Arunachal pradesh becomes the 1st state in India to initiate IUCN’s red-listing of orchids
On January 17, 2020, Arunachal Pradesh (AR) has became the 1st State in India to initiate the International Union
for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)’s ‘red listing’ of orchids at the state level after it has inked a memorandum of
understanding (MoU) with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in Itanagar, AR.
Features of the agreement:
i.According to the MoU, the state government of Arunachal Pradesh will cooperate with IUCN and conduct a red-list
evaluation of orchids in the state.
Within 12 months, this project will spread across the state & various workshops on Red List Evaluation will be
conducted by IUCN experts.
ii.The MoU was signed between the Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (PCCF) and Head of Forest Forces (HoFF),
Manmohan Singh Negi and Country Representative, IUCN India, Dr Vivek Saxena.

analysis, field projects, advocacy and education.
IUCN Red List: IUCN’s Red List of Threatened Species is an important indicator of the health of the world’s
biodiversity. This list is serving as a powerful tool to inform and catalyze action for biodiversity conservation and
policy change. The IUCN has estimated that these are complications for protecting natural resources.

New pit viper discovered in Arunachal Pradesh named after Harry Potter Character
The new species of green pit viper discovered in Arunachal Pradesh by a team of researchers was named Salazar’s pit
viper after Salazar Slytherin, a fictional character in J.K Rowling’s book series “Harry Potter”.
Key Points:
i.Venomous snakes which have heat sensing pit organs between the eyes and the nostril.
ii.Trimeresurus Salazar– a fifth variety of reptile to be discovered in Arunachal Pradesh
iii.They belong to genus Trimeresurus Lacépède “charismatic venomous serpents with morphologically as well as
ecologically diverse species”.
iv.The discovery is published by Zeeshan A. AyazMirza of Bengaluru’s National Centre for Biological Science, Harshal
S. Bhosale of Bombay Natural History Society and four others in the April issue of Zoosystematics and Evolution.
v.Two other species of Arunachal pit vipers, India’s fifth brown pit viper with reddish tinge and a natricid burrowing
snake.
Arunachal Pradesh CM Pema Khandu Released the Book Tangams: An Ethnolinguistic Study Of The
Critically Endangered Group of Arunachal Pradesh
The book titled The Tangams: An Ethnolinguistic Study of the Critically Endangered Group of Arunachal Pradesh was
released by Prema Khandu, the Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh. The book is published by Centre for Endangered
Languages(CFEL), Rajiv Gandhi University and Himalayan Publishers, New Delhi.
As per the UNESCO World Atlas of Endangered Languages (2009), Tangam – an oral language that belongs to the Tani
group, under the greater Tibeto-Burman language family is marked ‘critically endangered’.
About Tangams:
• The Tangams community lives in the Kugging Village, Upper Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh.
• They are ethnolinguistic groups within the Adi tribe of Arunachal Pradesh.
• CFEL of Rajiv Gandhi University, Arunachal Pradesh released a report stating: The total population of the
community is 253 and they reside only in that village.
Highlights:
• The CEFL has been functioning since 2016 with a research team comprising scholars from linguistics,
anthropology, folklore, tribal studies and mass communication.
• The book will help future generations of Tangam community, Linguists along with Anthropologists, educators
and policymakers.
• The co-authors of the book are Kaling Dabi, Kombong Darang, Rejhoney Borang, Chera Devi, Rumi Deuri and
jointly edited by Lisa Lomdak and Rejhoney Borang.
• The executive editor of the book is Prof S Simon John, Coordinator of the CFEL.

Andhra Pradesh Retains Top Spot in EODB 2019 During BRAP 2018-19 Ranking
On September 5, 2020, Union Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs Nirmala Sitharaman has virtually
announced the 4th edition of State Business Reform Action Plan (BRAP) Ranking for 2018-19 which was released by
Department of Industrial Promotion and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of commerce and industry. In accordance
with that, Andhra Pradesh (AP) topped the Ease of Doing Business (EODB) ranking 2019, followed by Uttar Pradesh
(UP) and Telangana at 2nd & 3rd place respectively. Among Union Territories (UTs), Delhi bagged the top spot.
• The state of UP improved to reach the 2nd spot from 12th spot in the 2018 ranking while Telangana slipped
from 2nd to 3rd position.
• It should be noted that EODB is a joint initiative by the DPIIT and the World Bank (WB) to improve the overall
business environment in the States.
• Parameters: The BRAP 2018-19 included 180 reform points covering 12 business regulatory areas such as
Access to Information, Single Window System, Labour regulation, Environment, land availability, construction
permit.
• Reason: The reason behind this ranking is to create an element of healthy competition in states in order to
achieve a larger objective of attracting investments and increasing EODB in each State.

