DEDICATION
Northwestern Visayan Colleges
Kalibo, Aklan

Make a dedication page, which encapsulates everyone you wanted to thank in the fulfilment of this portfolio in
addition to people you want to dedicate this with. (e.g. parents, relatives, etc.)
This is a sample dedication I made when I was in college.
In everything that I do, it is an honor to dedicate this student-teaching portfolio to my beloved parents

whom I am indebted with values that has brought me to where I am today. My Inay and Itay has always been

my driving force, the source of my strength, the reason for my successes and the mentor to improve my

weaknesses. Behind my achievements are two people who constantly reminded me that failing doesn’t make me

a failure, for I am more than who I think I am. I do not settle for less; I always set standards for myself because

my parents have consistently emphasized my worth as a person and as a woman. This portfolio I dedicate to

you, the reflection of what you’ve taught me as I grow up. To my anchor, Nanay and Tatay, I hope that I am

making you proud, the same way as I am proud of having you as my life’s compass.

DO NOT COPY OR PARAPHRASE THIS ONE. MAKE YOUR OWN. Anyone caught copying this will
automatically get a ZERO grade.

NOLI ME TANGERE

 Using multiple sources (Internet, books, articles, films, etc.), gather as many data as possible about
Rizal’s novel, NOLI ME TANGERE. I would love to recommend watching: Maria Clara at Ibarra, a
reimagined work of Rizal in GMA 7. 😊
 Answer the discussion questions that follow.
 I am not expecting deep answers taken from Google or related sites. What I want is your personal
understanding of the novel.

1. Crisostomo Ibarra and the mysterious and powerful Elias are quite similar, even though the former is an
immensely wealthy mestizo and the latter, an impoverished fellow who has seen better days. Both have
been victimized by the colonial system, yet have contrasting approaches to addressing the social ills that
surround them. In one pivotal scene the two debate passionately about their respective views, as though
the author were debating himself.
 How do their experiences shape these views?
 What reforms does Ibarra advocate?
 Why does Elias consider these futile?

2. Through Ibarra, Rizal the social reformer makes it clear that he believed greatly in the transformative
power of secular education. To learn only by rote prevented the ordinary Filipino from truly
understanding his situation, hence Ibarra’s proposal to build a school for the town of San Diego.
 In contrast, what was the conventional view of education in San Diego?
 Why were Padre Damaso and, later on, Padre Salvi, against such innovation?
 How did race figure in their opposition?

3. Tasio, the town sage, is elated by Ibarra’s plan for a school but immediately cautions the young man,
“The first advice I will give you is to never come to me for advice again.”
 What makes the old man say this?
 What is his reputation in San Diego and what perspective does he add to the novel?

4. The Noli is clearly anticlerical in its depiction of the friars and of the Catholic church. Padre Damaso
and, to a lesser extent, Padre Salvi, personify clerical abuses—the main cause, in the novel, of the
population’s discontent. Rizal’s portraits, however, are not one-dimensional; rather, they reveal the all-
too-human faults of each priest.
 How does the novelist individualize them? How do the failings of Damaso and Salvi propel the
novel’s action?
 The two friars have in common their feelings for Maria Clara, yet those very feelings should
divide them. Why?

5. Maria Clara betrays Ibarra even though she loves him. Her motive is to prevent the identity of her true,
biological father from being revealed.
Northwestern Visayan Colleges
Kalibo, Aklan

 Discuss the consequences of her act, and how it leads to tragedy.

6. The novel describes vividly life in the town of San Diego and its social and political hierarchy.
 If we see San Diego as a microcosm of Philippine society, what kind of portrait emerges, overall,
of life under the Spanish colonial system?
 In particular, how does the planning for the town feast clearly illustrate who holds real power?

7. Capitan Tiago and Doña Victorina de Espadaña identify completely with the colonial mind-set. In
portraying the two, Rizal pokes fun at their pretensions.
 What pretensions are these and how are they lampooned? Is Rizal gentler with one than the
other?

