3.0 LITERATURE REVIEW

3.1 EXCAVATION

Excavation is the process of moving earth, rock or other materials with tools,
equipment or explosives. It also includes trenching, wall shafts, tunnelling and
underground. It is the preliminary activity of the construction project.

Quality Checks for Excavation:

1. Recording initial ground level and check size of bottom.

2. Disposal of unsuitable material for filling.
3. Stacking suitable material for backfilling to avoid double handling.
4. Strata classification approval by competent authority.
5. Dressing bottom and sides of pits as per drawing with respect to
centerline.
6. Necessary safety measures observed.

FIGURE 3.1: Excavation Work

3.2 RUBBLE SOLING

Rubble soling is the procedure of laying hard stones of required specifications

adjacent to one another, with minimal voids in between them. The gaps are filled
with stone chips or moorum to firmly pack the soling as required.

GUJARAT TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY Page |

INTERNSHIP IN THE CUBE CONSTRUCTION ENGINEERING LTD.

The stones used in rubble soling are typically irregularly shaped and may range
in size from a few inches to several feet. The stones are carefully placed and
packed tightly together to create a solid, level surface.

Why we provide rubble soling in the construction works:

a) To provide a hard & firm base or sub-base for the upper structural layers.
b) To increase the bearing capacity of the soil or strata.
c) To provide a leveled base above the undulated strata for PCC or any such
works.

FIGURE 3.2: Rubble Soling

At my site, used 300mm thick layer of Rubble soling.

3.3 P.C.C. WORK

Plain cement concrete is the mixture of cement, fine aggregate (sand) and coarse
aggregate without steel. PCC is an important component of a building which is
laid on the soil surface to avoid direct contact of reinforcement of concrete with
soil and water.

Materials used in Plain Cement Concrete are Cement, Coarse Aggregate, and
Fine Sand & Water.

At my site, used the M7.5, M15, M20 grade of P.C.C. work.

3.4 KOTA STONE

Kota stone is a type of natural stone that is quarried in the Kota district of
Rajasthan, India. It is a fine-grained, high-density limestone that is known for its
durability, strength, and attractive appearance. Kota stone is often used in
flooring, wall cladding, and exterior paving due to its natural beauty and
resistance to wear and tear.

FIGURE 3.4: Kota Stone

GUJARAT TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY Page |

INTERNSHIP IN THE CUBE CONSTRUCTION ENGINEERING LTD.

The stone has a uniform texture and can be cut into different sizes and shapes,
making it suitable for various construction applications. The stone is also
weather-resistant and has good thermal conductivity, which makes it ideal for use
in hot and humid regions.

Kota stone is an eco-friendly and sustainable building material, as it is a natural

product that requires minimal processing and energy consumption.

At my site, used the 25mm thick kota stone having the size of 600×600mm kota
with the water-proofing agent in the slury.

3.5 RAFT FOUNDATION

The raft foundation is a continuous slab that covers the entire area of the building
and is supported by a reinforced concrete slab. The slab transfers the load of the
building to the soil over a larger area, reducing the stress on the soil and
preventing the structure from sinking or settling unevenly.

FIGURE 3.5: Raft Foundation

Raft foundation is a type of foundation used in buildings to support heavy loads,

where the soil bearing capacity is insufficient for conventional spread footings or
strip footings. It is also known as mat foundation.

GUJARAT TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY Page |

INTERNSHIP IN THE CUBE CONSTRUCTION ENGINEERING LTD.

Raft foundation is generally used to support structures like residential or

commercial buildings where soil condition is poor, storage tanks, silos,
foundations for heavy industrial equipment etc.

At my site, depth of Raft Foundation is 850mm having the total 7 layer of

reinforcement of different size of diameter.

3.6 CASE STUDIES:

3.6.1 DEEP EXCAVATION IN AN URBAN AREA:

Mohammad Sharif Rajabi Geotechnical Engineer, University of Tehran Tehran-

Iran)

Farzin Kalantary (Assistant Professor, K.N.Toosi University of Technology

Tehran-Iran)

Soil nailing or anchoring system is a good method for stabilizing excavation

especially when blend with soldier pile system. In this project usage of this
stabilizing system improved excavation resistance for failing. Wall movements
were less than the limiting values set for the projects at all monitoring points, and
the wall movements were acceptable. This limitation of movement is contributed
to favourable soil conditions over most of the site, high quality construction, and
the exceptional quality control and quality assurance measures instituted by the
field engineers.

The wall had been designed for 19m depth at first. But after reaching to -19.00
meter depth, the landlord decided to increase the depth of excavation up to -
20.00 meter. By the use of nailing and anchoring method and because of such a
flexible method, it was possible to extend the excavation.

3.6.2 HISTORY OF RAFT FOUNDATION BEHAVIOR FOR A LARGE-

SCALED BUILDING COMPLEX:

M.Aoki and M. Maruoka (Research Engineers, Takenaka Corporation, Technical

Research Laboratory, Tokyo, Japan):

GUJARAT TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY Page |

INTERNSHIP IN THE CUBE CONSTRUCTION ENGINEERING LTD.

This case study describes the field observation of settlement of a raft foundation
for a large-scale building complex in Nagoya city in Japan. The complex consists
of a 28 story hotel, a 15 story office building and a low-storied banquet hall in the
middle all of which are supported on a single 80 m square basement on raft
foundation. Since the load on the foundation is non-uniform, the differential
settlement of the foundation was investigated analytically, taking into
consideration the interaction between the ground and the raft. To confirm the
validity of the design, measurements were conducted for about 2 years during the
building construction. The maximum ground heave caused by the excavation was
42 mm and the maximum settlement caused by the building construction was 28
mm. The changes in the elastic modulus of the ground agree well with a
decrease ratio which in turn is evaluated based on a decrease of the mean
principal stress caused by excavation and a decrease of ground rigidity caused
by shear strain. The measured distribution of the displacement and stress are in
relatively good agreement with the results of an analysis which incorporates the
interaction of the building frame and the soil.

5.0 SUMMARY

This internship includes the construction process of various building components

and different materials used in construction. Any building construction begins with
excavation. In excavation work, work is carried out using the Excavator machine.
Maintaining the Reduced Level (R.L.) as per given Plan. Then compacting the
soil and make the surface level smooth; and then starts the work of Rubble
soling. The rubble layer is then bound together using fine aggregates. Then
P.C.C. work is done on the rubble soling. On the P.C.C., Kota stone work is
carried out. Kota stone is done for the water-proofing purpose. After completing
kota stone work, Raft foundation work is start. In raft foundation work marking of
wall and raft is carried out using total station machine. Then reinforcement bars
are laid out on the kota stone layer.
