern zur
Vereinbarkeit von Beruf und Familie. Die Zumtobel Group
ist dabei bestrebt, die Work-Life-Balance durch den konti-
nuierlichen Ausbau von flexiblen Arbeitszeitmodellen gezielt
zu fördern. Bei Bedarf und wenn es die jeweilige Position
erlaubt, werden Teilzeitregelungen, Bildungs­karenzen,
Sabbaticals, Papamonat, Homeoffice oder andere Modelle
vereinbart. Im abgelaufenen Geschäftsjahr ist der Anteil
der Teilzeitbeschäftigten von 8,3 % im Vorjahr auf 7,6 % (ge-
messen am gesamten Vollzeitäquivalent) leicht gesunken.
Darüber hinaus gibt es eine Betriebsverein­
barung über die Ausübung einer Freizeitoption innerhalb
Österreichs. Dabei können Mitarbeitende, die – aus
persönlichen Gründen – ihre Arbeitszeit verkürzen wollen,
auf die Erhöhung der Ist-Löhne/-Gehälter verzichten
und bezahlte Freizeit vereinbaren (zum Beispiel für alters­
gerechtes Arbeiten, Teilnahme an einer persönlichen
Weiterbildung oder um längere Freizeitperioden über
mehrere Jahre anzusammeln). Diese Freizeitoption wurde
inzwischen von rund 367 Mitarbeitenden in Anspruch
genommen. Zum Geschäftsjahresende befanden sich
58 Mitarbeitende (Vorjahr 66) in Österreich in Elternkarenz.
Mütter und Väter, die nach Mutterschutz und Elternteilzeit
wieder in den Beruf zurückkehren, werden vom Unter­
nehmen aktiv bei der Wiederintegration unterstützt.
Als Arbeitgeber mit einer über Jahrzehnte

Compliance with the legal participation rights
of employees and the principles and standards defined
by the International Labour Organization (ILO) represent
an integral part of the code of conduct, which is mandatory
for all companies in the Zumtobel Group. Collective agree­
ments cover roughly 52% of the worldwide work­force.
Diversity among the workforce is an important
factor for creating an innovative working climate and
protecting the Group’s competitive ability. The men and
women employed by the Zumtobel Group come from
75 different nations, whereby the staff at the corporate
headquarters in Dornbirn, Austria, represent roughly
50 nations. The Zumtobel Group believes in equal oppor­
tunity and rejects all forms of discrimination based on
ethnic origin, nationality, gender, cultural background, age,
disability, religious conviction or sexual orientation. Every
person is unique, valuable and has individual capabilities.
This belief is also reflected in the Zumtobel Group’s code
of conduct, which prohibits all forms of discrimination.
Experience, qualifications and performance form the basis
for personnel decisions in all corporate areas and at all
management levels.
The share of women in the Zumtobel Group’s
workforce equalled 35.7% in 2020/2021 (2019/2020: 35.8%).
There is no specific target for the appointment of women
to management positions, but internal and external
recruiting and personnel development measures are
increasingly aimed in this direction.
The Zumtobel Group recognises that the
con­tinuation of existing initiatives and an open approach
to new initiatives requires a greater share of women
in more highly qualified positions. In order to safeguard
its competitive ability and benefit from a wide range of
different view­points, the Zumtobel Group has set itself the
goal of increasing the share of women and, accordingly,
their representation in the Group each year.

nehmer sowie die Einhaltung der Grundsätze und Normen

arbeiterinnen, fördert diese aber zunehmend im Rahmen
der internen und externen Recruiting- und Personal­-
entwicklungsmaßnahmen.
Die Zumtobel Group ist sich bewusst, dass es
der konsequenten Fortführung der bestehenden sowie
der Offenheit gegenüber neuen Initiativen bedarf, um den
Frauenanteil in höher qualifizierten Positionen zu steigern.
Um die Wettbewerbsfähigkeit zu erhalten und von der
Vielfalt unterschiedlicher Sichtweisen zu profitieren, hat
sich die Zumtobel Group das Ziel gesetzt, den Frauenanteil
im Konzern jährlich anzuheben, also für eine höhere
Repräsentanz von Frauen im Konzern zu sorgen.

