1.4 Reason
The procedure in this service bulletin will modify the software in the MFD to provide all
existing functionality of previous MFD software levels, including optional functions, except
as described in the following paragraph. For some MFDs, it will add support for the MLX770
Two-Way Datalink Transceiver System, full compatibility with the Avidyne TWX670 Tactical
Weather detection System, additional WSI Inflight datalink weather and XM Datalink
weather coverage and products. For all MFDs it will add capability to allow the display of
lightning, winds & temps aloft, and satellite IR imagery received via the MLX770. Also for
all MFDs, the capability to display Europe VFR (Bottlang) charts will be added.
NOTE: The Orbcomm Narrowcast Datalink function is not supported by the MFD
Release 8.1 Software. If the MFD being considered for upgrade makes use of
the Orbcomm Narrowcast Datalink function, the upgrade described in this
service bulletin should not be performed. In fact, the upgrade steps described
in section 3.3.2.1 will not be able to be accomplished.
NOTE: Some installations of EX5000 MFDs have been made with Garmin 400 and 500
series GPS units connected via RS-232 under previous revisions of the 600-
00073 installation manual. Those installations are known, non-compliant
installations with respect to TSO-C165 as curved paths from the GPS are
depicted as straight lines on the MFD. Avidyne recommends customers with
Garmin 400 and 500 series GPS units connected via RS-232 switch to an
ARINC 429 connection, otherwise the following warning must be added to the
pilot’s guide: “Warning: The EX5000 MFD will display straight lines instead of
curved lines when curved paths are in the flight plan of a Garmin 400 or 500
series GPS unit.” For more information see the EX5000 Installation Manual,
600-00073 Rev 24 or later.

1.5 Description
This Service Bulletin describes the procedures to field-install the new Release 8.1 software
part number 530-00201-XXX into an EX5000 MFD.
NOTE: The actions of this service bulletin DO NOT transfer navigation or chart
databases, or checklist data. These databases must be updated through the
normal update procedures to be current.
NOTE: The Save and Restore Utility will not restore the previous 100 hours of EMax
Engine Data to the MFD software. To save the last 100 hours of EMax Engine
Data from the MFD software, the EMax Total Engine Management download
procedure needs to be accomplished before proceeding with the Save &
Restore procedures.

1.6 Compliance

3.3.2 Part II – Upgrading to Release 8.1 Software

3.3.2.1 Update Procedure

NOTE: The field loadable software utility is a one-time update utility. Once an
update has been performed with it, the utility is disabled.

1. _____ With the MFD installed in the aircraft and powered off, attach the Compact Flash
card reader device with the upgrade utility 053-00204-000 Compact Flash card to the data
loader port on the MFD
2. ______ Apply power to the MFD.

NOTE: If the blue MFD startup screen is displayed, power down the MFD, check the
seating of the Compact Flash card reader and return to step 2.

3. _____ Once the MFD has started and the MFD Field Loadable Software Upgrade Utility
screen is shown, press proceed to start the upgrade

NOTE: : If the Field Loadable Software Upgrade Utility detects that the MFD does not
contain one of the software part numbers in Table 1 either an error message
will be displayed or the MFD will start in normal mode. In either case repeat
Part I of this procedure.
NOTE: If the utility determines that the MFD software has already been upgraded to
Release 8.1 software, a caution message will be displayed and the utility will
not run.
NOTE: If the utility determines that the Orbcomm Narrowcast function is enabled in
the software currently on the MFD, a message will be displayed informing the
operator that the Orbcomm Narrowcast function is not supported in the
Release 8.1 MFD Software, and the utility will not run. It is necessary to
deactivate the Orbcomm Narrowcast function on the MFD before the software
upgrade can be perfomed, and after the upgrade it will NOT be possible to re-
activate the now-unsupported Orbcomm Narrowcast function.
NOTE: If the MFD software compact flash does not have enough memory to complete
the upgrade, a caution message will be displayed and the utility will not run.
This situation can be caused by a large charts (CMax) data file. If this occurs,
reload charts using a smaller data file created using a smaller region. Refer to
CMax Update Guide (600-00148-000 Rev 02 or later) for instructions on how to
create a charts file using a smaller region. After loading the smaller charts file,
continue the upgrade from Step 1.

