TUTORIAL QUESTIONS

1. A coil takes 2.5A when connected across 200V, 50 Hz mains. The power consumed by the
coil is found to be 400W. Find the inductance and the power factor of the coil.

2. A coil has a resistance of 5Ω and an inductance of 31.8 mH. Calculate the current taken by
the coil and power factor when connected to 200V, 50 Hz supply. If a non-inductive
resistance of 10Ω is then connected in series with coil, calculate the new value of current
and its power factor.
3. An alternating voltage of (176 + j132)V is applied to a circuit and the current in the circuit
is given by (6.6 + j 8.8) A. Determine:
(i) Values of elements of the circuit.
(ii) Power factor of the circuit.
(iii) Power consumed

4. In a circuit, the equations for instantaneous voltage and current are given by 𝑣 =
2𝜋 𝜋
141.4 sin(𝜔𝑡 − ) volts and 𝑖 = 7.07 sin(𝜔𝑡 − 2 ) amp respectively. Determine;

i. impedance and its phase angle

ii. Active power

iii. Instantaneous power at which t=0

5. A voltage e(t) = 100 sin 314t is applied to a series circuit consisting of 10Ω resistance,
0.0318H inductance and a capacitor of 63.6 µF. Determine :
(i) Expression for i(t).
(ii) Phase angle between voltage and current.
(iii) Power factor.
(iv) Active power consumed.

6. A capacitance of 20 µF and a resistance of 100Ω are connected in series across 120 V, 60


Hz mains. Determine the average power expended in the circuit.
7. A resistance 12 Ω, an inductance of 0.15H and a capacitance of 100 µF are connected in
series across a 100 V, 50 Hz supply. Calculate:
(i) The current.
(ii) The phase difference between current and the supply voltage.
(iii) Power consumed.
8. The figure shows two impedances (18 + j24)Ω and (15 – j30) Ω connected in parallel;
across the combination is applied a voltage of 200∠53°8′. Determine:

(i) kVA, kVAR and kW in each branch.


(ii) The power factor of the whole circuit
9. An ac circuit consists of a pure resistance of 10Ω and is connected across an ac supply of
230 V, 50 Hz. Calculate (i) current, (ii) power consumed, (iii) power factor, and (iv) write
down the equations for voltage and current.
10. A voltage of 150 V, 50 Hz is applied to a coil of negligible resistance and inductance 0.2
H. Write the time equation for voltage and current

11. An inductive coil having negligible resistance and 0.1H inductance is connected across
a 200 V, 50 Hz supply. Find (i) inductive reactance, (ii) rms value of current, (iii) power,
(iv) power factor, and (v) equations for voltage and current.

12. A capacitor has a capacitance of 30µF which is connected across a 230 V, 50 Hz


supply. Find (i) capacitive reactance, (ii) rms value of current, (iii) power, (iv) power factor,
and (v) equations for voltage and current.
13. An alternating voltage of 80 + j60 V is applied to a circuit and the current flowing is
4 – j 2 A. Find the (i) impedance, (ii) phase angle, (iii) power factor, and (iv) power
consumed

14. The voltage and current in a circuit are given by V = 150<30° V and I = 2<-15° A. If the
circuit works on a 50 Hz supply, determines impedance, resistance, reactance, power factor
and power loss considering the circuit as a simple series circuit.
15. A voltage v(t) = 177 sin (314t + 10°) is applied to a circuit. It causes a steady-state current
to flow, which is described by i(t) = 14.14 sin (314t – 20°). Determine the power factor and
average power delivered to the circuit.

16. A coil having a resistance of 10Ω and an inductance of 40 mH is connected to a


200 V, 50 Hz supply. Calculate the impedance of the coil, current, power factor and power
consumed.
17. A load of 22 kW operates at 0.8 lagging power factor when connected to a 420 V, single
phase, 50 Hz source. Find (i) current in the load, (ii) power factor angle, (iii) impedance,
(iv) resistance of load, (v) reactance of load, (vi) voltage and current equations.

18. The voltage applied to a circuit is e = 100 sin (t + 30°) and the current flowing in the
circuit is i = 15 sin (t + 60°). Determine impedance, resistance, reactance, power factor
and power.
19. A series circuit consumes 2000 W at 0.5 leading power factor, when connected to 230 V,
50 Hz ac supply. Calculate (i) current, (ii) kVA, and (iii) kVAR

20. A resistor of 20Ω, inductor of 0.05 H and a capacitor of 50µF are connected in series. A
supply voltage 230 V, 50 Hz is connected across the series combination. Calculate the
following:
(i) impedance, (ii) current drawn by the circuit, (iii) phase difference and power factor, and
(iv) active and reactive power consumed by the circuit
21. A circuit consists of a pure inductor, a pure resistor and a capacitor connected in series.
When the circuit is supplied with 100 V, 50 Hz supply, the voltages across inductor and
resistor are 240 V and 90 V respectively. If the circuit takes a 10 A leading current,
calculate
(i) value of inductance, resistance and capacitance, (ii) power factor of the circuit, and
(iii) voltage across the capacitor.
22. A coil having a resistance of 50Ω and an inductance of 0.02H is connected in parallel with
a capacitor of 25µF across a single-phase 200 V, 50 Hz supply. Calculate the current in
coil and capacitance. Calculate also the total current drawn, total pf and total power
consumed by the circuit.

23. Two circuits, the impedances of which are given by Z1 = (10 + j15)Ω and Z2 = (6 – j8)Ω,
are connected in parallel across an ac supply. If the total current supplied is 15A, what is the
power taken by each branch
24. Two circuits, the impedances of which are given by Z1 = (6 + j8)Ω and Z2 = (8 – j6)Ω, are
connected in parallel. If the applied voltage to the combination is 100 V, fnd (i) current and
pf of each branch, (ii) overall current and pf of the combination, and (iii) power consumed
by each impedance.
25. Two impedances of 12 + j 16 Ω and 10 – j 20Ω are connected in parallel across 230 V
supply. Find the kW, kVA, kVAR and power factor of each branch

26. Determine the current in the circuit. Hence, find the power consumed as well as p.f.
27. A coil having a resistance of 7Ω and an inductance of 31·8 mH is connected to
230 V, 50 Hz supply. Calculate (i) the circuit current (ii) phase angle (iii) power factor (iv)
power consumed and (v) voltage drop across resistor and inductor.

28. An inductor coil is connected to a supply of 250 V at 50 Hz and takes a current of 5 A. The
coil dissipates 750 W. Calculate (i) power factor (ii) resistance of coil and (iii) inductance
of coil.
29. A 230 V, 50 Hz a.c. supply is applied to a coil of 0.06 H inductance and 2.5Ω resistance
connected in series with a 6·8 µF capacitor. Calculate (i) impedance (ii) current (iii) phase
angle between current and voltage (iv) power factor and (v) power consumed.
