Treatment procedure

The treatment procedure for electric shock:

Step 1: Separate the person from the source of electricity
Eliminate the source of electricity
 Turn off the source of electricity by unplugging wires or turn off
circuit breaker.
If you cannot turn off the electricity
 Ensure you are standing on a non-conductive material such as
cardboard, plastic, glass rubber or wood.

 Try to move the source away from you and the person, using a
dry, non conducting object made of cardboard, plastic or wood.

If high voltage lines are involved

 Inform the local supplier of electricity so they can shut down the
lines. Step 2: Do CPR (only if necessary)
When you can safely handle the person, begin CPR if the person shows no
signs of circulation, such as breathing, coughing or movement.
 If the person is an adult, perform CPR suitable for an
adult.  If the person is a child, perform CPR suitable
for a child.
Step 3: Check for other injuries and apply first aid accordingly
Depending on the severity of the electric shock the person may have
injuries such as:
 Broken bones if the electric shock caused the person
to fall.  Burns and bruises.
Step 4: Call 911 and wait for the medical assistance to arrive
Step 5: Follow up
 A doctor will check the person for burns, bruises, fractures and
other injuries.
 The person might be admitted to the hospital.
The treatment procedure for an eye injury:
For chemical exposure

 Don't rub eyes.

 Immediately wash out the eye with lots of water. Use whatever is
closest -- water fountain, shower, garden hose.
 Get medical help while you are doing this, or after 15 to 20
minutes of continuous flushing
 Don't bandage the eye.

For a blow to the eye

 Apply a cold compress, but don't put pressure on the eye.

 Take over-the-counter acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil,
Motrin) for pain.
 If there is bruising, bleeding, change in vision, or it hurts when your
eye moves, see a doctor right away.

For a foreign particle in eye

 Don't rub the eye.

 Pull the upper lid down and blink repeatedly.
 If particle is still there, rinse with eyewash.
 If rinsing doesn't help, close eye, bandage it lightly, and see a doctor.
The treatment procedure for bleeding:

Step 1: Stop bleeding

To stop bleeding

 Apply direct pressure on the cut or wound with a clean cloth, tissue, or
piece of gauze until bleeding stops.
 If blood soaks through the material, don’t remove it. Put more cloth or
gauze on top of it and continue to apply pressure.
 If the wound is on the arm or leg, raise limb above the heart, if
possible, to help slow bleeding.
 Wash your hands again after giving first aid and before cleaning and
dressing the wound.
 Do not apply a tourniquet unless the bleeding is severe and not
stopped with direct pressure.

Step 2: Clean cut or wound

 Gently clean with soap and warm water. Try to rinse soap out of
wound to prevent irritation.
 Don’t use hydrogen peroxide or iodine, which can damage

tissue. Step 3: Protect the wound

 Apply antibiotic cream to reduce risk of infection and cover with a

sterile bandage.
 Change the bandage daily to keep the wound clean
and dry. END OF LESSON
