On The Road For Business? Corporate Housing
Can Provide The Comforts Of Home
(ARA) - Megan Torrance of Sarasota,
Fla., loved life as a consultant despite
being on the road four to fve days
each week for months on end.
I enjoyed traveling for business. I
could get a ton of work done without
the distractions of being home, she
says, Plus, Im from a small town, so
being in a big city like Chicago was
pretty cool.
Rather than staying in an extended
stay hotel, Torrances company placed
her in a furnished apartment known as
corporate housing.
Corporate housing is defned as a fur-
nished residential apartment, house or
condominium made available for rent
on a temporary basis, primarily for
30 days or more. Corporate housing
is typically located within residential
communities and includes furniture,
a full kitchen, a private bath, linens,
house wares, electronics and utilities.
Adam Sherer, president of the Corpo-
rate Housing Providers Association
(CHPA) (www.chpaonline.org/), the
professional association for the corpo-
rate housing industry, says a corporate
rental is like a home away from home.

People can move right into a corpo-
rate apartment. The utilities are on, the
dishes are stacked neatly in the cabi-
nets, the towels are ready for use, and
the beds are ready to go, says Sherer.
Phone service and high-speed Internet
are generally included as well.
The Highland Group, an independent
hospitality research frm, estimates
that corporate housing is a $2.4 billion
dollar industry and more than 60,000
people on any given night could be
staying in a furnished apartment. The
research frm also reports that corpo-
rate housing comprises about 24 per-
cent of occupied units in the extended
Page 6
Page 7
stay industry.
The benefts of corporate housing
Sherer says one of the top benefts of
corporate housing is truly living in the
host city rather than simply visiting.
Visitors can live in a residential
neighborhood, go to a local farmers
markets and then prepare the food
in their kitchen that night. Corporate
housing is appealing to anyone who
wants to make the most of their trav-
els, he says.
Another bonus to corporate housing,
adds Torrance, is that you have a place
to leave your clothes and essentials
when you return home for the week-
ends.
I loved that I didnt have to schlep
my stuff on an airplane every week;
rather I securely stored my clothes and
essentials in my corporate apartment
and only traveled back and forth with
a carry-on bag for the weekends, she
says.
She adds that another beneft is the
ability to eat healthy, like she normally
would at home.
I put on a lot of weight living in ho-
tels over the years. Small hotel rooms
do not encourage a healthy lifestyle,
she says.
Dan Nainan, a Los Angeles comedian/
actor, says he, too, prefers corporate
rentals over hotels. He lived in corpo-
rate housing for nearly two years as a
consultant and most recently stayed
in a corporate rental in Philadelphia
while flming The Last Airbender,
the latest movie from M. Night Shya-
malan.
I also stayed in temporary furnished
housing when I frst moved to Los An-
geles, he says, I had a chance to get
to know the city as more of a resident
instead of just as a tourist.
Corporate housing not just for execu-
tives
Martha Greenlee, the director of mar-
keting and PR for a real estate com-
pany in Miami, says corporate housing
helped her father, who was fghting
pancreatic cancer, fnd comfort while
undergoing treatment at a medical fa-
cility 750 miles away from his Florida
home.
Corporate housing is the most com-
fortable option for someone with a
very serious illness. It made all the dif-
ference in the world to my father and
family, she says. I recall the time
[in corporate housing] as particularly
wonderful, despite the diffcult cir-
cumstances. My father was even able
to bring his dog. It felt like home.
Mary Ann Passi, executive director
for CHPA, contends that people dont
need to put their lives on hold when
traveling.
Long-term stays can take a toll on a
travelers psyche - especially living in
a transient environment, Passi says.
Having a corporate apartment affords
the guest more space, more comfort,
more peace and quiet, and more pos-
sibilities. Its the savvy way to travel
for extended periods of time.