8. The author also mocks the mindless religiosity exhibited by Tiago and some other characters, especially
the equally wealthy spinster, Doña Patrocinio, whom Tiago considers his rival and vice versa. Each
strives to make as splashy material offerings as possible to the church, thinking thereby to ensure their
spiritual future.
 Discuss the Catholic notion of indulgences, how these ties in to lavish expenditures, and, more
broadly, how it ironically reveals the worldly nature of the church.

9. The head of the Guardia Civil and his wife, Doña Consolacion, strike fear in the hearts of San Diego’s
ordinary inhabitants. The wife is repellent, even to her husband.
 What do they exemplify and what purpose do these two characters serve in the novel?

10. Rizal depicts a gap that exists between the Spanish civil administration and clerical rule.
 How wide or narrow is that gap?
 What incidents demonstrate the differences between the two sectors?

11. Sisa goes mad due to her harsh treatment by the Guardia Civil, the death of one son, and the
disappearance of another. Critics have said that she is symbolic of the oppressed mother country.
 Do you agree with this notion?
 Are there parallels with Maria Clara and her fate and, to a lesser degree, Tiago’s?

Q AND A PORTION
RIZAL IN THE EYES OF FILIPINO YOUTH

PRESENT REALITIES
Dr. Jose Rizal is generally known to most Filipinos as the Philippines’ national hero, a genius with many
talents, who died a martyr in the hands of the Spaniards while defending the rights of his countrymen. A
constant repetition of the historical account of his life, works and writings, and martyrdom, from their
elementary days to their high school days, has made many Filipino students feel that they are already experts on
Rizalian studies and that there is nothing more to learn while taking up the mandatory Rizal course in college.
Since the young needs both novelty and depth, getting to know Dr. Rizal better through a different means
has become necessary.

 Follow the instructions and write your attach your answers in the space provided.

1. Get hold of several local or foreign newspapers/magazines.

2. Examine the pictures on the said newspapers/magazines.
3. Choose and paste a jpeg file (preferably colored) which, seemingly, is not related to Rizal but which best
reminds you of him.
4. Create an explanation consisting of at least 800 words why you have chosen the said picture.

Guide Questions:
 What do adolescents like you think of Dr. Rizal? Are these generally positive or negative.
Explain your answer.
 Is Dr. Rizal an ideal role model for the Filipino youth? Explain your answer.

Q AND A PORTION
THE MAKING OF A HERO

PRESENT REALITIES
Heroism is connected with various concepts. For historians, heroes are nationalistic persons from our past
who died while defending the Philippine sovereignty and who, at present, serve as role model among Filipinos.
For government administrators who are concerned with economic development, heroes are synonymous to
overseas contract workers who remit dollars to our country, thereby adding to our dollar reserves which are
badly needed to keep us competitive in the global market. For environmentalists, heroes are those who keep the
environment clean and green, making sure that it could still be used and enjoyed by future generations. To
ordinary Filipinos, heroes are those who simply do the right thing without ifs and buts, those who do good to
help others without asking for anything in return. Personality, nowadays is often related with an individual’s
physical bearing and ability to deal with others with grace. Personality development ads, which appear on
leading newspapers, promise that after their offered short-term course, their clients will surely have a better
personality because of improved communication and work skills, knowledge of correct etiquette in everyday
activities, and better dress and make-up sense, forgetting that there are more to personality development than
these mentioned elements. One’s personality reflects one’s outlook in life, attitude and behavior. Thus, one’s
decision-making styles and practice depend upon his/her personality.

 Follow the instructions and write your attach your answers in the space provided. (You may create
additional pages to elaborate your answers.)

1. Give five different definitions of the term “hero”.

2. Give five different definitions of the term “personality”.
3. Enumerate and discuss the different factors which influence the development of an individual’s
personality.
4. Give at least two specific examples of the different factors which have influenced the shaping of Dr.
Jose Rizal’s heroic personality.
5. Describe your own personality.
6. If the ideal Filipino citizen is described to be socially concerned, productive, morally upright, and
patriotic like our national hero, how would you rate yourself in a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 as the lowest
and 10 as the highest?
7. Do you see a need to improve your personality? Explain your answer.
8. Which factors in personality development are within your control? Elaborate your answers.

