INTRODUCTION

“A good poem is a contribution to reality. The world is never the same once a good
poem has been added to it. A good poem helps to change the shape of the universe, helps
to extend everyone’s knowledge of himself and the world around him.” Thomas D., (2018).
For centuries, poems have been used to capture the essence of the human experience, to
tell stories, and to shed light on the complexities of life. In this essay, we will explore the
importance of poems and how they continue to shape our understanding of the world around
us. From their role in preserving cultural heritage to their ability to evoke empathy and
understanding, poems serve as a crucial tool for self-expression and communication.
“Today, poetry remains an important part of art and culture. From Shakespearean sonnets to
Maya Angelou’s reflective compositions, poems are long-lived, read and recited for
generations.” Collins B., (2022).

In this paper, the writings of one of the famous American poet, Emily Dickinson who
lived from 1830 to 1886 will be observed. She is considered one of the most important
figures in American poetry and is known for her unique writing style, which combined
traditional forms with experimental language and imagery. She was largely unknown during
her lifetime, and only a handful of her poems were published. As she stated on one of her
works, “If I read a book and it makes my whole body so cold no fire can ever warm me, I
know that is poetry.” Dickinson, E., (1830). The speaker uses this as a way of defining
poetry, indicating that she believes that the emotional impact is a key characteristic in
making an effective writing.

Moving along, to cover the literature texts that will be discussed, the following are the
objectives of this paper: Identify the themes that centralizes in each poem; recognize the
different figures of speech that is being used; and create a detailed explanation about the
common grounds of the writing style that is being portrayed all throughout the given poems
of Emily Dickinson.