Life Insurance FYI For Generation Y
(ARA) - If you were born between
1979 and 1994, you may have heard
yourself described as part of Gen-
eration Y. Characteristics that defne
your generation include a tendency to
be independent, opinionated and well
informed - good qualities to be sure.
A 2010 study by Prudential, Reach-
ing Gen Y - easier than you think,
suggests that one area where you
might beneft from more knowledge
is in the area of life in-
surance. Those younger
than 40 often give little
thought to life insurance
products early on, as they
are more inclined to wait
until they reach specifc
life stages.
What you may not know,
is that the best time to
buy any type of life in-
surance is when you are
young and healthy, since
the cost increases as you
age. Life insurance pre-
miums are also based on
your health at the time of
application, so waiting
until mid-life maladies
kick in may not make
good fnancial sense.
Starting research early for any ma-
jor life purchase is key, especially
life insurance, says Joan Cleveland,
senior vice president of Business De-
velopment for Prudentials Individual
Life Insurance business. And when
analyzing products, speaking with a
qualifed fnancial professional is a
great way to end up with a smart and
informed decision.
Selecting the right product and cover-
age
According to the study, millennials are
known to do a lot of comparison shop-
ping online - fnancial services are no
exception. Figuring out what products
and services ft your needs is always
the frst step to purchasing life insur-
ance. Before you get started, a basic
understanding of the differences be-
tween types of life insurance is help-
ful:
Term life insurance: Like its name
implies, term life insurance provides
coverage for a specifed term or
period of time. It is usually less ex-
pensive than permanent insurance,
especially in the early years of the pol-
icy. It typically does not offer potential
for cash value accumulation. Rather, it
typically provides a death beneft for a
limited amount of time.
Advantages:
* Term insurance generally provides
more death beneft for the same dollar
than permanent insurance.
* It is a good choice if you want or
need to maximize the amount of cov-
erage you can purchase for a lower
premium outlay.
* It is also appropriate to cover needs
that exist for a limited period of time,
such as college tuition or a mortgage.
Disadvantages:
* At the end of the specifed period,
your death beneft either expires or the
premium increases dramatically.
* If you want to keep coverage without
paying the higher premiums, youll
likely have to purchase a new policy
at your current age and health status,
which will result in higher costs.
Permanent life insurance: Permanent
life insurance is designed to provide
coverage for your entire life. Premi-

ums are typically due for the life of the
policy. In addition to providing a death
beneft, permanent policies are usually
designed to accumulate cash value.
Advantages:
* As long as premiums are paid when
due and other contractual conditions
are met, permanent life insurance re-
mains in effect over the course of your
life, even if your health declines.
* Since age and medical condition are
two of the major factors used in un-
derwriting life insurance, purchasing
permanent life insurance when you are
younger and healthy will provide you
with lower premiums.
* Buying permanent insurance now
ensures you have coverage later, even
if a future medical condition makes
you ineligible to buy life insurance.
* Cash value that may accumulate in
the policy can be accessed later, usu-
ally on a tax-favored basis, through
withdrawals and/or loans to fund vari-
ous needs.
Disadvantages:
* Because you have coverage for life,
the premiums are higher compared to
the initial premium for term insurance.
* Loans and withdrawals will reduce
policy cash values and the death ben-
eft and may have tax consequences.
Enjoying the best of both worlds
In many cases, having a combination
of term and permanent coverage is the
right choice and the best way to help
meet your fnancial protection needs,
says Cleveland. But, ultimately, you
should educate yourself and then
make a list of questions or concerns
you have so you come to the table pre-
pared to learn how life insurance can
help secure your fnancial future.
All guarantees are based on the claims
paying ability of the issuer. Policies
may contain exclusions, limitations,
reductions of benefts and terms for
keeping them in force. A fnancial pro-
fessional can provide you with costs
and complete details.

