Pamphila: You called me? Who is calling?
Dauus: I am calling you
Pamphila: What is it? Why are you calling me?

The servant knocks on the door.

Dauus: Hey you Pamphila! I am knocking on the door but you are
not answering the door, the door is closed.
Pamphila: (She opens the door) Why are you shouting? I run
about here and there, however you are shouting. I am busy,
however you are idle. You are not a slave, you are a rascal.
Dauus: I am not idle, Pamphila. It’s because today the
daughter of Demaenetus, my master, is being joined in
matrimony. They are getting married!

Demaenetus, master of the slave man and slave woman, enters

the stage.

Demaenetus: Why are you shouting, Dauus and Pamphila? Why are
you standing around? Why are you idle? Because today there are
the marriage rites of my daughter? Why haven’t you entered the
house and started preparing?

A male and female slave enter the stage and prepare the
marriage rites. The cooks and players enter the stage.
Demaenetus and the cook see a pipe girl.

Demaenetus: Hey you, who are you? I don’t know who you are.
Cooks and Pipe Girl: We are cooks and a pipe girl. We are
coming for your daughter’s wedding.
Demaenetus: Why haven’t you entered my house to prepare for
the wedding?

Cooks and a Pipe Girl enter Demaenetus’ house. Demaenetus

carries a crown and ointment. A pot is also being carried. The
pot is full of gold.

Demaenetus: Hey! I am preparing for a wedding today. All of my

family is hurrying about. They are hurrying about, girls and
boys, I have cooks and pipe-girls. Now the house is full of
cooks and pipe girls, and all cooks and pipe girls are
thieves. Hey! You are lost, man? Because the pot you have is
full of gold. Look! The pot is being carried. Now the pot is
being hidden. Because I’m very afraid. The gold smells and the
thieves can smell it. However, the gold won’t smell if it’s
underground. I could relay a message to the cook that I fear
the pipe girl is a thief. Therefore I could secretly hide it
underground. Otherwise anyone could watch me.

Demaenetus watches for someone spying on him. No one is.

Therefore Demaenetus sees no one.

Demaenetus: I am alone. But first of all, I approach the door

and I am entrusting the crown and ointment with you Larem.
