Hydrodynamic
Stability
Since is difficult to
solve explicitly the
hydrodynamic
equations it is common
to linearize the
equations in the
perturbation.
Sound is usually studied
using the linear
approximation with the
Euler or the Navier-
Stokes equations. The
Euler equations do not
include dissipative
mechanisms.
The question is if the
solution to the linear
equations provide a
definite answer to the
problem of
hydrodynamic
stability.
As we will see the
linear analysis
does not always
provide a definite
answer. We use
Burgers’ equation.
The Burgers’ Equation

The base flow is u(x,t)=0.

Substitution into
the Burgers’
equation gives:
The previous equation is the result from the
linear analysis. Since it gives a linear
equation, solutions in terms of normal
modes (exponentials) can be found.

Conclusions
• The linear temporal analysis
predicts that all perturbations will
decay. We found that there are
exact solutions that diverge in
finite time but that eventually
they will decay. So, the behavior of
the linear analysis and the exact
solution is different.
• Some of the unstable solutions
found with the linear analysis
gives rise to shock waves or to
traveling singularities that are
exact solutions of the Burgers’
equation. However, in both cases
there is a threshold for the
solutions to be produced.
• Canned Robust numerical
methods are unable to capture the
singularity found in the case of the
temporal analysis, but a more
detailed analysis in needed.