About BRAP Ranking:
Initiated in 2015, BRAP ranking represent the EODB in the State with increased transparency, efficiency and
effectiveness of the government regulatory functions vis-a-vis the business enterprises.During the assessment full
weightage was given to the feedback from over 30,000 respondents at the ground level, who gave their opinion about
the effectiveness of the reforms.

Added 544 species to India’s Diversity in 2019: Animal Discoveries 2019 & Plant Discoveries 2019 of ZSI &
BSI Launched by Babul Supriyo
The Scientists have discovered around 544 new species from India during 2019, the list of these new discoveries
were released as two books, Animal Discoveries 2019 and Plant Discoveries 2019 by the Zoological Survey of
India (ZSI) and the Botanical Survey of India (BSI). The ZSI and BSI have been releasing these books since 2007 and
the 2019 list marks the 13th edition of this collection.
On 9th October 2020, Babul Supriyo, Union Minister of State(MoS) for Environment, Forest and Climate Change,
launched these two books at an event organised at the Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Backyard in
Howrah, West Bengal.
Animal Discovery 2019:
i.The Animal discovery 2019 has listed 364 species as new to science and 116 species as first data from India.
ii.Among the discovered species, 294 species are classified as invertebrates and 74 as vertebrates and four species
are fossil species.
iii.The list also includes the species of reptiles, fish and amphibians among the others.
iv.With the addition of these new discoveries, the total species of animals in India is 102161, which accounts around
6.52% of the total species on the earth.
Plant Discoveries 2019:
i.Plant Discoveries 2019 has listed 180 new plant species which includes seed-bearing plants, ferns, fungi, algae and
various species of microbes and 73 new data are found from India
Govt Provide 50% Subsidy for Air Transportation of Fruits, Vegetables from NE, Himalayan states
As a part of “Operation Green Scheme TOP to TOTAL”, the Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) has
announced a 50% air transportation subsidy for 41 notified fruits and vegetables from North East and Himalayan
states to any place in the country.
• In this regard, Airlines will provide the transport subsidy directly to the supplier/ consignor/ consignee/
agent by charging only 50% of the freight charges and will claim the balance 50% from MoFPI as subsidy.
• Apart from above relaxation, all consignment of notified fruits and vegetables irrespective of quantity and
price would be eligible for 50% freight subsidy for air transportation from eligible airports.
List of notified 21 fruits and 20 vegetables eligible for air transportation subsidy:
Fruits: Mango, Banana, Guava, Kiwi, Litchi, Mousambi, Orange, Kinnow, Lime, Lemon, Papaya, Pineapple,
Pomegranate, Jackfruit, Apple, Almond, Aonla, Passion fruit, Pear, Sweet Potato and Chikoo
Vegetables: French beans, Bitter Gourd, Brinjal, Capsicum, Carrot, Cauliflower, Chillies (Green), Okra, Cucumber,
Peas, Garlic, Onion, Potato, Tomato, Large Cardamom, Pumpkin, Ginger, Cabbage, Squash and Turmeric (dry) are also
eligible.
Arunachal Pradesh Records Best Sex Ratio in India: Annual Report from Office of Registrar General & Census
Commissioner
According to Annual Report on ‘Vital Statistics on India based on Civil Registration System 2018’, Arunachal
Pradesh recorded the Highest Sex Ratio at Birth (SRB) in the country with 1,084 females born per thousand males. It
was followed by Nagaland (965) & Mizoram (964), Kerala (963), and Karnataka (957).
The report was released by the Office of the Registrar General & Census Commissioner of India, Ministry of Home
Affairs, Government of India.

ii.The level of registration of births has increased to 89.3% in 2018 from 81.3% in 2009
Researchers Discovered 2 New Species: Hedychium mechukanum & Amomum Arunachalense in Arunachal
Pradesh
Researchers have discovered 2 new species: Hedychium mechukanum and Amomum arunachalense from
Arunachal Pradesh, North East India. The Hedychium mechukanum belongs to the Hedychium genus and Amomum
arunachalense belongs to the Amomum genus.
Hedychium mechukanum:
i.M. Sabu and V.S. Hareesh researchers from Malabar Botanical Garden and Institute of Plant Sciences, Kozhikode
discovered the Hedychium mechukanum, from a location at Quing and Tato near Mechuka valley, Shi Yomi,
Arunachal Pradesh. It is named after Mechuka, a small town on the Indo-China border.
ii.The Hedychium mechukanum found in north east India and China.
iii.This species is closely related to the Hedychium coronarium.
