DC Circuit Analysis

Quiz 1 Lecture
(Resistance & Resistivity)

1. For the network shown below, determine the following:

a. The short circuit I1 and I2.
b. The voltage V1 .
c. The source current IS

Since 6Ω & 10Ω resistors are shorted, their potential is 0V. Therefore,
V1=0

Rewriting the diagram:

Since it’s more easy to solve 𝑉 20𝑉 And lastly, we will solve
𝐼2 = → 𝐼2 =
the network, we can use 𝑅4 5Ω the current source using
Ohm’s Law I2 = 4A Kirchoff’s Current Law
𝑉 20𝑉
𝐼1 = → 𝐼1 = 𝚺𝐼𝑖𝑛 = 𝚺𝐼𝑜𝑢𝑡
𝑅3 4Ω
𝐼𝑠 = 𝐼1 + 𝐼2
I1 = 5A 𝐼𝑠 = 5𝐴 + 4𝐴
Is = 9A
2. Determine the power delivered to the 10Ω load in the figure shown below.

To be able to get the answer, we need to first solve the equivalent resistance of the circuit, the voltage of
node A, B, & C, the total current supply, and the current flowing through the R7. Since R2 & R5 are
parallel and R8 is paralleled to a series of R6 and R7, then

1 1 −1 1 1 −1
𝑅𝐹 = ( 𝑅2 + 𝑅5
) 𝑅𝐵 = ( 𝑅8 + )
𝑅6+𝑅7
1 1 −1 1 1 −1
𝑅𝐹 = ( 12Ω + 12Ω
) 𝑅𝐵 = ( 24 + )
12
2 −1 3 −1
𝑅𝐹 = ( 12Ω ) 𝑅𝐵 = ( 24 )
𝑅𝐹 = 6Ω 𝑅𝐵 = 8Ω

From this diagram, we can now solve the equivalent resistance, total power dissipated, and total
current of the circuit.

−1 2 2
1 1 𝐸 24𝑉
𝑅𝐸𝑞 = 𝑅1 + ( 𝑅𝐹+𝑅3 + 𝑅𝐵+𝑅4
) 𝑃𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 = =
𝑅𝑒𝑞 12Ω
1 1 −1
𝑅𝐸𝑞 = 7Ω + ( 6Ω+4Ω + 2Ω+8Ω
) 𝑃𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 = 48𝑊
1 1 −1 𝐸 24𝑉
𝑅𝐸𝑞 = 7Ω + ( 10Ω + 10Ω
) 𝐼𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 = 𝑅𝑒𝑞
= 12Ω

𝑅𝐸𝑞 = 12Ω 𝐼𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 = 2𝐴

Back to the original circuit:

Using Kirchoff’s Law:

𝑉𝐴 = 𝐸 − 𝐼𝑅1 Since the equivalent 𝑉𝐵 = 𝑉𝐴 − 𝐼𝑅4𝑅4

𝑉𝐴 = 24𝑉 − 2𝐴(7Ω) resistance from 𝑉𝐵 = 10𝑉 − 1𝐴(2Ω)
node A to node F is 10 Ω as
𝑉𝐴 = 24𝑉 − 14𝑉 we solve, 𝑉𝐵 = 10𝑉 − 2𝑉
𝑉𝐴 = 10𝑉 10𝑉 = 10Ω(𝐼𝑅3) 𝑉𝐵 = 8𝑉
𝐼𝑅3 = 1𝐴

8𝑉 2
𝐼24Ω = 24Ω 𝑃10Ω = 𝐼2Ω 𝑅7
𝐼24Ω = 333. 3𝑚𝐴 2
𝑃10Ω = (666. 7𝑚𝐴) 10Ω
𝐼10Ω = 1𝐴 − 333. 3 𝑃10Ω = (0. 667)10Ω
𝐼10Ω = 666. 7𝑚𝐴

𝑃10Ω = 4. 443𝑊
