INTERVIEW QUESTIONS FOR FOCUS GROUP DISCUSSIONS.

FGD considerations:
 Participants should not exceed 8-10 individuals
 Individuals should be selected from different households in located area
 Ensure to hold separate FGDs with different populations (marginalized groups, those
that live close to facilities, far from facilities, different religious groups, gender
identities etc.)
 Each group should have age diversity within
 Ensure to have proper introduction that states the objective and confidentiality and
closing by thanking and allowing participants to ask any questions they may have.
Now, I would like to ask several questions about what mental health means in the community,
its impact and how the community describes mental health problems.
1. How do you describe a person with mental health problems in your community.
2. What are the problems caused by mental health related issues in your community?
3. Where do you send people with mental health problems for treatment?
4. How do people in your community cope with stressful situations?
Now, I would like to ask several questions about suicide, messaging on mental health topics
and the activities available in the community with promote mental wellbeing and peaceful
coexistence with the host community.
5. Have you heard of people who think or talk about ending their lives in your community?
if yes Where does the community take them for help?
6. Have you heard of mental health related messages in your community? If yes what was
the message about?
7. What roles do religious leaders and community leaders play in the treatment of mental
health problems?
8. What roles do traditional healers play in the treatment of mental health problems?
9. How does lack of livelihood activities affect the mental health wellbeing of the
community?
10. What activities promote peaceful coexistence between refugees and host community?
11. What community structures are available & accessible in the community to promote
Mental health wellbeing.