is necessary to further strengthen the Zumtobel Group’s
outstanding technology position and innovative power

R & D makes an important contribution to the Zumtobel
Group’s innovative strength. An extensive patent portfolio,
also in new technologies, gives the Zumtobel Group
a competitive advantage as well as access to strategic
cooperation with other companies and the opportunity
to conclude cross-licensing agreements with key market
players. In 2020/2021, the Lighting Segment registered
49 patents (2019/2020: 75) and the Components Segment
72 patents (2019/2020: 70) which underscore the growing
importance of intelligent components. The number
of active commercial property rights – currently 9,027,
including 4,820 patents – speaks for the company’s
exceptional innovative strength.
The Zumtobel Group is placing a greater focus
on the expansion of technology partnerships as a means of
protecting and expanding its competitive product port­folio,
especially in the area of new technologies. Participation
in national and international research projects allows the
Zumtobel Group to continuously demonstrate its brand
reputation and innovation capabilities.
One of the focal points for R & D in the Zumtobel
Group covers new optical concepts for the direction
of light, for example new fibre-optics concepts and
defined light-scattering structures that can be partially
attached to surfaces. An international consortium that
includes Zumtobel Lighting GmbH is currently working
on the H2020 PHABULOUS project together with indus-
trial part­ners and the Fraunhofer-Institut für Organische
Elektronik, Elektronenstrahl- und Plasmatechnik FEP
to develop production processes for microstructures
on freeform surfaces.
Software is also becoming progressively more
important as a differentiating element. In cooperation
with universities and institutes, special communication
processes to realise swarm intelligence in free-standing
luminaires and methods for automatic scene recognition
via image processing in real time were developed and
tested as part of bachelor and master theses. Development

F & E trägt maßgeblich zur Innovationskraft des Unterneh-
mens bei. Für die Zumtobel Group ist ein umfangreiches
Patentportfolio auch im Bereich neuer Technologien
essenziell, um einen Wettbewerbsvorsprung und Zugang
zu strategischen Kooperationen mit anderen Unternehmen
zu erhalten sowie die Möglichkeit zum Abschluss von
Patentlizenzaustauschverträgen mit wichtigen Marktteil-
nehmern zu bekommen. Im Berichtsjahr wurden vom
Lighting Segment 49 (Vorjahr 75) und vom Components
Segment 72 (Vorjahr 70) Patente angemeldet, was die
zunehmende Bedeutung intelligenter Komponenten unter-
streicht. Die Anzahl aktiver gewerblicher Schutzrechte
von derzeit 9.027 – darunter 4.820 Patente – spricht für die
starke Innovationskraft der Zumtobel Group.
Um ihr wettbewerbsfähiges Produktportfolio
beibehalten und gerade bei neuen Technologien weiter
ausbauen zu können, setzt die Zumtobel Group verstärkt
auf den Ausbau von Technologie-Partnerschaften. Ihre
Markenreputation und Innovationskraft kann die Zumtobel
Group bei nationalen und internationalen Forschungs­
projekten immer wieder unter Beweis stellen.
Schwerpunkte der F & E-Aktivitäten der Zumtobel
Group liegen u. a. in neuen optischen Konzepten zur Licht-
lenkung, wie z. B. der Entwicklung von neuen Licht­leiter­
konzepten und definiert streuenden Strukturen, die partiell
auf Oberflächen aufgebracht werden können. So arbeitet ein
internationales Konsortium unter Beteiligung der Zumtobel
Lighting GmbH innerhalb des H2020-Projekts PHABULOUS
mit Partnern wie dem Automobilzulieferer Hella und dem
Fraunhofer-Institut für Organische Elektronik, Elektronen-
strahl- und Plasmatechnik FEP an der Entwicklung von Her-
stellungsverfahren von Mikrostrukturen auf Freiformflächen.
Auch Software wird als Differenzierungs­
merkmal immer wichtiger. In Zusammenarbeit mit Hoch-
schulen und Instituten wurden in mehreren Bachelor-
bzw. Masterarbeiten spezielle Kommunikationsverfahren

