RULES FOR WRITING
ROMAN NUMERALS

Repetition of numerals
such as
I,X,C & M means addition.
II=1+1=2
 XX=10+10=20
 XXX=10+10+10=30
 MMM=1000+1000+1000=3000
 CCC=100+100+100=300

NOTE BOOK
A symbol cannot be repeated more
than 3 times in the succession.

We cannot write 40 as XXXX


( the symbol cannot be
repeated more than 3 times)

We cannot write 4 as IIII

RULE 2

If a smaller numeral is
written to the right of a
greater numeral ,it is added
to the greater numeral.
Example:
XI=10+1=11
XV=10+5=15
LX=50+10=60
DC=500+100=600
NOTE BOOK
RULE 3

If a smaller numeral written to the left


of a larger numeral, then it is
subtracted from the larger numeral .

IV = 4(5-1 )
XC= 90 (100-10)
CD=400(500-100)
You can subtract a number only once.

When a smaller numeral is written in


between two numerals of greater
values , it is subtracted from the
numeral on its right .

MCM =1000 +(1000-100)=1900


XXXIV = 30 +(5-1)=34

NOTE BOOK
The symbols V, L,D cannot be
repeated or subtracted.
Repetition of a symbol is not allowed
more than 3 times.
The symbol I can be subtracted from V
and X only.
The symbol X can be subtracted from L
and C only
