Network standards and protocols

Protocols are set of rules or an agreement that determines the format and transmission of data.
There are formal standards and policies comprised of rules, procedures and formats.

Standards include detailed specification regarding the physical layout, cabling and method used to
access and maintain communications in and between network media.

One of the standardization that is responsible for this are IEEE, it is responsible for developing and
providing networking technology specification on world-wide usage.

Other companies that is mandated to do standardization is International Organization for

standardization (ISO).

The ISO standard

ISO recognized there was a need to create a network model that would help vendors create
networks that would work compatibly and interoperable with other networks. In 1984, the ISO
released their networking model

ISO OSI Reference model
