Introduction To Swachh Bharath Activity

The students and Faculty of Department of Mechanical Engineering of Don Bosco Institute
of Technology visited Timmegowdanadoddi Village for an activity of Swachh Bharat
Abhiyan as advised by the VTU

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is one of the most popular and significant missions in the History of
India. This campaign was introduced by the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, and was launched
on 2nd October 2014 to honour Mahatma Gandhi’s vision of a clean country.

The major objective of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is to spread the awareness of cleanliness and
the importance of it.

AICTE Activity Report

The concept of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is to provide basic sanitation facilities like toilets,
solid and liquid waste disposal systems, village cleanliness, and safe and adequate drinking
water supply to every person.

The activity of Swachh Bharat Abiyan by Mecchanical Department of Don Bosco Institute of
Technology was span around 13 days with different kind of activities for each respective days,
the students and the teachers were completely happy and enthusiastic to work for the
betterment and the cleanliness of the different parts of village such as schools as well as the
temples around the village.

The residents of the village were very welcoming and they also helped in the cleaning process,
especially Mrs. MAMTHA JAGADESH who was a grama panchayat member of madhapatna
village who took an active part almost every day to clean the premises of the village and to
help us.

On the first day of the activity, before visiting the village, the faculty as wells as Principal Mr.
Hemadri Naidu and HOD Dr. Shivanna had briefed us about the activities that the
department has planned to undertake in the village and had consulted the students on how the
activity can be undertaken in a better way.

The village had arranged an inauguration event to welcome the students and faculty at the
Higher Primary school in the madhapatna, teaching staff and the students of the school were
very welcoming and they welcomed us with the Morning Prayer.

There was lot of places to clean in the village and each and every other place was tougher than
the previous one to clean but due to our hardwork and continuous strive to achieve the goal we
were able to clean each and every location with utmost perfection that we could achieve, this
activity brought the teamwork and unity of the mechanical department together as one.

During these COVID times we have been informed on how important it is to keep our
surroundings and the neighborhood clean and tidy and Swachh Bharath Abhiyan is more
important now than ever.

AICTE Activity Report

Feasibility study provides a comprehensive understanding about a project or plan.

Furthermore, a feasibility study identifies potential challenges and problems while executing
the plan or project. Moreover, a feasibility study takes into consideration all relevant factors to
be considered in the implementation of the project or plan.

The preliminary survey was done by the faculties and guides of the activity and the students
were informed about the daily activities that they should do before the activity started through
a program flow.

The college management had provided us with all the equipment such as the paint, the paint
brush, pickaxe etc which were required for the volunteering work. We were also given with all
the safety equipment such as gloves etc.

CHAPTER 3
Objectives
The objectives of the Swachh bharat abhiyan activity were: -

• To spread awareness of clean and hygiene surrounding and environment.

• To clean the school and other public premises of the village.
• To teach the school kids about the importance of cleanliness.
• To guide the village residents on how to keep the surroundings and environment clean.
• To clean Government hospital
• To clean Basaveshwara Swamy Temple.
• To make the village cleaner than what it was before.

I can proudly say that the students and faculty of Mechanical Department have achieved all the above-
mentioned objectives of the activity by the end of the duration of the activity.

The objectives may sound basic and easy but it was never an easy thing to achieve but with
the efforts of each and every student and the faculty with the coordinators and help of the
village residents we could achieve these objectives.
The village of madhapatna is cleaner than what it was before and we students have raised awareness
around the residents of the village.

Work responsibilities
The day wise activities were spread around three sessions with a tea break and lunch break in between.

The day was divided as:-

AICTE Activity Report

us on what we were needed to do for the activity and the importance of it, after the briefing
session we were taken to the madhapatana village by our college van.

We reached the Higher Primary Schoool madhapatna after around 30mins of travel as we
reached the school, we had an inauguration ceremony headed by the staffs and faculty of DBIT
as well as the staff and faculty of the school, the inauguration was started by a prayer and a
briefing by the faculty of the school was done.

