Semen Handling Protocols...

1) Never lift the goblet containing semen out of the flask, keep it in the
neck of the flask at the frost line.
2) Use the semen inventory card to identify the required straw.
3) Always use tweezers to remove a straw, never fingers.
4) Clean the water in the thaw bath daily.
5) Water temperature needs to be 35c – 37c.
6) Places semen straw in the water for 30 seconds (No more)
7) Use a timer to regulate this (don’t guess)
8) Remove the straw from the water and immediately wrap in dry paper towel
which will dry the straw (water is a spermicide) and protect from elements.
9) Keep the straw wrapped in paper towel and holding it from the crimped end
give two vigorous shakes to move the air bubble to the crimp.
10) Load the semen straw into a warm gun then quickly cut 10mm off the
crimped end.
11) Make sure the cut is 90 degrees to ensure the sheath insert forms a seal.
12) Attach the sheath and then place the loaded AI gun in your clothing to
protect it from the elements.
13) Conventional semen needs to be inseminated within 15 minutes of thawing.
14) Sexcel® needs to be inseminated within 5 minutes of thawing.
Never thaw more than four conventional straws at once.
Thaw one Sexcel® straw at a time.

Note: Sexcel® may be used solely for single artificial insemination of one female bovine during natural ovulation with the intent to produce a single offspring.