Rev: 00 Service Bulletin 601-00004-099

30 June 2010 Page 22 of 25
4. _____ After approximately 1 minute and when prompted, disconnect the Compact Flash
card reader and press any key to continue the update. The upgrade will continue for
another several minutes during which time the MFD will be restart several times.
NOTE: If, after you have disconnected the Compact Flash card reader and pressed a
key to continue, the MFD does not start automatically and the screen remains
dark for more than a minute, cycle power on the MFD. This will cause the
Field Software Utility to advance to the next stage.

It is important that you continue this procedure, using the manual power
restart if necessary, since at this point the license on the compact flash has
been consumed and the utility cannot start over from the beginning.

It may be necessary to repeat this manual power cycling at the end of

subsequent upgrade states, if the MFD screen remains dark for over a minute.
NOTE: The Field Loadable Software Utility will take approximately 5 minutes to
complete. During the upgrade, you may see filenames shown on the utility
screen that suggest they are files for aircraft models other than that being
upgraded. This is normal behavior. The utility copies over all new MFD
software files and then only uses the files appropriate to a particular software
part number corresponding to a particular aircraft make.

5. _____ When the utility is complete, the MFD will restart in normal mode. When
prompted, press any bezel key to continue to Maintenance Mode. Continue to Section
3.3.2.1 to validate the update.

NOTE: If you see a persisted red error message or a blank black screen instead of the
confirmation screen or the startup screen, an error has occurred. Try running
the Field Loadable Software Upgrade Utility again starting at step 1. A red
message saying “Warning C: Partition is writeable” will be displayed
momentarily during the upgrade; this is normal behavior.

3.3.2.2 Update Validation

6. _____ Verify in the MFD Maintenance mode page that each external sensor system is
configured correctly. Once verified that the MFD is configured correctly, press the
“Restart” key.
7. _____ Verify that the software version number is 530-00201-XXX Rev 00 as shown near the
bottom of the power-up screen. If the software version is incorrect, contact Avidyne Sales
at 800-284-3963.

NOTE: There is a change in the way time of day is stored on the MFD between some
older versions of the MFD software and software version 530-00201-XXX.
Some older software stored the time as Local time on the MFD, but software
part number 530-00201-XXX interprets that time as UTC. Failure to perform

the following steps will affect the display of NEXRAD images from the

databases. These databases must be updated through the normal update
procedures to be current.
NOTE: If optional software functions had been activated on the MFD installation,
they will need to be re-activated on the new software Compact Flash. See the
appropriate software function activation service bulletins for instructions.
NOTE: On Cirrus Aircraft and Cessna/Columbia Aircraft the CSR Utility Zip disk
does not restore the Checklist option on the Release 8.1 software compact
flash. Additional Post-Accomplishment Checkout procedures would require
the installer to re-enter in the Maintenance Mode page, select Aircraft Setup,
and select the appropriate Aircraft make/model checklist applicable.
NOTE: The field loadable software utility 053-00204-000 does not update the checklist

NOTE: When updating some older MFD systems, the CSR Utility does not transfer the
Brightest and Darkest dimming voltage settings from the original system to
the Release 8.1 system. Instead, the restored system will have the default
values. Additional Post-Accomplishment Checkout procedures would require
the installer to re-enter in the Maintenance Mode page, select Aircraft Setup,
and re-establish the desired Brightest and Darkest dimming voltage settings.
NOTE: If any anomalous or unexpected behavior is seen on the MFD during post-
upgrade checkout, contact Avidyne before returning the MFD to service. Call
