Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

A. Preparatory Activities
Greetings

Good morning, class! Good morning, Ms. Katherine Alvareco!

It is important to listen carefully, watch

attentively and cooperate voluntarily as we
are going to discover about parallel
structure because later on, I will be asking (The students will listen attentively.)
to each one of you some questions, so
fasten your sit belt, relax and feel
comfortable with our lesson for today.
Am I clear?
Yes, ma’am.
B. Review previous lesson

Before we proceed to the lesson, let us

review first about verbs.

What is a verb?
Verb is an action word.
Who can give me an example of a verb?

C. Motivation (Interactive Activity) (Answers may vary)

To get started, please look at the board.

Read the sentence in unison.

“Some of my favorite activities are

playing board games, dancing, and
swimming.”

This sentence contains a list of three words (Do as told)

which are the action words. What are
those words?
Write the three action words on the board.
Who wants to answer?

Very good! The three action words are playing

playing board games, dancing and dancing
swimming. swimming

D. Presentation
Now, take a look at the three words you
write on the board. How are all of these
words similar?

Exactly! All the words in the sentence are

all action words that end in -ing. They are They are all action words that end in -ing.
all in the same form, which makes them
parallel. Today, you’re going to learn
about the use of parallel structures with
words that end in -ing and with infinitives.

Please read today’s objective.

By the end of class today, you’ll be able to (Do as told)

identify sentences with words that end in -
ing and with infinitives that are parallel,
give importance of the parallel structure to
one’s writing and re-write sentences with
words that end in -ing and with infinitives
to have parallel structure.

E. Modelling

To start, let’s take a look at another

sentence and talk about what makes it
parallel.

“The mad scientist likes mixing

chemicals and studying reactions.”

Please read all altogether.

In your warm-up sentence, there were three

words in the sentence that were parallel
because they are all ended with -ing. In
this case, there are only two words in the (Do as told)
sentence. What are the two words?

Yes. What makes this sentence parallel?

Yes. Both words in the sentence are in the

same form, -ing, so the sentence is parallel.

The action words in the sentence don’t mixing and studying

have to end in -ing to be parallel. Take a
look at this sentence. Both words in the sentence end in
-ing.
“The mad scientist likes to mix chemicals
and to study reactions.”

Please read all altogether.

What makes this sentence parallel?

Yes, good job!

Our sentence makes sense whether you use

the -ing form or the infinitive form (to).
The important thing is that you don’t mix
the two different forms in the sentence.

It’s also important to note that when you (Do as told)

use the infinitive form (to), you can drop
To mix and to study are in the same form.
the second (to), like in our second sentence
here.

“The mad scientist likes to mix chemicals

and study reactions.”

Please read altogether.

This is still parallel even though we

dropped the second (to) because study
didn’t change. It’s still in the infinitive
form, just to avoid repetition.

Do you have any questions?

Watch as I correct this sentence to be

parallel. (Do as told)

“The mad scientist was pacing the floor,

watched the clock, and mumbling to
himself.”

This sentence has three action words.

Pacing, watched, and mumbling. None, ma’am.

Pacing and mumbling are both words that

end in -ing, so they match. That’s good.
Watched doesn’t match the other two
though, so that’s the one I need to change.
To make it parallel with the others, I’m
going to change it to watching.

“The mad scientist was pacing the floor,

watching the clock, and mumbling to
himself.”

Now all three action words in the sentence

match.
Remember, for a sentence to be parallel,
the items can be in any form either -ing or
infinitive form (to) as long as they all
match.

How to make the sentence parallel?

Values Integration:
Why do we need to use parallel structure
when writing?

This means that we should make an equal

1. Paired Practice
Now practice with your partner. Rewrite
the sentence using the -ing or the infinitive
form (to) of the verb to a parallel structure.
I will give you two minutes to do it.

the writing grammatically incorrect.
Let’s have a group activity. I will divide
the class into four groups. Each group has
to rewrite the sentence using the -ing or the
infinitive form (to) of the verb to a parallel
structure and mimic the given sentence in
front. I will give you 5 minutes to practice.

Group 1: “I like to clean my bed, eat

breakfast, and taking a bath.

Group 2: “Alex likes to play basketball,

swimming, and to jump ropes.”

Group 4: “The students like to eat snack,
studying, and playing volleyball.”

Since you are all done, you can report

your answer in the front.
