Unit Introduction:

Intro to Advertising: Industry, Culture and Practice aims to introduce you to


your course and its subject specialism as well as to effective learning and
studentship at undergraduate level. It will orientate you to the practices and
knowledge-base needed to understand your discipline and help you to develop
your skills for independent & collaborative learning, reflection and your own
self development. Students come from many diverse educational backgrounds
and a part of this unit will enable to reflect on your own background and how
that shapes the way you approach your course.

This Unit has three core purposes:


1. to introduce you to your discipline in the context of study at a Higher
Education level.
2. to introduce you to learning skills and the requirements of effective
studentship at undergraduate level
3. to orientate you within your course, the College and the University

Emphasis is placed on the skills needed to locate, navigate and communicate


information and ideas effectively and appropriately. You will be introduced to
resources that support your studies. We will also discuss studentship, the
importance of being an engaged and participatory member of the group and
your own personal and professional development.

Teaching and Learning
How the unit will be delivered and assessed
 Lectures/large group learning: the main areas of practice will be covered in a planned
series of tutor-led sessions.
 Workshop & seminar learning: practical sessions that will enable the student to
experiment with a skill or technique relevant to the area of study. Students will be
able to share their understanding with others and obtain guidance from lecturers to
identify solutions to practical problems.
 Creative tutorials: individual assistance is provided by lecturers to assist students
with difficulties in their understanding and practical application of creative skills. This
is important for clarifying the requirements for assessed work.
 Self-directed learning: independent working will be undertaken by the student to
create ideas, campaigns and presentations. This can be undertaken at home or
using college facilities Each Unit you study has one or more assessments. Each of
these assessments has a Brief. This not only sets out clearly what you have to do but
also what we are looking for and how we will set about marking your work.

Tutorials

Year 1: In year one students are working in groups across most of their Units. As such, the
workshop sessions act as group tutorials. Advertising, Theories and Context has tutorial
session built into the course at appropriate moments. In addition, the Course Leader full-
time staff and the Unit Leaders have weekly office hours for 1:1 tutorials.Year 2: In year two
1:1 and group tutorials are built into the running order for each Unit. Practice-research
workshop Units offer ongoing group and 1:1 tutorials across the term. In addition, the
Course Leader full- time staff and the Unit Leaders have weekly office hours for 1:1
tutorials.Year 3: In year three, as the students move into more independent supervised work
on their Dissertation and Big Idea project, each student is assigned a supervisor who offers
tutorial support on an ongoing basis across the year as part of the structure of Units. In
addition, the Course Leader full-time staff and the Unit Leaders have weekly office hours for
1:1 tutorials.

plagiarism, critical thinking, independent learning, reading effectively or preparing for

Student Services
Student Services provides free, confidential advice and support to help students to succeed.
The team includes:
Student Advisers - provide guidance on how to fund study-related costs and helps
International Students with visas and other immigration matters.

Counsellors, Health Advisers and Chaplains - support students’ health and wellbeing by
listening to them and helping them with issues and concerns such as depression, anxiety
and illness, and by providing pastoral and spiritual care.

Disability Advisers and Dyslexia Support Tutors – co-ordinate support for disabled
students, liaise with course teams to remove disabling barriers, arrange accommodated
assessment and provide specialist study skills tuition for dyslexic students.

Your responsibilities as Students:
You are joining a learning community which includes your tutors and your peers. You will
treat all members of the community with respect at all times.

You will attend classes weekly at the times specified in your timetable. Please arrive for
class in good time as it may not be possible to admit latecomers. If for some reason, you
are unable to attend, you should let your tutor know the reason, by email on the morning of
class or before.

Please do not arrange other appointments on teaching days. Please do not arrange any
holidays in the teaching term.

If you are continually absent from class without a reason given, we will write to you asking
for a meeting to discuss your progress.

You will submit work for assessment on time and according to the requirements set out in
your assignment briefs. The work will be that which you have written or produced yourself.
The University considers plagiarism a serious breach of the learning community contract.

You will undertake all reading set for your units/ course. You will also read course
handbooks, unit guides and other supporting information.

You will check your University email and timetable regularly and particularly on the morning
before you leave for class in case any specific instructions for the day have been given. You
will check Moodle regularly.

You will make your tutor or Course Leader aware, as soon as possible, of any issues that
are causing you concern in relation to this unit. These can then be resolved at the earliest
opportunity.

Your progress, enjoyment, and learning experience on this unit is directly related to your
engagement with the work we ask you to undertake, your attendance at class, and the time
you share with your peers in the learning environment.

You must support your peers by taking a full part in learning and assessment activities.
Please do not let them (and yourself) down. Your impact on others’ learning experiences is
significant.

Our responsibilities as Tutors:


We are here to support you to learn and are committed to doing so. We will also signpost
you to other learning and support services provided by the College and University. You
must however supply the ‘will to learn’ as we cannot learn for you.

We will deliver the unit outlined in this guide and as timetabled. We will be available to start
the timetabled sessions on time.

If a tutor is unable to attend class for an urgent reason, they will inform you by email either
the night before or on the morning of class of the alternative arrangements that are being
made.

We will provide you with written feedback online within three weeks of any summative
assessment, and formative verbal feedback on several occasions throughout the unit.

We will answer questions related to your study and directed to your unit tutor or Course
Leader at the earliest opportunity. You may also request a one to one appointment with your
tutor who will normally see you during their published office hours.

We will meet with you for a personal development review as outlined in your course tutorial
plan.

We will treat you with respect and listen to your feedback.
