Grammar Guide:
1. Talking about results (using first conditional)

We use first conditional sentences to talk about a situation that is possible to happen and
its result.
If + S + V (present simple), S + will/ can + V-infinitive
If clause Main clause (result)
S + V (present simple) S + will/ can + V-infinitive
If you buy 2 T-shirts, you’ll get another one free.
If you book the table for 2 people, you can ask for a free bottle of wine.
If you aren’t satisfied with the product, the shop will give you your money back.
If the restaurant doesn’t open today, we won’t be able to book a table.

Note: The main clause can come before or after the if clause.
Ex: If you buy 2 T-shirts, you’ll get another one free.
= You’ll get another one free if you buy 2 T-shirts.

2. Asking about results (using first conditional)

If clause Main clause (result) Answers

S + present simple (Wh-) Will/ Can + S + V-inf?
If I buy 3 bottles, will I get a discount? Yes, you will/ No, you won’t.
If I don’t like it, can I take it back? Yes, you can/ No, you can’t.

Note: The main clause can come before or after the if clause.
Ex: Will I get a discount if I buy 3 bottles?