projects in the Zumtobel Group increasingly involve
functions and applications “beyond lighting”. In this inter­
disciplinary environment, cooperation with partners is
essential. The Zumtobel Group can rely on long-standing
cooperation with research institutes like V-Research
GmbH, Joanneum Research Forschungsgesellschaft mbH
and Graz University of Technology (all in Austria) as well
as cooperation with industrial partners like Nichia, Digital
Elektronik (Austria), Bartenbach GmbH, zactrack Lighting
Technologies GmbH (Austria), S-Tec (Switzerland),
Electroterminal (Austria) and many others.
Numerical fluid mechanics and finite element
methods are being used to a greater extent in the
modelling and simulation of physical systems. In addition
to conventional thermal simulations, the acoustical and
vibration behaviour (modal analysis) of luminaires under
wind pressure was analysed and the luminaire designs
were optimised where necessary. The long-term
behaviour of LED modules was evaluated and modelled
in a digital twin.
Luminaires and their components are becoming
part of the Internet of Things (IoT). However, the required
interfaces have not yet been defined or are still incomplete
and competing interfaces have already entered the
market. Through its active membership in numerous
alliances that are working on IoT solutions – i.e. Thread and
Bluetooth – the Zumtobel Group is contributing to the
development of industry standards for these interfaces.
The Group is also a member of the Zhaga Alliance
and DiiA (Digital Illumination Interface Alliance), which are
addres­sing the standardisation of lighting components
and digital interfaces for lighting equipment.
The demands for guideline- and standard-
compliant luminaires are becoming more diverse. This
is reflected in the Zumtobel Group’s active participation
in international (IEC, CIE) and European committees
on the safety of components, luminaires and lighting, where
the “quality of light” is one of the main focal points. The
practical implementation of many of these requirements
is supported by the preparation of guidelines which are
issued by national associations (ZVEI, LIA, etc.) and Lighting
Europe. Zumtobel Group employees play an active
role in all these organisations and, in this way, support the
entire industry.
The interconnectivity of luminaires and the
expansion of functions beyond lighting is creating over-
laps with other areas which must also be standardised.
These results frequently support the optimisation
of materials and energy in the construction sector. The
Zumtobel Group also supports efforts in this area with
its active participation.

In diesem bereichsübergreifenden Umfeld sind Koopera­
tionen mit Partnern unerlässlich. Die Zumtobel Group kann
dabei sowohl auf eine langjährige Zusammenarbeit mit
Forschungsinstituten zurückgreifen, darunter V-Research
GmbH, Joanneum Research Forschungsgesell­schaft mbH
und Technische Universität Graz (jeweils Österreich), als
auch auf Kooperationen mit Industriepartnern wie Nichia,
Digital Elektronik (Österreich), Bartenbach GmbH, zactrack
Lighting Technologies GmbH (Österreich), S-Tec (Schweiz),
Electroterminal (Österreich) und vielen anderen.
Zur Modellierung und Simulation physikalischer
Systeme kommen verstärkt numerische Strömungs­
mechanik und Finite-Elemente-Methoden zum Einsatz.
Neben üblichen thermischen Simulationen wurde neu das
akustische und Vibrationsverhalten (Modalanalyse) von
Leuchten im Fall von Windlast analysiert und die entspre-
chenden Leuchtendesigns optimiert. Das Langzeitver­
halten von LED-Modulen wurde untersucht und in einem
digitalen Zwilling modelliert.
Leuchten, und damit auch deren Komponenten,
werden zu Elementen im Internet der Dinge (Internet
of Things, IoT). Die dazu notwendigen Schnittstellen sind
allerdings noch nicht oder nur unzureichend definiert.
Zusätzlich gibt es bereits mehrere Schnittstellen auf
dem Markt, die nun in Konkurrenz zueinander treten. Die
Zumtobel Group trägt dieser Entwicklung dahingehend
Rechnung, dass sie sich in mehreren Gremien an der
Erarbeitung und Standardisierung dieser Schnittstellen
beteiligt. Deshalb ist die Zumtobel Group aktives Mitglied
in den Allianzen Thread und Bluetooth, die an IoT-Lösungen
arbeiten. Im Speziellen engagiert sich die Zumtobel
Group in den Allianzen Zhaga und DiiA (Digital Illumination
Interface Alliance), die sich mit der Standar­disierung
von Leuchtenkomponenten und digitalen Schnittstellen
für Beleuchtungsanlagen beschäftigen.
Die Anforderungen an richtlinienkonforme
und normgerechte Leuchten werden laufend vielfältiger.
Deshalb engagiert sich die Zumtobel Group aktiv in den
internationalen (IEC, CIE) und europäischen Gremien bei
den Themen „Sicherheit von Komponenten und Leuchten“
sowie „Beleuchtung“. Dort liegt der Schwerpunkt insbe­
sondere auf der Thematik „Qualität des Lichts“. Die Imple-
mentierung vieler Anforderungen wird durch die Erstellung
von Leitfäden unterstützt, die von nationalen Verbänden
(ZVEI, LIA etc.) bzw. dem europäischen Lichtverband
Lighting Europe erstellt werden. In all diesen Organisation
arbeiten Mitarbeiter der Zumtobel Group aktiv mit und
unterstützen dadurch die gesamte Industrie.
Weiters entstehen durch die Vernetzung von
Leuchten und die Erweiterung der Funktionalität über Licht
hinaus Schnittmengen mit anderen Bereichen, die nor­
mativ abgestimmt werden müssen. Oft unterstützen diese
Ergebnisse die Material- und Energieoptimierung im Bau-
sektor. Um diese Bemühungen zu unterstützen, arbeitet
die Zumtobel Group auch in diesem Bereich aktiv an der
Gestaltung mit.

