CHAPTER 5

ANALYSIS OF DIFFERENT SHAPED PLANE ICE TUBULAR STUB

COLUMNS
5.1 GENERAL

This chapter deals with the dimensional details, modelling details and analysis of different
shaped Ice Tubular Stub Column in ANSYS software. The different shapes used for the
analysis includes pentagon, L shape, T shape and hexagon.

5.2 GEOMETRIC MODELLING OF DIFFERENT SHAPED PLANE ICE STUB

COLUMNS

In order to determine the effective shape for the Ice Filled Steel Tubular stub column four
different shapes are selected for the analysis. The four different shapes chosen for the
comparison are pentagon, L shape, T shape and hexagon.

5.2.1 Structural details

Dimensional details of the specimens are given in the Table 5.1. The areas of cross section
of these four different shapes are kept as almost equal around 22000mm2. The length of
the column is 300mm.

Table 5.1 Dimensional details of ICE specimens

Shape of specimen Size of specimen(mm)

Hexagon Edge width = 94
L shape ( 210 × 54 ) & ( 210 × 54 )
T shape ( 210 × 54 ) & ( 210 × 54 )
Pentagon Edge width = 115
5.2.2 Material properties
The material properties are given in the Table 5.2.

MATERIAL PROPERTY

Ice Young’s modulus, E = 9100 MPa

Poisson’s ratio, µ = 0.33

Shear modulus = 3421 MPa

5.2.3 Modelling
The modelling of the four different shaped ICE columns is done by using SOLID186
element type to determine the effective shape. The end supporting condition is provided as
one end fixed. The modelling of the different ICE specimens is shown on the Fig.5.1.

5.2.4 Meshing and loading
It is very important to select the mesh size and layout in Finite Element Analysis (FEA). A
proper mesh means accurate results with better convergence but also has time consideration.
A very fine mesh model will always provide accurate results but will require excessive
computer time. Here eight noded hexahedron mesh with size 25mm is selected. Meshed
model of different shaped ICE section is shown in the Fig. 5.2.

5.3 ANALYSIS

Static structural analysis determines the displacements, stresses, strains, and forces in
structures or components caused by loads. Static structural analysis is carried out in ANSYS
software. Deformation and load carrying capacity is studied. The deformation diagram
obtained for pentagon, L shaped, T shaped and hexagon ICE stub columns are shown in
the Fig.5.3.

5.4 RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

The maximum load carried by the different shaped ICE columns is taken into account to
determine the effective shape of Ice section. The comparison of the different shaped Ice
columns is shown in the Fig.5.3. Table 5.3 gives the load and deformation of the different
shaped Ice sections.
