considered for a pass in this course, you must achieve a minimum of 40 out of 100 in
this examination.
Question 1 (4 + 6 = 10 Marks)

(a) Determine the value(s) of k such that the system of linear equations
(k  3) x  y  0
x  (k  3) y  0
has infinitely many solutions.

(b) Determine the polynomial function whose graph passes through the points
(1,3), (0,0), (1,1), (4,58) .

Question 2 ((5 + 4 + 7) + 4 = 20 Marks)

(a) Consider the system of linear equations

2𝑥 + 3𝑦 + 𝑧 = 32
3𝑥 + 3𝑦 + 𝑧 = −27
2𝑥 + 4𝑦 + 𝑧 = −2.
(i) Find the inverse of the coefficient matrix.
(ii) Solve the above system of linear equations using the inverse of the coefficient matrix
found in part (i).
(iii) Find the LU -factorization of the coefficient matrix.

(b) Use Cramer’s rule to solve the given system.

x1  2 x 2  10
x1  2 x 2  6

Question 3 (7 + 3 + (2 + 3 + 3 +2) = 20 Marks)

(a) Find the eigenvalues and the corresponding eigenvectors of the following matrix:

 

(b) Determine whether the points (0,0,1), (0,1,0), (1,1,0), (2,1,2) are coplanar.

(c) Consider the following matrices:

−1 0 0
2 −1 2 −3 1 −3 4
𝐴=[ ], 𝐵=[ ], 𝐶=[ ], 𝐷 = [ 3 4 0].
3 0 −1 4 −5 −2 6

(ii) lim (√𝑥 2 + 1 − 𝑥)
𝑥→∞

(b) Find the domain of the function 𝑓(𝑥) = ln(𝑥 − 2).

Question 5 (5 + (3 + 3) + (3 + 3 + 2) + 5 = 24 Marks)

(iii)Determine the point of inflection of 𝑓(𝑥).

(d) An apple farm yields an average of 30 bushels of apples per tree when 20 trees are planted on
an acre of ground. Each time one more tree is planted per acre, the yield decreases by one
bushel per tree due to the extra congestion. How many trees should be planted in order to get
the highest yield per acre?
