QUARTER 4 MELC 17: Use appropriate grammatical signals or expressions suitable to each
pattern of idea development:

Cause-Effect

When writers develop ideas, they use words that will help them in conveying thoughts
more clearly and properly. This is what we call grammatical signals or transitional
signals. Note that these signals can be used in multiple patterns of idea development.

Cause and effect

A cause and effect write up looks at the reasons for an action or an event, then the results. For
this reason, cause and effect selections are sometimes referred to as reason and result essays.
They are one of the most common forms of organization in writing.

Cause and effect" is a relationship between events or things, where one is the result of
the other or others. This is a combination of action and reaction. Something happens
(a cause) that leads to an effect.

SIgnal Words and Phrases

Signal words, or transitions, are signposts that help guide the reader through the terrain of the
writer’s thoughts. They help connect the ideas in a text or the events in a story. Often they do
this by answering implicit questions. In the case of cause and effect, these are the What? of
the effect and the Why? of the cause. Different signal words can be used to indicate each. For
example:

Cause (The Why)

 Because

 Because of

 Since

 As a result of

 As a consequence of

 Now that

Effect (The What)

 So

 Therefore

 This resulted in

 Consequently

 Hence

 Accordingly

QUARTER 2 MELC 15: Use appropriate cohesive devices in various type of

speech

Identify the different cohesive devices and its usage.

Cohesive Devices
 Cohesive devices, sometimes called linking words, linkers,
connectors, discourse markers or transitional words.
 Cohesive Devices are words or phrases that show the relationship
between paragraphs or sections of a text or speech.

Let’s look at these two examples below:

1. Netflix has many movies and shows, and it is only 350php per
month.
2. The Christmas tree is natural, but it is
expensive.

As we can see in the sentences above, and is used to add something to the
previous statement,

In the second sentence, we can see how something positive, and negative is said
about the Christmas. We know that because the word is used to contrast ideas.