Dividend policy Zumtobel Group AG follows a continuous dividend policy,
which calls for a distribution of approximately 30% to
50% of consolidated net profit after the deduction of any
special effects. Net profit totalled EUR 45.6 million in
2020/2021. In view of this solid operating development, the
Manage­ment Board plans to make a recommendation
to the Supervisory Board and, subsequently, to the general
meeting of Zumtobel Group AG, which is scheduled for
30 July 2021, to distribute a dividend of 20 euro cents per
share for the 2020/2021 financial year (previous year:
10 euro cents). That would represent roughly 30% of net
profit, in consideration of the positive special effect from
deferred taxes. The dividend yield would equal 2.4% based
on the closing price for the 2020/2021 financial year.

Dividendenpolitik Die Zumtobel Group AG verfolgt eine kontinuierliche
Dividendenpolitik, die eine Ausschüttung von ca. 30 % bis
50 % des konsolidierten Nettogewinns unter Berücksich­
tigung eventueller Sondereffekte vorsieht. Im Geschäfts-
jahr 2020/2021 konnte ein positives Nettoergebnis von
45,6 Mio. EUR erwirtschaftet werden. Vor dem Hintergrund
dieser soliden operativen Entwicklung plant der Vorstand,
dem Aufsichtsrat und in Folge der Hauptversammlung
der Zumtobel Group AG, die für den 30. Juli 2021 geplant ist,
eine Dividende von 20 Eurocent je Aktie für das Geschäfts-
jahr 2020/2021 vorzuschlagen (Vorjahr 10 Eurocent), was –
unter Berücksichtigung des positiven Sondereffektes aus
latenten Steuern – rund 30 % des Nettogewinns entspricht.
Gemessen am Schlusskurs des Geschäftsjahres 2020/2021
würde die Dividendenrendite damit 2,4 % betragen.