In the second session we were addressed by the coordinator on the program flow and how we need
to do the activity

After that we went to the survey of the location and we discussed on how to clean those locations in
the third session.

DAY 2 :09/03/2021
The second day was the actual day when the activity began, that is the cleaning and the
awareness program began, we had to take up all the tools and the start the cleaning on this day.
This day we had to cover and clean the whole government hospital, even though the hospital
was not big there was a lot of work to do, we had to clean the weeds and bushes that was grown
around the vicinity of the hospital with the help of a broom, it was a tiring day, it took all three
sessions to clean this day, but we were glad that we got good lunch to energize in between the
cleaning process

DAY 3: 10/03/2021
Today was the day to clean the Basaveshwara temple, this was a smaller temple
compared to the Higher Primary School madhapatna that we cleaned on the previous day, we
had to walk around 2-3KM to reach this temple, it was out of the village, even though the
temple was small, this temple had way more bushes and weeds covering it than the previous
temple, we all had to work together to finish cleaning this or else we couldn’t complete cleaning
this temple in a day, I could always hear the sound of the shovel hitting the mud or the pick
axe hitting the root of the weeds and shrubs which was growing around the temple, after all the
work of hitting and cleaning the shrubs and weeds, that was for the day 3.

DAY 4: 12/03/2021
We had a holiday yesterday and it was much needed to reenergize our body and mind
from all the work we have done. Today we did not have to walk or travel much because it was

Department of Mechanical Engineering (DBIT), Bangalore Page|7

AICTE Activity Report

the day to clean the Higher Primary School of madhapatna and we were very excited for it, we
cleaned the surrounding areas of the school and made a channel for the water to flow properly
at the outer borders of the school.

DAY 5: 13/03/2021

Today we had to paint the school walls and make it look as new, the paint and all the
accessories were provided to us by the college, we were required to paint the walls of the school
and give the school a brand-new skin, it was a really tiring work due to the hot and humid
temperature but we finished it off by separating and dividing the work to smaller parts and the
5th day was wrapped up.

DAY 6: 15/03/2021

Today we had to clean the RO Water Plant of the amount of weeds and shrubs around
that place was shocking, it was literally covered with weeds all over madhapatna, there were
climbers surrounding the pipe which connects the tank which was placed at an height of 30
feet it was very tiring work to clean off those climbers from those pipes then we removed
unwanted trees and plants covering the plant’s facility carefully without damaging the water
pipes connecting the RO plant to the village as this was one of the main water source of the
village.

Day 7: 16/03/2021

We had to clean the Shanimahatma Swamy Temple which was near to the school it was
a big temple we cleaned it nicely which even the villagers liked and we even got the help from
our co-ordinators and faculty and the help of Mr. Rajeeva H S

AICTE Activity Report

DAY 8: 17/03/2021

On this day we worked all three sessions and completed the painting of the remaining
parts of the school, some of my classmates even painted the portrait of Mahatma Gandhi, Pandit
Jawaharlal Nehru, Bhagat Singh and Dr. B R Ambedkar on the walls of the school which I hope
that will motivate the students to learn the values of these great personalities and could
implement it into their personal lives, this was a really good day and we completed the work
very easily. The staffs and the faculty of the school also liked the portrait of these great
personalities and they congratulated my classmates who painted it.

DAY 9: 18/03/2021

We had almost completed most of the cleaning of the villages and its surrounding now
we had to clean the newly tarred road and remove the rubbles and sand which was covering the
road which caused hindrance while riding the vehicle and this could have caused serious threat
to lives of the residents of the village residents, we sweeped and cleaned the road and removed
the sand off the road on this day.

