OBJECTIVE
Explain physical changes in terms
of the arrangement and motion of
atoms and molecules.
Physical
Changes
Matter can change
from one state to
another without a
change in chemical
composition. This
physical change is
called Phase Change.
Changes in physical
state from solid to
liquid and to gas or
vice versa are
common.
SUBLIMATION
SUBLIMATION
❑ Some substances
change from solid
to gas without
passing through the
liquid state. This
change is called
sublimation.
❑ For a solid to sublime, individual particles on the
surface of the solid obtain enough energy from their
surroundings to jump off the surface of the solid
and become individual gas particles.

DEPOSITION
DEPOSITION
❑ A reverse reaction in
which a gas changes
directly to solid
without passing
through the liquid
state also happens
and this is called
deposition.
DEPOSITION
❑ The gaseous substance
gets deposited (usually
as crystals) bypassing
the intermediate liquid
state. An example of
deposition is when
water vapor in the
atmosphere changes
directly into ice, such as
the formation of frost.