What You Need To Know To Prepare For Natural Disasters
(ARA) - When most people think of
disaster striking their homes, they
think of the things they would lose.
The most important question is:
What should we save, says Lyman
Munson, head of risk services at Fire-
mans Fund Insurance. Theres an
easy answer to that query: When di-
saster strikes, family comes frst.
Whether its a wildfre, hurricane, tor-
nado, food or another natural disaster
altogether, your family should know
what to do when in danger. Follow
this list of simple disaster prepared-
ness tips that will help your family
stay safe.
Evacuation plan: Your family
should have a practiced, effec-
tive evacuation plan agreed
upon beforehand so that youre
ready to go when the unexpect-
ed hits. Make sure each room in
your home has at least two exits
and that each member of your
household is clear on the easi-
est way to evacuate your home.
If you have a multi-level home,
be sure to have an escape plan
from upper stories. It is recom-
mended to keep a collapsible fre lad-
der next to your upper-level windows
for easy exit through the window.
Make a list: With your family mem-
bers, make a list of important things
that you would want to take with you
in case of an evacuation. This list
could include things like medicine,
eyeglasses and important documents.
Keep these things in a safe, easy-to-
reach place.
Emergency supply kit: Put together a
kit of basic survival supplies to pro-
vide for your family in case of evacu-
ation or isolation. In addition to basic
survival supplies, be sure to include
some items to cheer up your family
like books, candy or toys.
Keep a home inventory: Pick up a
video recorder or a digital camera and
walk around each room of your house
documenting your belongings. This is
an important and time-saving step and
will be useful if fling insurance claims
after a disaster. Store your documenta-
tion on a password protected site on-
line where you can access it away from
your home. The Insurance Information
Institute also makes www.knowyour-
stuff.org available free of charge.
Keep your insurance information
handy: Store information about your
insurance policy and insurance agent
in your mobile phone or online (or
both) so that you will be able to access
it from outside your home. This infor-
mation, along with a detailed home in-
ventory will be important when deal-
ing with the after effects and losses of
a natural disaster.
Here are some ideas for preparing
your family for specifc natural disas-
ters that affect different parts of the
country:
Hurricanes
Protecting all your windows and doors
is the No. 1 way you can protect your
home from hurricane damage. Make
sure your windows and doors have
proper approvals for large-missile im-
pact and wind pressure.
Keeping your roof in good condition
is an important way to protect yourself
from leaks and other forms of damage.
Edge shingles should be well fastened
and should not extend beyond the drip
edge more than 1/4 inch. Secure old,
brittle or loose shingles with three 1
inch dabs of roofng cement un-
der each tab.
Wildfres
Zoned, fre-resistant landscap-
ing can help reduce your risk of
wildfre. Check with your local
fre department or nursery for
a list of fre-resistant plants to
grow in your yard.
Choose heat-resistant such as
cement, plaster, stucco or con-
crete masonry for the walls of
your home. Flame-resistant walls will
help contain fres and decrease the
probability that a fre will spread to the
rest of the house.
Tornadoes
If you are replacing your existing win-
dows, install impact-resistant window
systems, which have a much better
chance of surviving a major wind-
storm. If you are unable to fnd them
locally, you can order them from
manufacturers or home improvement
stores in coastal areas.

Make sure you have sturdy hinges and
a deadbolt security lock with a bolt 1
inch long on your doors. Door frames
should be anchored securely to wall
framing.
Earthquakes
Install latches on cupboard doors to
ensure they dont open during a quake.
Do not put heavy artwork, mirrors or
shelves over beds. Store heavy items
or glassware in lower cabinets so they
do not become dangerous during a
quake.
Floods
Place your valuables above the foor
level of your home. Avoid stacking
your boxes on the foor level in case
boxes become damaged and collapse.
Use landscaping, site grading and the
location of drains and sewers to con-
trol and contain the direction and fow
of excess water in case of a food. In-
stall sump pumps with a back-up gen-
erator (in case of electricity failure)
to quickly remove water from your
home.