DAY 10: 19/03/2021

By this day we had already cleaned almost all the places of the village and now it was
time for the awareness campaign/roadshow which was to raise the awareness of the residents
of the village on cleanliness and good hygiene, we used the slogans “Swachh Bharat, Sresht
Bharat” for our campaign which was well received by the residents of the village, we were
careful on not to shout the slogan too loudly which could have disturbed the people as most of
them were old aged and would have not likely taken it in a positive way. We went around the
whole village and I hope that we have raised the awareness on cleanliness and hygiene issues.

DAY 11: 20/03/2021

This was the last day of the activity and this day we had to raise the general awareness
of cleanliness among the people of the village on to keep the neighborhood clean and tidy and
how to maintain the cleanliness on those places which we have cleaned.

CHAPTER 4
Skills learnt and experiences gained
I truly value my experience and treasure everything it has thought me. Volunteering lets
us experience and learn things that we otherwise would not have learned; volunteering opens
doors for us that we may not have been able to open before. Volunteering provides us with
guidance and tolerance which we may use in the future to aid us in our decisions. At first glance,
volunteering may seem to only benefit those who are helped, but on a deeper level, one can
realize that volunteering benefits the volunteer as much as, if not more than, those who are
helped. Not only does volunteering make a difference in one’s community, but it also helps the
volunteer become a smarter, happier, friendlier and more caring individual.

Some of the important skills that I learned and was able to improve during the activity are:-

• Excellent communication, interpersonal and team building skills.

• Good listening skills.

• Creative thinking and problem-solving abilities.

• Compassion and the ability to empathize with people’s life.

• Knowledge and the ability of understanding the social issues

I strongly believe that all these skills will play an important part in my life to make myself a
confident individual who can face any situation in this present uncertain world, I even believe
that the employee will find me as a better fit for their organization due to these skills which I
gained overtime during volunteering,

Volunteering bolsters your confidence when you realize that you have gained the ability to be
less socially awkward! Employer’s love this as it means that: -

• You will be able to network and make small-talk with clients, and

• The office will not be a black hole of silence and discomfort.

Managing people is something you don’t get as much exposure to during university, nor do you
get heaps of it from a part-time job. This is where volunteering definitely comes in.

Department of Mechanical Engineering (DBIT), Bangalore P a g e | 10

AICTE Activity Report

The one major situation that comes to my mind when I speak about the skills learned is
when we had to paint the school building of the village that we had went to, the problem was
that school building was huge and we had less time to finish the painting work, so once we
found the problem we had to work on how to solve this, we all came together and called all the
students to work in a collaborative manner so that we could finish this within the given time,
we all started to work as a team and planned each and every stages on how and where to paint
first and last and who takes rest when and who paints when and due to our collaboration we
were able to finish the project within the allotted time, I think that this was an important part of
our volunteering experience as it had deeper impact on our cognitive thinking and working as
team to finish the task without any vested interest or ego. This situation helped us to gain and
mould skills such as:

• Teamwork and collaboration

• Cognitive thinking

• Time management

It was such a great experience to volunteer to the community which helped us volunteers to
gain new skills and which helped the community by the service we provided.

CHAPTER 5
Conclusion
By completing the Swachh Bharat Activity we were able to achieve the following outcomes:

• Clean and neat Governament hospital

• The removal of shrubs and weeds around the Basaveshwara Swamy Temple and its
overall cleanliness.
• Neat and tiny Shanimahatma Swamy Temple and its surrounding.
• Clean and newly painted Higher Primary School and its surroundings in madhapatna
clean roads of the village and now the vehicles can move easily without any risk of
slipping or skidding
• The residents of the village were more aware about the importance of clean and neat
surroundings of the village.
• Clean RO Plant and now the village residents doesn’t have to worry much about the
pipes being damaged because of the roots of the weeds and shrubs.

In conclusion I would like to say that I would love to continue volunteering and provide
something to the community as much as I can, this was such a great experience which
moulded my skills and which would help me in my career and my life in general. This
activity has been an eye opener and a good exposure for the students on the life in the
village and this experience has made us humbler towards our personal lives, even the
students of our college has learned the importance of cleanliness and good hygiene and
how important it is to our daily life.
