Passage 1
Instructions: Read the email and choose the correct option (a–c) to answer the questions.

Hi Mum and Dad,

Well, I can't believe that another school year has finished. I wish I could come home and see you
for the summer, but I've got a job looking after two little children. I had applied for a waitressing
job, which was better paid than what I'm doing now, but they wanted someone with experience,
which I don't have, so I didn't get it. I started last week, and it seems to be all right. The children
are nice, and their mother Karen is OK, too, although I don't see very much of her because she
works. For my first day with the children, Karen thought it would be nice if we did something fun
together, so she asked me to take them to the zoo. I hadn't been to a zoo since I was a little girl,
but I remember that you used to take me quite often and I loved it. I don't remember though, why
we stopped going.

Anyway, my first shock was how expensive it was. It cost twenty pounds for adults and fifteen
pounds fifty for each child but there was a two-pound discount for students like me. Of course,
Karen had given me the money - she paid for my ticket as well. The zoo was much bigger than I
remembered and there was so much to see that we regularly spent the whole day there.

We saw every kind of animal you can imagine. Ryan, the little boy, loved the reptile house with
all those disgusting snakes and Julie liked the tigers, but my favorite was the elephant house. I
don't know what it is about elephants, especially the babies, but I love them. Maybe I should have
been an explorer or a tropical vet or something. It was absolutely brilliant! Maybe we should all
go together again like we used to.

Anyway, I have to go.

Bye for now

Jane

Passage 2
Read the email and choose the correct option (a–c) to complete the sentences (1–5).
Dear Mum and Dad,
I'm writing this email because I've got some important news to tell you. I'm getting married! Isn't
that great?
It all happened last night. We were having dinner in a very nice Italian restaurant when Jake
suddenly became all quiet and said he had something to tell me. He looked so serious that I was
afraid he was going to break up with me or tell me he had a terrible illness, but then he took a little
black box out of his pocket and put it in front of me. I opened it and inside was an engagement
ring and he just said, 'Will you marry me?' I was so excited that I didn't even stop to think about it
and replied, 'Yes, of course, I will, silly!' And I put the ring on my finger. So, there we were,
engaged!
Then we spent the rest of the evening making plans. Can we have the wedding at your house?
You've got such a big, beautiful garden that it'll be perfect. We are going to wait until after my
final exams in June and I thought a good day would be 10th July. That gives us eight months to
plan everything. It should be enough time, especially as we don't want a big traditional white
wedding - just a big party with our best friends and family. We're not going to start a family straight
away because I need to get my career going, and I might even decide to stay on at university and
do a master's, but before we do that, we're going to travel around the world for a year. Jake can
take a career break for that time; his office has already said it's OK. It's so exciting!
Anyway, I have to get to class now. I'll phone you tomorrow.
Your loving daughter,
Lucy

Passage 3
Instructions: Read the text. Are the questions true or false? Write true or false.

As part of a student project, we recently spent a Saturday morning in a local supermarket asking
people about their household items and shopping habits. This is what we found.

Nearly everyone said that they have less money to spend now than they had this time two years
ago. About two-thirds of shoppers also said that it now costs more to do their weekly shop than
before. About 40 percent said they prefer to buy glass bottles and jars because it is better for the
environment, but less than half of those people said they actually recycle the glass things they buy.
People who usually buy plastic bottles and cartons said they do so because glass is very heavy and
it's easier to carry plastic. Only a very few people, about five percent, said they never recycle
anything, and luckily not one person said they don't care about the environment.

QUESTION
1. The project was done by employees of the supermarket.
2. About 65 percent of people think that it is more expensive to shop
now than in the past.
3. Over a third of shoppers buy glass to help the environment.
4. Fifty percent of people recycle glass bottles.
5. More than five people in a hundred don't care about helping the
environment.

Passage 4
Instructions: Read the email and answer the questions.

Hi Adrian,
I thought I’d send you a quick email now because I don’t know when I’m going to be free again
until after the conference. Also, there’s a problem with the internet access here in the hotel. There’s
wi-fi in some places but I don’t think I’ve got it in my room. Anyway, I’m online now, so I hope
I can send this before we lose the connection.

