Bierce also connects life & death, showing how life is brought out more vividly when near to death. people are consciously living on multiple consciousness levels - conscious, unconscious. he makes death a kind of level like these - narrative voice and setting - static quality to setting - memory - tingued with romanticism - narrative voice also brings in concept of patriotism through the military
Narrator/story isn't to be trusted too much. It's the way
Phyllis herself remembers her story years later. Perhaps 90 years old. Follows oral tradition, there is constant doubt that is inserted in a narrative.
