Mol concepts
Example: Preparation of Methanol
The Mole

Mole = weight of substance (g) / formula weight (g/mol)

Avogadro’s number = 6.0225 x 1023

Molar mass : the formula mass of a substance in units g per mole

Molarity
Molarity = number of mole of solute/ number of liters of solution

Example:
Calculate the molarity of 750 mL of solution containing 70.0 g of CH3OH?
Normality

Normality = number of equivalent of solute per liter of solution

Example:
Calculate the normality of a solution of 3.61 equivalents H3PO4 in 2.51 L
of solution?

The Concept of pH
pH = -log(H+) pOH = -log(OH-)

[H+] [OH-]
K=
[H2O] H2O H+ + OH-

K [H2O] = Kw= [H+] [OH-] = 1x 10-14

pKw= pH + pOH = 14

Example:
Calculate the pH of a solution having [H+] ion concentration of 1x10-3 M?
