PCE Slickline/Digital Line Overview: Section 4.1
The purpose and objective of Section 4 is to guide and regulate the choice of
Pressure Control Equipment for Slickline/Digital Line operations.
The choice will be made according to:
Well head pressure origin.
Well head pressure actual or possible value.
Working environment.
Type of operation.
Pressure Operations are divided into 3 different operating conditions:
Surface Induced and Wellsite Controlled with WHP > 1 psi
Reservoir Induced with WHP = 0, but contingency cases could lead to a WHP > 1
psi
Reservoir Induced Pressure with WHP > 1 psi

PCE Premium Seal Definition: Section

4.3.2
A Premium seal has a thread
independent sealing mechanism: a
metal to metal seal backed up with an
O-Ring.
Premium seals can be used for
Lubricator/Riser and Wireline Valve
unions with rated Working Pressure
(WP) 10,000 psi and below, as
alternative to integral connections as
long as the seal is made up of a metal
to metal seal backed up with an O-
Ring seal.

Is a active well barrier *seals while wire is moving or stationary”

The Slickline stuffing box must be equipped with a plunger or ball check.

Hydraulic stuffing boxes must be used when H2S is present.

Manual nut style stuffing boxes can be used up to 5000 psi WP with no H2S
present.
A hydraulic style of stuffing box is recommended.

PCE Slickline/Digital Line Liquid Seal

Head: Section 4.5.1.2
Same principal that is used for a GIH.
Seal is achieved by injecting grease
into the insert stack (mini flow tubes)
at a pressure above well head
pressure.
Ball check is incorporated into the
head.
Recommended for High Pressure,
Hostile wells.
Low friction characteristics.
Hydraulic stuffing box must be used to
help guide the wire, etc.

WELL INTERVENTION
SLK - POM Pressure Control Equipment (Section 4)

PCE Slickline/Digital Line Chemical Injection

Sub: Section 4.5.1.3
Is designed to apply a de-icing agent,
corrosion inhibitor, or to lubricate slickline
during well service operations.
Is recommended on High Pressure dry
gas wells due to the drying effect on the
stuffing box packing and the slickline.
Is placed under the stuffing box.
Can act as a fluid barrier between the well
and the stuffing box, thus preventing
hydrates from forming and “icing up” the
stuffing box.

PCE Tool (Head) Catcher: Section

4.5.1.4/5.4.1.6
Is primary a safety device, designed to catch
the toolstring if it is drawn into the lubricator
rig up to quickly and hits the top.
Should be used on Semi-Submersibles or
Floaters.
The tool catcher must be remotely operated.
Dogs need to be changed to fit the correct
size of fishing neck.
Is placed under the stuffing box.

PCE Quick Test Sub: Section 4.5.1.8

Inserted in the rig up at the position of
the joint normally opened to insert
and retrieve tools from the well.
Subsequent pressure tests can be
made using the Quick Test Sub to
verify the integrity of the union that
has been disconnected, rather than
having to test the complete rig up.
Must be used during perforating
operations.

tools are pulled into the SB, out of the
rope socket.
Two flappers in through bore
Indicator arms
Can be manual or hydraulic (must be
hydraulic when H2S is present)
Safety – care when lowering tools

PCE Bleed Sub: Section 4.5.1.7

A bleed sub is used for applications up
to 10,000psi WP Standard or Sour
Service, when a bleed off port is
required on the pressure control
equipment rig up.

For PCE rated above 10,000psi WP,

the bleed-off valve must be part of the
wireline valve block manifold.

Some have 2 ports

Must be used when no lateral or flow line valve is Present.
Allows client to kill well if needed.
When placed below lowest pressure barrier:
Lateral entry must be integral or connected with API6A flange.
Must be connected to gate type valve with API6A flange. Plug valves allowed up
to 5000psi WP.
Hammer unions are only permitted after gate/plug valve.

When placed above lowest pressure barrier:

PCE Grease Injection Head: Section 5.4.1.1/5.4.1.2/5.4.1.3/5.4.1.5

Oil Saver (Line Wiper), Pack Off, Flow Tubes, Ball Check Valve
An oil saver must be utilized with grease injection to reduce grease spillage.
The Pack off must be used and it will be hydraulic and remotely operated.
For operations above 1500 psi MPWHP, flow tubes with pack off must be utilized.
Solid flow tubes (e.g. SWS type) or concentric flow tubes (e.g. Bowen type) can be
used.
Number of Flow Tubes should contain 1.2 times MPWHP.
One Flow tube below grease injection point.
This applies from 3/16 to 5/16 cable. For larger size lines the pressure gradient
must be less than 2000 psi per tube.
A Ball Check Valve must be used for all Grease Injection Operations.
For gas wells it is also recommended to limit the gradient to 2000 psi and 1600 psi.

Single Hydraulic Line Wiper-Pack Off (Swab
Head).
Fitted on top of GIH.
Removes excess grease from cable.
Used in Low Pressure environments like
swabbing.
Activated if grease pump stops.

Dual Hydraulic Line Wiper-Pack Off (Swab

Head).
Fitted on top of GIH.
Removes excess grease from cable.
Used in Low Pressure environments like
swabbing.
Recommended for Swabbing operations.

PCE Grease Injection Units/Injection Points: Section 5.4.1.4/5.4.1.9
Must always be capable to pump grease at a pressure 30% above MAOP.
Up to 5000 psi. No H2S, single air operated pump with a ratio of 75:1.
Up to 5000 psi. H2S, two air operated pumps with a ratio of 75:1, one pump is for
backup.
WP = 10,000 psi. pumps must have ratio of 104:1
WP = 15,000 psi. pumps must have ratio of 235:1
Above 5000 psi. grease injection units must have redundant air pumps.
Grease Injection Units: SPOT – Intermediate – Annual Inspection detailed
maintenance procedures can be found in InTouch content ID #3839383. Major re-
certification procedures can be found in InTouch content #3461601.
All injection points into the well, such as grease injection or glycol injection must be
close coupled to a check valve.
The check valve must have the same Working Pressure (WP) as the equipment it is
installed on.

PCE Cable Cutter: Section 5.4.1.11

Advantages of this item of pressure control equipment are
found during a stuck cable operation.
Limits or even negates the need to strip cable through the
closed wireline valve inner seals
Can disconnect the lubricator directly above the wireline
valve.
Avoids the need for cutting the cable at a potentially
hazardous height.
Provides an adequate working length of cable the length
of the lubricator.
The cable cutter hydraulic fittings must be different from
all others used in the rig up.

PCE Braided Line/Stranded Line Work: Section 5.5.1

The top sheave should be suspended from an independent point/line sheave
hangar (dogbone) other than the one suspending the Pressure Control
Equipment.
One risk underlying a single lift point rig up (PCE and sheave hooked to the same
point) is that in case of a SCOP (stuck cable operating procedure, InTouch content
ID # 3331587) whenever lifting the lubricators (risers) along with the top sheave,
this will imply a cable movement across the wireline valve inner seals.
Another risk underlying a single lift point rig up is when lifting the PCE from the
wellhead for tool change out, if no slack is given to the cable the rope socket can
top out on the bottom of the Grease Head causing a rope socket failure where the
tool string is dropped out of the lubricator onto personnel and/or equipment.
