The Western Sydney Recycling Directory

The directory has been designed to assist you in managing construction & demolition waste in a way that
avoids sending reusable materials to landfill. Below is a description of the different types of services and
facilities that are prevalent in the recycling industry.

Typical Ways of Managing C&D Waste

Source Separation
The work crew separates waste materials as they are generated through strategic location of two or more
waste bins or compounds. The advantages include significant savings in charges at recycling facilities and
greater rates of waste minimisation and resource recovery.

Mixed Bins
Mixed waste materials can be manually or machine dropped into one large skip. The contractor will then
organise for the material to be separated, either on your site or at a sorting facility, before sending it on to be
recycled or disposed of appropriately. While this is a more expensive way to manage your waste it involves
less manual handling of materials.

The C&D Recycling industry

Recycling Facility - turns a waste product into a new, usable product. For instance, crushing
concrete, bricks and tiles to make road base and drainage mediums. Some facilities will only
accept materials delivered by tipper truck. It is recommended that you call ahead to find out their
individual requirements and charges.

Transfer / Sorting Station - a place that manually or mechanically sorts mixed waste into
separate recycling streams. The station will then send the material onto a recycling facility. Many
sorting stations also operate a skip bin service. Some facilities will only accept materials
delivered by tipper truck. It is recommended that you call ahead to find out their individual
requirements and charges.

Skip Bin Hire Company - provides one or multiple bins for you to contain mixed or separated
c&d waste on site. The skip bin company will collect the bins and take them on to a Transfer
Station or Recycling Facility.

Site Cleaners - often a demolition company that also provides a service collecting c&d waste.
Some site cleaners will sort and separate on the job site, others will sort it elsewhere. Some also
mulch green waste or crush bricks on site.

service regulates the exchange process and provides necessary documentation.

Construction Connect is an online trading site where Builders, Landscapers, Earthmovers, Suppliers and
General Public can list their excess or second-hand building materials or clean fill they no longer need.
Buyers contact the sellers directly to organise a sale. The aim is to keep valuable resources from being
disposed of to landfill and preserve natural resources.
