Lab experiment - 1

Name: George Mathew

Reg. No.: 20BRS1176
Subject: drone appls, components & assembly
Subject code: CSE2040
Professor: Dr. V Muthumanikandan
Slot: L43+L44
Components of a drone:

1. Drone frame: the drone frame is the most important part of the drone, it
is basically the skeleton of the drone. It helps in mounting the motors,
battery, camera, GPS and other parts to the drone. We should choose a
frame that is light weight but also very strong. The best drone frames are
made of carbon fibre.

2. Motors: the drone needs to be thrust in the air, and hence we need to use
some lightweight powerful motors. We will need 4 A2212/1000Kv
Brushless DC Motors(BLDC)
3. Propellors: we need to choose the correct type of propellors, the
propellors need to also be lightweight and strong. We will be using 2
pairs of 1045 propellors.

4. Speed controller: we cannot control the speed of the motors without the
speed controller, the speed controller helps us to change the voltage and
current of the motor. These speed controllers are called as ESC
(electronic speed controller). We will need 4 ESCs.

5. Flight control board: this is the most important part of the drone. The
flight controller is the brain of a drone. A small box filled with intelligent
electronics and software, which monitors and controls everything the
drone does. We will be using the Pixhawk flight controller, it is an
independent open-hardware project providing low cost high end autopilot
designs for the drone.
6. Radio transmitter and receiver: the transmitter sends a signal to the
receiver and the receiver receives the signal and performs the task
according the command from the transmitter. The transmitter looks like a
remote and is controlled by the drone pilot and the receiver is connected
to the drone. This receiver sends signals to the Pixhawk.

7. Battery: Lithium polymer (LiPo) batteries are among the most common
battery types used for drones because they offer the advantage of high
energy density in relation to their size and weight, with a higher voltage
per cell, so they can power the drone's on-board systems with fewer cells.
We need to select the battery according the drone specifications.
8. Power distribution board: this board allows the drone to get the proper
current and draw a perfect voltage.

9. ESP8266: The ESP8266 WiFi Module is a self contained SOC with

integrated TCP/IP protocol stack that can give any microcontroller access
to your WiFi network. The ESP8266 is capable of either hosting an
application or offloading all Wi-Fi networking functions from another
application processor. t has the capability for 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, which is
802.11 b/g/n. It supports WPA and WPA2. It is a system-on-chip
integrated with a 32-bit processor which runs 80 MHz.

10. M8N GPS: is a new generation NEO-M8N High Precision GPS Module
with Built-in Compass for PIXHAWK and APM FC (Ready to connect to
PIXHAWK FC) with onboard Compass, low power consumption, and
high precision.
11. GPS holder: this component will help in holding the GPS module in
place.

12. Connectors and cables: Connectors are the most important part for the
power supply and transmission within the drone. If the connections or
lose or they are cut, then the drone will stop working. We need to have
connectors for connecting the batteries, motors, ESCs, flight controller,
gps, Wifi module, etc.
