UNIT 1: PHYSICS
LESSON 4: SPEED, VELOCITY, ACCELERATION

MOTION
- a continuous change in position with reference to a fixed point. A body is in
motion when it is continually changing its position.

Types of Motion

a. Speed – a rate of motion or the distance an object travels in a unit time

b. Velocity – refers to the speed accompanied by direction

SPEED

Formula:

s = d/t
where:

s = speed (m/s)
d = distance (m)
t = time (sec)

Sample Problem

1. A car travels a distance of 110m in 5.21 seconds. Determine the speed of

the car.
Given:

d = 110 m
t = 5.21 sec
s=?

s = d/t
= 110 m/ 5.21 sec
s = 21.11 m/sec
ACTIVITY 1: Solve for the following. Show your solution.

1. A man walks 20 km in 4 hours. Find his speed.

2. A car moves with a speed of 10 m/s. Find the distance covered after 5.0
seconds.
3. A truck travels a distance of 120 m with a speed of 50 m/s. Find the time
travels by the truck.
4. A plane travels 395,000 meters in 9000 seconds. What was its speed?
5. How far can you get away from your little brother with the squirt gun
filled with paint if you can travel at 3 m/s and you have 15s before he
sees you?

VELOCITY

- quantity that designates how fast and in what direction a point is moving.
- The velocity of an object is the rate of change of its position with respect to
a frame of reference, and is a function of time. Velocity is equivalent to a
specification of an object's speed and direction of motion. Wikipedia

Simple Velocity Equation

Formula:
v = d/t
where:
v = velocity (m/s)
d = distance (m)
t = time (s)
Sample Problem:
A car travels at uniform velocity a distance of 100 m, West in 4 seconds. What
is the velocity of the car?
Given:
d = 100 m, West
t=4s
v=?
v = d/t
= 100 m/4 s
= 25 m/s

Velocity after a certain time of acceleration formula

vf = vi + at

where:

vf = final velocity (m/s)

vi = initial velocity (m/s)
a = acceleration (m/s2)
t = time (s)

Sample Problem
1. A car travelling with an initial velocity of 22.4 m/s in 2.55 seconds with
an acceleration of 167 m/s2. Find the final velocity.
Given:
vi = 22.4 m/s
t = 2.55 s
a = 167 m/s2
vf = ?

vf = vi + at
= 22.4 m/s + (167 m/s2)(2.55 s)
= 448.25 m/s
Average Velocity Formula
Formula
vave = vi + vf
2
Where:
vave = average velocity
vi = initial velocity
vf = final velocity

Sample Problem

1. A bird is flying 100m due east at 10m/s and then it turns around and
flying west in 15s at 20m/s. Find the average velocity.

Given:
vave = average velocity
vi = initial velocity
vf = final velocity

vave = vi + vf
2
vave = (10 m/s)(20m/s)
2
= 100 m/s

ACTIVITY 2: Solve for the following. Show your solution.

1. A spider travels across a driveway 3.6 m wide with a speed of 14 cm/s.

How long will it take to cross the driveway?

2. A caterpillar travels across the length of a 2.00 m porch in 6.5 minutes.

What is the average velocity of the caterpillar in m/s?

3. A hiker is at the bottom of a canyon facing the canyon wall closest to her.
She is 280.5 m from the wall and the sound of her voice travels at 340.0
m/s at that location. How long after she shouts will she hear her echo.

4. A car starts from rest and uniformly speeds up. It reaches a speed of 5.0
m/s in 10 seconds. What is the acceleration?

5. A rocket powered sleds are used to test the human response to

acceleration. If a rocket-powered sled is accelerated to a speed of 444 m/s
in 1.83 seconds. What is its acceleration?
