Learning styles and clinical experiences

Nursing education is vast, and one of the central core competencies is clinical experience.

Learners always participate in coordinated learning in various healthcare environs. Clinical

experiences usually take place in any healthcare setting and are generally supervised by top-level

management. It also requires appropriate learning styles that will help the learners in fully

understanding what to be done in any given medical situation (Ibrahim & Hussein, 2016). I seek

to analyze the appropriate learning styles and explain the results in coming up with a significant

learning experience.

In my clinical experiences, I have been able to utilize both visual and kinesthetic learning

styles. In surgical wards, the use of visual learning is vital as learners tend to absorb and retain

information when accessible in charts, diagrams, and pictures. I used illustrations to show how a

surgical wound is to be bandaged and treated. Learning visually with the use of sight helped the

students fully understand the procedure and ask questions where the need arose. Learners were

able to comprehend the tools and equipment to be used in the surgical wards. I used the

kinesthetic learning style through the use of real and action experience. I presented a patient who

required been bandaged, and the students saw the incident and learned how to do it by

themselves. The hands-on strategy excited the students as a practice is always more enjoyable

than a theory in terms of medical experiences.

The outcome was marvelous, as the students helped me in doing certain activities. This

proved that they fully understood the whole clinical experience. My work was only to facilitate

rather than leading all the way. I gave them tasks to complete, and this indicated how best they

understood. In the end we all achieved the set objectives and goals of the clinical experience.
