The Founding Of The Red Cross And Red

Crescent
It was June, 1859. A Swiss businessman named Hendry
Dunant was travelling around northern Italy. Unbenounced
to him, the French emperor Napoleon (III) was leading his
army not far away. Shortly after, Hendry Dunant was in the
middle of the battle of Solferino. The Austrians and the
French Italian alliance slaughter each other with no mercy.
The Businessman saw it all. By evening thousands lay
dead, thousands were also dying and wounded. The
medical troops could not cope. Help was crucially needed.
Resolutely he set up a makeshift hospital in a church in the
village, where the dying and wounded could be treated. He
was joined by the villages. They treated the Austrians,
French and Italian alike. He eventually returned to
Switzerland and published a book at 1862 called, A
Memory Of Solferino. Hendry Dunant proposed the
establishment in every country of a mutual independent
body of helpers who could provide protection and care in
case of war, regardless of sides. Shortly after, he and 4
other men formed The International Committee Of The Red
Cross.

Other than that, not all countries use the Red Cross.
Some use The Red Crescent instead of the cross. The
Ottoman Red Crescent Association was established
shortly after the foundation of Red Cross and developed as
a distinct independent organization. Today, all of the arab
origin/Islamic countries use the Crescent. These
organisation offers medical help, material, field hospitals
for soldiers during wars and disaster such as floods,
earthquake and more.
Today the International Red Cross and Red Crescent
Movement is a humanitarian movement with approximately
97 million volunteers, members and staff worldwide, and
was founded to protect human life and health, to ensure
respect for all human beings, and to prevent and alleviate
human suffering.

The Purpose: To protect human life and health, to

ensure respect for all human beings
and to prevent and human suffering.

History In Malaysia

The Malaysian Red Crescent (MRC) began in

1948 as a State of the British Red Cross
Society in Sabah and Sarawak. Upon
independence in 1957, MRC State branches in
the Malayan Peninsula were organised as the
Federation of Malaya Red Cross Society. This
was later statutorily incorporated by the
Federation of Malaya Red Cross Society
(Incorporation) Act, 1962.

The MRC received official recognition as an

independent National Society from the
International Committee of the Red Cross
(ICRC) on 4 July 1963. It was admitted as a
member of the International League of Red
Cross and Red Crescent Societies on 24
August 1963.

With the Federation of Malaysia formation on

16 September 1963, an Act to incorporate the
Federation of Malaya Red Cross Society and
the British Red Cross Society State branches
in Sabah and Sarawak under the name
‘Malaysian Red Cross Society’ was passed by
Parliament via the Malaysian Red Cross
Society.

In 1975, the Malaysian Parliament passed the

Malaysian Red Cross Society Act 1975, changing the
organisation’s name to its current name, the
Malaysian Red Crescent Society (MRCS). Both Acts
were revised and updated in 1995 and are referred to
as Act 540 today.

Presently, MRC is one of 191 National Societies that

are members of the International Federation of Red
Cross and Red Crescent Societies, which together
with the International Committee of the Red Cross
(ICRC) are components of the International Red
Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
