Hello everyone, My name is Faith Melissa Joy E.

Delos Santos and today I will discuss partial melting of

magma.

Do you guys have any idea what is partial melting? Coming from the word melting? Okay.

- Partial melting is the transformation of some fraction of the mass of a solid rock into a liquid
as a result of decompression, heat input, or addition of a flux. The resulting liquid is called
magma and becomes lava if it erupts from a volcano.

(sabi ditto, Ang bahagyang pagkatunaw ay ang pagbabago ng ilang bahagi ng mass ng solid rock into

liquid. As a result decompression, pagpasok ng init, o pagdaragdag ng isang flux. Ang result ng liquid ay

tinatawag na magma at nagiging lava kung ito ay nag erupts from a volcano.)

- The understanding that partial, rather than complete, melting is the norm in natural systems is
essential to appreciating the geochemical importance of melting in the Earth and planets. During
partial melting, the liquid differs from the source rock and from coexisting residual minerals in
composition and in physical properties such as density and viscosity. The low viscosity, low
density (usually), and interconnected texture of the liquid during partial melting allow the melt
to migrate from the source and thereby trigger physical phenomena like volcanism as well as
chemical segregation...

(for better understanding, sa halip na kumpleto, ang pagtunaw ay ang pamantayan sa mga natural na
Sistema. Is to appreciate the geochemical importance of melting in the Earth and planets. During partial
melting, ung liquid daw ay naiiba sa source rock from coexisting residual minerals in composition and in
physical properties such as density and viscosity. The low viscosity, low density. at magkakaugnay na
texture of the liquid during partial ay nagpapahintulot sa pagkatunaw na lumipat mula sa pinagmulan at
sa gayon ay nag-trigger ng physical phenomena like volcanism as well as chemical segregation)

what is an example of partial melting?

- Partial melting occurs where the solidus and liquidus temperatures are different. For single
minerals this can happen when they exhibit solid solution, for example in olivines between iron
and magnesium. In rocks made up of several different minerals, some will melt at lower
temperatures than others.
(Nagaganap ang bahagyang pagkatunaw kung saan magkaiba ang temperatura ng solid at liquid. For
single minerals this can happen kapag nagpapakita sila ng solid solution, example sa mga olivines
between iron and magnesium. Sa mga bato na binubuo ng maraming iba't ibang mineral, ang ilan ay
matutunaw sa mas mababang temperatura kaysa sa iba.)

What are the three factors of partial melting?

- FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE PARTIAL MELTING:

1. Temperature.
2. Composition. Water Content (an additional component, lowers melting temperature)
3. Pressure. (decrease of pressure favors melt, less dense packing is allowed)

Magmas are generated by partial melting in a number of present-day plate tectonic settings, including
subduction zones, mid-ocean ridges, and hot spots.

What kind of magma is produced by partial melting of the mantle?

- Mafic
- This water lowers the melting temperature, causing partial melting of the ultramafic mantle to
produce mafic (basaltic) magma. This magma then migrates upwards and may reach Earth's
surface.

where does heat tranfer occur in partial melting?

- Magma from partial melting of mantle rocks rises upward through the mantle, and may pool at
the base of the crust, or rise through the crust. Moving magma carries heat with it, and some of
that heat is transferred to surrounding rocks.
