Cite recent natural disasters in the Philippines that caused the following:
Landslide, Storm Surge, Flood, Earthquake, Volcanic Eruption. Discuss the nature and extent
of the disasters.

LANDSLIDE
On april 13,2022 (tuesday) , according to the
report the municipality of leyte was placed
under the state of calamity due to landslides
induced by the heavy downpour dumped by
Tropical Depression Agaton.

Most landslide incidents occurred when the


state weather bureau raised Tropical Cyclone
Warning Signal No. 2 in most parts of Leyte
Island.

Leyte was the hardest hit by the landslide. A landslide in Abuyog town's village of Pilar,
which is surrounded by the sea on one side and a mountain on the other, flattened
almost a hundred houses with mud and fallen trees on April 12, 2022. Nearly every
home in the village was affected.

According to local officials, the death toll in Baybay City and Abuyog town, both in Leyte,
has climbed to 137 people as of April 15, 2022. Many more are missing and feared dead
after Megi, which was the strongest typhoon to hit the country this year, and caused
several days of heavy rains in various parts of the Visayas and northern Mindanao.

STORM SURGE
A category 3 tropical storm named megi, also known in the philippine as tropical storm
“agaton”, was a weak but deadly typhoon that impacted the philippines in april 2022.
Most of the damages caused by storm agaton were concentrated in the visayas region,
where the storm lingered for most of its lifespan. Continuous heavy rains, flash flooding,
and strong winds led to widespread floods and landslides across the two regions.
Heavy rains and strong winds caused major landslides that pushed mud over villages in
leyte, burying 210 houses.

According to NDRRMC the deaths climbed to 214 with 132 missing, and 8 injured. While
the Department of Agriculture estimates 3.27 billion pesos in agricultural damages and
the DPWH estimates worth 1.45 billion in infrastructural damages.

FLOOD

On January 2, 2023, the visayas were mostly


in cagayan valley and also mindanao had
been affected by the trough of low pressure
area (LPA).
According to pagasa, Due to the LPA Trough, the entire Eastern Visayas region had
gloomy skies, scattered rain showers, and thunderstorms. The entire Visayas had
moderate to strong east-northeast winds and rough to very rough seas resulting in 40
areas being flooded.

According to the report, a total of 552,131 people have so far been affected by the
inclement weather resulting in 20 dead, 8 injured, 1 missing, and 80,062 displaced
population.
Around 171.23 million worth of infrastructure have been damaged and the agricultural
sector suffered 27.76 million worth of losses.

EARTHQUAKE
On February 1st, at 6:44 PM Philippine Standard Time (PST), Tuesday, 2023, a powerful
magnitude 6.0 earthquake. Eastern Mindanao's provinces felt the earthquake. A shaking
occurred. has a center 2 kilometers to the southwest of Compostela, Davao de Oro, and
a estimated 17-mile depth kilometers.

VOLCANIC ERUPTION

In January 2020 around 1 pm, the province of Batangas experienced increased


volcanic activity. The taal volcano had been dormant for almost 43 years until it became
active again in January 2020.

According to PHIVOLCS, the activity in the volcano was observed and characterized by
sudden steam emission, the expulsion of plumes in 1km- high accompanied with
volcanic tremors and increased accumulation of ashfall that may have threatened the
areas within the taal volcano.
Total of 566 volcanic tremors were recorded from January 12 up to January 15, 2020,
varying in ranges of magnitude 1.2 to 4.1 and with the level of intensity of I - V. this
prompted the authorities to raise alert level 4 in effect as a bigger eruption.

According to the PNA, as of January 22, 2020, the number of affected families
continues to rise. 71,717 families residing in batangas, cavite, laguna and quezon had
been displaced away from the hazardous 14-km zone.

Based on NDRRMC situational report, the phreatic eruption of taal volcano has caused a
total of P3,215,788,882 for agricultural damage.
