EE 231 Water resources and transportation engineering

Assignment N0.1

An intake structure is required at the entrance to the conduit through which water is
withdrawn from the source. Intake structures vary depending upon nature of the water
source, climatic conditions, capacity requirements and other factors. Conduct a
literature survey (at least five literatures MUST be consulted) on different types of intake
structures with respect to source type, design criteria and practical limitations. From the
literature survey, select one type of intake structure and prepare a detailed design
including engineering drawings.

The water sources to be considered include river with seasonal water level variations
(Group 1&2), lake (Group 3&4), dam (Group 5&6), borehole (Group 7&8), spring (Group
9&10) and rainwater harvesting (Group 11&12).

Make necessary assumptions.