My flight was good and there were no problems. It was a bit boring, but I never really enjoy
travelling anyway. When I arrived in Singapore, it was quite hot, and I went straight to the hotel.
If you want to phone me, I’ll text you the number of the direct line to my room, but don’t wake
me up in the middle of the night. Remember we’re about eight hours ahead here.

The conference should be interesting. They sent us a lot of information about all the talks that
people are giving but I haven’t really read it all yet. I started reading on the plane but then a good
film came on – it was the new one with Colin Firth and you know what a good actor I think he is.

Sorry, but I have to go now. I’ve just had a text telling me they’re waiting for me downstairs for
lunch.
Hope all is well at home,
Lucy

12

Passage 5
The people below are all planning a trip to London
Decide which activities ( letter A-H) would be the most suitable for each person/people 1-5
1 Maria and Angelo, from Italy, have just won a 3-day
trip to London in June. They are very excited about
it because they haven't seen London and its sights
before. However, they are worried because their
English is not very good.
2 Keith and Jenny are planning to visit London next
week to do their Christmas shopping. Keith wants to
buy presents for his family. Jenny, who loves
designer clothes, has decided to buy herself a special
evening outfit for Christmas Eve.
3 Ian Johnson is visiting London to do some
sightseeing. He's an archaeology student and very
keen to see sites of historical interest.

4 The Elliots love the theatre, especially musicals and

comedy shows. They have planned to visit London
mainly to see the latest performances, but they
haven't got much money to spend.
5 Julie is planning a 4-day holiday in London in order
to see her friends and go shopping. She loves
handmade things, unusual ornaments and souvenirs.
She doesn't want to spend too much.

13
A. CANAL BOAT TRIPS
Four different day trips are available. We recommend the London Ring Cruise, a unique·
12-hour trip making a circular tour of London on 5 different waterways. All provide an
opportunity to explore industrial history and enjoy views of well-known landmarks.
B. THE LONDON NOBODY KNOWS
Discover the secret history of London on this guided walk round the old city, whose hidden
courts and streets are keyholes into London's past. You'll see everything from traces of
Roman London to a forgotten Norman Crypt; and from the musty cells of an ancient prison
to a beautiful but hidden 300-year-old courtyard and hall
C. THE ORIGINAL LONDON SIGHTSEEING TOUR Enjoy the sights of London from a
traditional double-decker bus (open top in summer). We'll take you to the world-famous
Madame Tussaud's and the London Planetarium and you'll also see St Paul's Cathedral, The
Tower of London, Nelson's Column and, of course, Buckingham Palace, where the Queen
lives. If you are unsure of your English, the tour is given in eight languages.
D. KEW GARDENS At Kew we do everything we can to help protect the Earth's
environment and bring new benefits from the plant kingdom. We have a large variety of
plants from all over the world, housed in spectacular glasshouses and beautiful, peaceful
gardens. Every visit to Kew helps to pay for something new - and supports our scientific
efforts to conserve the environment.
E. SHOPPING (I) If you think shopping is fun but have to keep an eye on your bank
balance, London has several colourful and interesting markets which are great to visit, even
if you don't buy anything. Try Covent Garden, with its antique market and attractive
buildings - you'll find lots of unusual jewelry, paintings, interesting objects, and handmade
clothes.
F. SHOPPING (II) For many people London is the place to go shopping. Oxford Street
has every kind of shop from cheap tourist stalls to big department stores. For those with
more expensive tastes, and the bank balance to support it, Bond Street is packed with
designer outlets, e.g., Donna Karan, Versace and Armani. If Bond Street isn't up-market
enough for you, you can always get a taxi to Knightsbridge.
G. The west end
no visit to London would be complete without catching a West End show. Prices range from
£5 to £35 and afternoon performances are always the cheapest. Or you can join the queue
at the half-price ticket booth in Leicester Square - and use the rest of your cash for a meal
afterwards in one of the area's many restaurants
H. MUSEUM OF THE MOVING IMAGE Though it is the youngest of the arts, cinema
has a rich and varied history - and you can see it all here at the MOMI. From the earliest
Lumiere brothers films up to the present day, every aspect of making moving images,
including cartoons, is on show.
