The SCO is based in the International
Student Support office.
The International Student Support office
provides orientation and ongoing support
for international students at the University
of Adelaide. It ensures all international
students gain a positive and successful
experience here by working closely
with student groups, faculties and the
University administration.

Academic Support
Introductory Academic Program
(IAP)
The Introductory Academic Program is
designed to provide you with a range
of skills necessary to make a smooth
transition to and enhance performance
in your academic program. The IAP is
compulsory for you, and you must arrive
prior to its commencement.
The IAP will be four to six weeks
duration and takes place prior to the
commencement of your academic
program. The first week of the IAP
includes some orientation activities to
help you settle into the University
and Adelaide.

Writing Centre

The Writing Centre presents seminars to
advance academic skills such as reading
and research skills, presentation skills
for tutorials and seminars, essay writing
and report writing skills. You can access
one-on-one mentoring sessions to
develop your academic writing skills.
Learning Guides are also available to help
you develop your skills.
Maths Learning Centre

The Maths Learning Centre (MLC) helps
you develop Maths skills needed in your
courses, including statistics. The MLC
provides bridging courses, seminars,
workshops and online resources. You
can come without an appointment
for one-on-one assistance through
its drop-in service.

program that connects you with peers
from your faculty. All commencing
students will be contacted by our student
Succeed@Adelaide Ambassadors at
important times in their first semester to

Adelaide has a lot to offer for students
with families. As a clean and convenient
city, with lower cost of living than most
capital cities in Australia, and access
to excellent public schools, families of
Australia Awards holders are able to enjoy
their time here.

If you are planning to bring your family
to Adelaide, you are strongly advised to
arrive on your own for at least the first six
months. Once you have settled into your
new living and learning environment and
have found long-term accommodation,
you will be in a better position for your
family to join you in Adelaide.
The Australia Awards Scholarship does
not provide any financial or other support
for your dependants. If you intend to
bring your children to Adelaide, please be
aware that there are costs associated with
childcare and schooling in Adelaide.

at the University’s North Terrace and
Waite campuses, and at many childcare
centres throughout Adelaide.
Education for children of
Australia Awards scholars
Adelaide has a range of excellent public
and private schools. As an Australia
Awards scholar, your children can attend
public schools and pay the same fees as
local students.
It is compulsory for all children in Australia
aged between six and sixteen years to
attend school, with most starting school
at the age of five.
Enrolment Eligibility
Your children have the option of attending
Adelaide’s public or private schools. To be
eligible for this:
• approach International Student Support
for the ‘Letter of Authority’ document
from the Department for Education and
Child Development (DECD)
• verify your student and scholarship
status to DECD.
Intensive Primary
English Course
You can enrol your child in the Intensive
English Language Program (IELP) for
primary aged students or the New
Arrivals Program (NAP) for secondary
aged students.
These programs help students by providing
intensive English language support from
specialist teachers of English as an
Additional Language or dialect; a modified
curriculum for school aged children; activities
with the school and local community; and
bilingual classroom support.
Classes are small and students generally
stay in the program for up to one year until
they are ready to join main stream classes.

 Health insurance
and accommodation
Health Insurance
The Australian Government requires all international
scholars and their families to have health insurance
in Australia through the Overseas Student Health Cover
(OSHC) scheme. The OSHC helps pay for medical care
which you may need when you are studying in Australia.
Your scholarship covers your OSHC (Single). The
University will arrange an OSHC (Single) membership
for you with Allianz Care—the University’s preferred
provider for OSHC. You will receive your OSHC
membership card on arrival.
You can visit the North Terrace campus and meet
Allianz Care staff if you have queries and claims.

If you have dependants on your student visa, you
will be required to purchase the OSHC (Family)
membership by paying the difference between a
single and family cover.

Accommodation
The University of Adelaide provides students access to a
dedicated Accommodation Service. The professional team
of accommodation specialists are available to assist the
university community (24 hours a day, 7 days per week)
to provide general accommodation information, tenancy
support and to apply for a place in University-managed
student accommodation.

The University of Adelaide has a wide range of
accommodation options, including student hostels
and share-housing:
University-managed accommodation
and residential colleges
These options offer many advantages as they are close to
campus and offer furnished rooms with electricity, gas
and water bills included in the rental fee.
Private rentals
If your family is accompanying you to Australia, private
rentals or apartments are generally the most suitable
option. It is advisable for you to arrive in Adelaide alone
first to arrange suitable family accommodation to last the
duration of your program.

Our Accommodation Service can arrange temporary single
accommodation for a week upon your arrival.*
