SUBJECT TEACHERS:
QUARTER 4 MELC 17: Use appropriate grammatical signals or expressions suitable to each
pattern of idea development:
Cause-Effect
When writers develop ideas, they use words that will help them in conveying thoughts
more clearly and properly. This is what we call grammatical signals or transitional
signals. Note that these signals can be used in multiple patterns of idea development.
Cause and effect" is a relationship between events or things, where one is the result of
the other or others. This is a combination of action and reaction. Something happens
(a cause) that leads to an effect.
Signal words, or transitions, are signposts that help guide the reader through the terrain of the
writer’s thoughts. They help connect the ideas in a text or the events in a story. Often they do
this by answering implicit questions. In the case of cause and effect, these are the What? of
the effect and the Why? of the cause. Different signal words can be used to indicate each. For
example:
Because
Because of
Since
As a result of
As a consequence of
Now that
So
Therefore
This resulted in
Consequently
Hence
Accordingly