Outlook and Goals
The Corona crisis is not yet over, which means the
uncertainties over the development of the global economy
will remain to a certain degree over the coming months.
Producing companies like the Zumtobel Group will be
confronted with additional challenges due to the situation
on the raw materials market: The limited availability and
rising prices of raw materials have a direct impact not only
on our company, but also on many other market partic­i­
pants. Nonetheless, the general economic trend has
turned increasingly positive in recent months. A wide range
of political measures to stimulate the economy and the
hoped-for positive momentum from the EU Green Deal
support this optimistic outlook. In its April 2021 forecast,
the International Monetary Fund issued a substantial
upward correction to its January estimate for the global
economy and now expects an increase of 6.0% in 2021
(January update: increase of 0.5%). Strong GDP growth is
projected for China (8.4%) and the USA (6.4%), with an
improvement also expected in the United Kingdom (5.3%)
and the eurozone (4.4%). The IMF’s base scenario for
2022 points to an in­crease of 4.4% in the global economy,
assuming the normalisation of economic activity and
support from monetary and fiscal policies.
The Management Board therefore views the
further development of the Zumtobel Group with optimism.
The extensive cost reduction measures implemented
in recent years have produced the desired results, even
though there are opportunities for further optimisation:
The Zumtobel Group is now departing from the restruc­tur­
ing mode, and our fundamentals should also clearly reflect
this in the future. Beginning with the current 2021/2022
financial year, the outlook will no longer be based on EBIT
adjusted for special effects, but on EBIT – meaning the
Group’s operating results. The Management Board sees
the Zumtobel Group well positioned for profitable growth
and expects an increase of 4% to 7% in revenues and an
EBIT margin of 4% to 5% for the 2021/2022 financial year.

Ausblick und Ziele
Die Coronakrise ist noch nicht vorbei, und damit bleibt
manche Unsicherheit im Hinblick auf die Entwicklung der
Weltwirtschaft in den nächsten Monaten bestehen. Für
produzierende Unternehmen wie die Zumtobel Group ist
auch die Situation auf dem Rohstoffmarkt herausfordernd:
Limitierte Verfügbarkeit und steigende Rohstoffpreise
treffen uns genauso unmittelbar wie viele andere Markt-
teilnehmer. Nichtsdestoweniger zeigt die allgemeine wirt-
schaftliche Entwicklung der vergangenen Monate einen
positiven Trend. Eine Vielzahl politischer Maßnahmen zur
Ankurbelung der Konjunktur sowie ein erhofftes positives
Momentum durch den „EU Green Deal“ untermauern
diese erfreuliche Entwicklung. Darüber hinaus hat der Inter-
nationale Währungsfonds in seiner jüngsten Prognose vom
April 2021 seine Prognose für die Weltwirtschaft deutlich
nach oben korrigiert und erwartet für 2021 nunmehr einen
Anstieg der globalen Wirtschaftsleistung um 6,0 %, nach-
dem im Januar-Update ein Wachstum von nur 0,5 % an­
gekündigt worden war. Besonders für China (8,4 %) und
die USA (6,4 %) wird für das Jahr 2021 ein deutliches Plus
im Bruttoinlandsprodukt erwartet. Auch für Großbritannien
(5,3 %) und die Eurozone (4,4 %) wird ein Anstieg der Wirt-
schaftsleistung prognostiziert. Für das Jahr 2022 sieht der
IWF in seinem Basis-Szenario, unter der Annahme einer
Normalisierung der Wirtschaftstätigkeit und unterstützt
durch geld- und fiskalpolitische Maßnahmen, ein Wachstum
der Weltwirtschaft von 4,4 %.
Der Vorstand blickt daher mit Zuversicht auf die
weitere Entwicklung der Zumtobel Group. Die umfassenden
Kostensenkungsmaßnahmen der vergangenen Jahre
tragen Früchte, obwohl natürlich noch weitere Optimie-
rungspotenziale ausgeschöpft werden. Die Zumtobel Group
verlässt den Restrukturierungsmodus, und das soll sich
künftig auch wieder deutlicher in unserem Zahlenwerk aus­
drücken. Ab dem laufenden Geschäftsjahr 2021/2022 wird
sich der Ausblick nicht mehr auf das um Sondereffekte
bereinigte EBIT beziehen, sondern auf das EBIT, also das
operative Ergebnis der Gruppe. Der Vorstand der Zumtobel
Group sieht sich für nachhaltig profitables Wachstum gut
gewappnet und erwartet für das Geschäftsjahr 2021/2022
steigende Umsatzerlöse in einer Größenordnung von 4 %
bis 7 % sowie eine EBIT-Marge von 4 % bis 5 %.