Q AND A PORTION
RIZAL: A FULLY FUNCTIONING PERSON

PRESENT REALITIES
Graft and corruption, disrespect for people’s rights, inefficiency of workers, lack of concern for the
environment, drug abuse and different types of crimes, among others, are only a few examples of existing
problematic situations in the Philippines at present. These may also indicate that many Filipinos at present are
not fully functioning as human beings and are not acting or behaving as they should. Negative biological,
psychological, social, material, cultural, and also geographical influences have caused them to become persons
with unhealthy personalities who have no qualms about displaying anti-social acts. This is because a person
with an unhealthy personality tends to be self-centered; her or his main concern is his/her welfare only.
Many institutions like the family, school, government and the church have failed to develop many of their
members or constituents holistically in the dimensions of the human growth and development: physically,
intellectually, psychologically, emotionally, socially, morally, and spiritually.
Psychologists and social scientists believe that development of social concern and service orientation which
results from an individual’s full development is enhanced if he or she has a healthy and normal personality
supported by a positive self-concept and sound values, both of which are within the realms of psychological and
mental health.

Activity
 Follow the instructions and write your attach your answers in the space provided. (You may create
additional pages to elaborate your answers.)

1. Research and define the terms fully functioning person and healthy personality.
2. Enumerate and explain the characteristics of a fully functioning person.
3. Compare a person with a healthy personality and a person with an unhealthy personality.
4. Compare Dr. Rizal’s characteristics with a fully a functioning person. Did he have a healthy
personality? Explain and support your answers with specific examples.
5. What are the beneficial effects if majority of Filipino citizens will be able to develop a healthy
personality?

Q AND A PORTION
RIZALIAN TRAITS AND VIRTUES

PRESENT REALITIES
Rizalian traits and virtues are considered by a good number of the current young and middle-aged Filipinos
as “old-fashioned”. They usually associate these with nerds or with the “all-work, no-play” type of people. For
them, their ideal person is described as “tunay na lalaki” or “matcho”, “walang inuurungan”, “maabilidad” and
as a song goes, “maginoo pero medyo bastos”. It is really quite different to try to be like Rizal in a period and
society with different standards. People tend to look askance at anyone who tries to do anything heroic or who
declares that he wants to be like Rizal. Revisiting the traits and virtues of Dr. Rizal is therefore recommended
for the Filipino youth in order to rekindle the latent patriotism within them. Being like Rizal is an act which
requires brains, determination, courage to be different, and most of all, a lot of heart. Although the country is no
longer under foreign rule or dictatorship, Filipinos still have to be Rizal-like in order to progress as a nation.
Corruption, human rights violations, poor quality of education, lawlessness in some parts of the country,
oppression of the poor and the marginalized members of society, and others must be remedied if the Philippines
wants to improve its third-world country statues. Only individuals with Rizal’s traits and virtues could pull this
country out of this quagmire.

Activity
 Follow the instructions and write your attach your answers in the space provided. (You may create
additional pages to elaborate your answers.)

Q AND A PORTION
SYNERGY

PRESENT REALITIES
Crab mentality or the tendency to pull down fellow Filipinos who have come successful is
another self-defeating practice of a big number of our countrymen. They badmouth and
discourage these successful Filipinos instead of showing support for their good fortune and
achievements. Inggit or envy and the lack of involved unity among our people are possible
reasons for such a tendency, and these lead to alienation from others and a strong inclination to
refuse to refuse to synergize them. Lack of trust felt by radical activists for the motives of first-
world countries in associating with us could also be a possible explanation by the rally and
demonstrate against the Philippine government’s efforts to synergize with the United States.
We, Filipinos, must accept that more can actually be accomplished if we synergize with
others as individuals and with the global community as a nation.

Activity
 Follow the instructions and write your attach your answers in the space provided. (You
may create additional pages to elaborate your answers.)

1. What do you understand by the term synergy?

2. Did Dr. Rizal practice synergy in doing things? Give proofs/evidences to support your
answer.
3. How can appreciating differences or diversity among individuals and among nations
bring about synergy among them? Explain your answer.
4. How can synergizing with other individuals and with other countries bring about social
and economic progress. Explain your answers.
5. What are the effects of globalization? Which could possibly bring about synergy among
nations? Explain your answers.
