How to Make Ecoprints

Ecoprint is the art of making or printing natural materials in a medium. The

media used can be in the form of cloth, leather, or souvenir items, such as:
mugs, tissue holders, and others. Apart from fashion, ecoprints are also being
developed by many crafters who also produce works that are no less beautiful.
There are various kinds of ecoprint materials, namely: leaves, flowers, stems,
and roots.
Even though it only prints leaves, ecoprint is not as easy as tracing leaves on
paper. Because not all media, especially fabrics, can be made for ecoprint. So a
good fabric for ecoprint is one that is easy to absorb, such as: cotton, silk, or
canvas. Cotton has various types. There are prima cotton, primisima, rayon, and
so on.
Prima cotton is different from primisima cotton. If primisima the cloth is
smoother and feels thinner. While rayon has a rather thick nature and the fabric
falls. Rayon cotton is suitable for both robes and skirts. Meanwhile, for shirts or
outerwear, it is more suitable to use promisima cotton.

Tutorial on Making Ecoprints

1.Scouring On New Fabrics
The first is that we have to do scouring on the new fabric from the store.
Scouring is the process of cleaning or removing the remaining dirt from
the cloth. The method is: soak the cloth in TRO solution, then rub it for a
while, then rinse it clean. And dry in the sun.

2.Fabric Mordanting
This is the second step. Mordanting has the goal of opening the pores in
the fabric fibers, so that the dyes from plants will easily be
absorbed/adhered to the fabric.

Mordant Material:
 200-250 gram cloth that has been scoured
 Alum / alum 50 grams
 75 ml of food vinegar/meatball vinegar, or 40 ml of
industrial vinegar
 Warm water (75-80°C) 1,500 ml

How To Make Mordants:

Make a Mordant solution: Mix Alum and vinegar into 1,500 ml of
warm water, stir well, until dissolved. Soak the cloth in the
mordant solution overnight. After that rinse, and dry in the sun to
dry. If you want to use it directly for ecoprint, you can.
3.Ecoprint process
Prepare teak leaves, kenikir, truja, lanang leaves. Why these leaves?
Because these leaves can be used directly without having to do treament
on the leaves. For other leaves, sometimes a treament must be carried out
first, because if not, the traces of the leaves will not be visible.
Stretch the plastic to the size of the cloth or a little wider. Then spread the
cloth that has been dimordant in wet conditions. If it's dry, dip it in water

for a while and then squeeze it until no water drips anymore.

Arrange the leaves on the surface of the cloth. For arranging leaves,
actually there is no rule that it should be like this or that way, it's up to
you what kind of motif you want to make. Try to organize it so that
nothing piles up. Because if something has accumulated, then the traces
of the leaves are not visible.
After all the leaves are arranged, the next step is to cover with plastic.
Then roll/fold it neatly into small pieces so that it's easy to steam it. After
being folded/rolled up, then tied tightly and neatly so that the leaves stick
perfectly to the cloth.
Then the rolled cloth is steamed for 2 hours. After the new cold opened,
then aerated to dry.

Leave it dry for at least 5 days, then rinse the cloth with clean water, then
hang it in the sun to dry. Fixation process can be done

4.Fixation Process
Fixation on ecoprint is a process of strengthening /locking the color. The
solution used is alum, lime, or tunjung. These three materials have their
own advantages. If alum will give a lighter or brighter color effect, while
chalk tends to be a bit darker. While tunjung gives an older effect than
lime. If you want to know the difference, try it yourself...
Note: For ecoprint results, you should not wash it using detergent, but
use lerak or shampoo. This is to prevent the color of the fabric from fading
quickly.
