ERSE FUNCTION

One-to-One Function
The function f from X to Y is called one-to-one if whenever
𝑓 (𝑎 )=𝑓 (𝑏 ), then 𝑎 =𝑏 . No element of y is the image of
more than one element in X.

The function f is one-to-one if for any in the domain of f,

then 𝑓 (𝑥 )≠ . That is, the same y-value is never paired with
two different 𝑥 -values.
Horizontal Line Test
A function is a one-to-one if each horizontal line does
not intersect the graph at more than one point.

Horizontal and Vertical Line Test

All functions satisfy the vertical line test. All one-to-one
functions satisfy both the vertical and horizontal line tests.
Determine whether the given relation is a function. If it is a function,
determine whether it is one-to-one or not.

1. The relation pairing an SSS member to his or her SSS number

2. The relation pairing a real number to its square.

3. The relation pairing an airport to its airport code

4. The relation pairing a person to his or her citizenship.

Inverse of a One-to-One Function
The inverse of a function is a set of ordered pairs formed by reversing the
coordinates of each ordered pair of the function. The domain of the
inverse function is the range of the function, and the range of the inverse
function is the domain of the function
Steps in Solving the Inverse of a One-
to-One Function
1. Write the function in the form 𝑦 =𝑓 (𝑥 );

2. Interchange the x and y variables;

3. Solve for y in terms of x

Note: Not every function has an inverse

EXAMPLE
Find the inverse of 𝑓 (𝑥 )=3𝑥 +1

Interchange x and y variables:

𝑥 =3𝑦 +1
3. Solve for y in terms of x:

𝑥 =3𝑦 +1
𝑥 −1=3𝑦
EXAMPLE
Find the inverse of

Interchange x and y variables:

3. Solve for y in terms of x:

EXAMPLE
Find the inverse of

Interchange x and y variables:

𝑥 =3𝑦 +1
3. Solve for y in terms of x:

𝑥 =3𝑦 +1
𝑥 −1=3𝑦
(Place all the terms with y on one side and those without y on the
other side.)

Therefore the inverse of is

Graphs of Inverse Function
The graph of the inverse is the reflection if the graph of the original
function. The axis of symmetry is the line 𝑦 =𝑥 .

The graphs of are a reflection of with respect to the line
