PROBLEM 4.

A gardener uses a 60-N wheelbarrow to transport a 250-N bag

250 N of fertilizer. What force must she exert on each handle?

60 N

0.7 m
0.15 m 0.15 m

SOLUTION

Free-Body Diagram:

SMA = 0: (2F)(1m) - (60 N)(0.15 m) - (250 N)(0.3 m) = 0

F = 42.0 N ◀

PROBLEM 4.3

A 2100-lb tractor is used to lift 900 lb of gravel.

Determine the reaction at each of the two (a) rear wheels
A, (b) front wheels B.

SOLUTION

(a) Rear wheels SMB = 0: +(2100 lb)(40 in.) - (900 lb)(50 in.) + 2 A(60 in.) = 0

A = +325 lb A = 325 lb ◀

(b) Front wheels SMA : - (2100 lb)(20 in.) - (900 lb)(110 in.) - 2B(60 in.) = 0

B = +1175 lb B = 1175 lb ◀

Check: SFy = 0: 2 A + 2 B - 2100 lb - 900 lb = 0

2(325 lb) + 2(1175 lb) - 2100 lb - 900 = 0

0 = 0 (Checks)

PROBLEM 4.7
A hand truck is used to move a compressed-air cylinder.
Knowing that the combined weight of the truck and cylinder is
180 lb, determine (a) the vertical force P that should be applied
to the handle to maintain the cylinder in the position shown, (b)
the corresponding reaction at each of the two wheels.

SOLUTION

(a) Let C be point of intersection of W with the ground.

Horizontal distance from B to C is: Free-Body Diagram:

d = (22 in.)sin30 - (10 in.)cos30

d = 2.3397 in.

From free-body diagram of hand truck,

SM B = 0: W (d ) - P (18 in.) = 0

(180 lb)(2.3397 in.) - P (18 in.) = 0

P = 23.397 lb

P = 23.4 lb ◀

(b) SFy = 0: 2 B + 23.397 lb - 180 lb = 0

or B = 78.3 lb
