History of Basketball
James Naismith invented basketball. He was born in
Ontario, Canada, on Nov 6, 1861. When he was 30
years old, Mr. Naismith moved to the United States to
become a physical education teacher at the YMCA in
Springfield, Massachusetts.

During the brutally cold winters, Mr. Naismith

noticed that his kids were restless and bored. As
part of its efforts to help athletes stay fit and
occupied during the colder months, the YMCA
asked him to design a new indoor sport to help keep
athletes entertained.
History of Basketball

Basketball was born when he merged the most

popular sports at the time - rugby, lacrosse, soccer,
baseball, and football - in an attempt to take the best
features from them all. The first organized game of
"basket ball" was played on Dec 21, 1891 after he
pinned up his 13 rules for the game in his Springfield
gym.

Players tosses the ball between themselves and had

to throw it through the peach basket of their
opposing team to score. No dribbling was allowed,
and the ball was only moved by passing it between
teammates.

BASIC SKILLS
Dribbling is the process by which a player has to move the
basketball around the court. During this process, the ball is
continuously bounced back and forth between a player's
hands and the ground. A player cannot walk around the court
holding the ball, or this will be deemed a traveling violation.

Shooting a basketball involves the most specific technique of

any of the five basic skills and also may require the most
practice to master this skill. It is the main skill that directly
involves scoring.points. Whether a player shoots a layup,
mid-range shot, or a three-pointer, it is all- encompassed in
the idea of shooting or scoring the basketball.

Passing isthe other option to move the ball around the court
outside or dribbling. When a team has g0od passers, they
can create easy scoring opportunities for their teammates.
While great passers may not be scoring the most points in a
specific game, they are nonetheless valuable.
Defending takes a great deal of effort and
athleticism since the goal is to prevent the
other team from scoring as often as possible.
Without the right defense, a team will never
win basketball games, making it an essential
skill to learn.

Rebounding is the process of controling missed

shots on both the offensive and defensive ends.
Rebounding is a key facet of acquiring and
maintaining possession, which can subsequently
give your team more offensive chances.
Securing the most missed shots leads to more
offensive opportunities and generally allows a
team to score more points.

OFFICIATING
OFFICIALS
There are three on-court officials assigned to each NBA game. Each
official has a different title and set of responsibilities. These three are
referred to as the crew chief, referee, and umpire.

Referee
Officials that occupy the referee position
primarily handle conduct violations. While
referees are well-equipped to call contact fouls
and illegal positioning, they are mostly relied
upon to settle disputes and hand out technical
fouls if a player or coach loses control of their
emotions and behaves poorly.
Crew Chief
As the name implies, the crew chief is the head of the
entire officiating crew. Duties include making a final
ruling when other officials disagree and maintaining
a strong line of communication with coaches, scorers,
and statisticians.

Umpire Umpires handle the clock (making sure the timer

knows when to pause and restart the game clock due to a
stoppage in play) and basic foul calls. For example, the
umpire will likely be the official to hand down a ruling
when a defensive player makes contact with an opposing
shooter.
