CT TEST SET
INTRODUCTION

CT TEST SETS are designed for accurate measurement of Ratio and Phase Error of a current transformer using
comparison method. The standard CT and CT under test are compared , a built in electronic detector detects the
balance point, reading are obtained directly on dials namely phase angle and ratio error.

There consists of a tuned null detector, terminals for standard CT and CT under Test with loading terminals %
Ammeter, % Ratio Error and Phase angle Digital Display, ON OFF switch and reverse polarity indicator. They can
measure ratios of 1A and 5A rated secondary CT’s

Indication aand protection against reverse polarity, over current, STD and X Sec Open and extreme imbalance. The
visual indication of fault type is available on front panel through LED display.

These are robust and self contained housed in beautiful MS cabinet and painted with steel grey paint.

PANEL DESCRIPTION

For testing demonstration in laboratory environment the above panel is used which has following features

1) It consist of input Variac 2 A Single Phase to provide loading to loading transformer

2) The loading transformer provided is a high current output transformer such as welding transformers but
current is limited to 30 A Max.
The input of this transformer is designed at 250 V 2 A and output at 10 V 30 A

3) At last we can see two digramatic representation of current transformer marked as std. and X CT , here
CT’s used are of ratio 30/5 for both std. and X and are inbuilt in the panel. The respective terminals for
Primary and secondary are marked on board

CONNECTION DIAGRAM
OPERATING PROCEDURE

1) Connect the CT’s for STD and X as shown in figure.

2) Connect the Variac 2 A and Current injection Transformer as shown in figure also .
3) Now switch ON the power supply of panel put the 1A/5A switch on 5A position LED will glow for respective
ratio and slowly increase the current upto 5 % to be shown in the meter LCD display on panel at %S and
%X.
4) If the polarity LED Glows start the same procedure by reversing the CT terminals of any one CT.
5) If the %S and %X are not equal this indicates that the CT’s under test and Ref. CT are of different Ratios.
The test CT and Reference CT should be having same nominal CT Ratios and their respective polarities
should be same.
6) The above condition is must for the test .
7) When all above conditions are true at 5% of set current the LCD Display will show ratio and phase errors.
8) Now increase the current upto 10 % and repeat the same procedure, note ratio and phase error
9) Now increase the current upto 15 % and repeat the same procedure note ratio and phase error
10) Now increase the current upto 20 % and repeat the same procedure note ratio and phase error
11) Read the LCD carefully and calculate accordingly, if the ratio error is positive then LED will on on front
panel , and phase angle LED will glow ON if phase is Lagging

OBSERVATION

Secondary Ratio Phase

Primary
S.No % Current Current Error Error Lead/Lag
Current
As Ax (+/-) (min.)
1 5%
2 10%
3 15%
4 20%

PRECAUTIONS

1) Before Switching on the CT set ensure that the current in the primaries of std and X CT is zero
2) To check the polarity, slowly increase the current from 0-10% . In case reverse polarity indicator glows,
interchange the connections of any one CT
3) Do not keep any CT Open else it will burn, and will not attract any warranty issues.
