CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
A. BACKGROUND
In this paper will analyze about intrinsic and extrinsic unsure especially
use method Historical Biographical Approach. Intrinsic unsure is
including about plot, setting, characterization, theme, point of view and to
analysis extrinsic we can use some methods but In this paper just analyze
use Historical and Biographical Approach. This is paper is made to
analysis Intrinsic and Extrinsic Elements of novel Yokohama, California
“ Tomorrow is coming, Children”.

B.THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
Novel is prose story telling with a great amount of detail on every page, and
usually reveals human values (John Peck and Martin Coyle 1986 : 102).
Intrinsic elements in a novel are the elements that directly build the story. The
intrinsic elements of a novel are theme, characterization, plot, point of view, style,
and settings (Nurgiyantoro (2003:23)
Character is an individual within a literary work (James and Jefrey 1980 : 23).
Setting is used to identify and establish the time, place and mood of the events of
the story. It basically helps in establishing where and when and under what
circumstances the story is taking place (Literary Device : 2011)

BY TOSHIO MORI
A. ASSUMPTION
Novel of Yokohama, California has many chapters, but in this paper will use
chapter one to be analyzed the Intrinsic and extrinsic element and also value of
multiculturalism in that novel. This novel will show how the intrinsic, extrinsic
and value of multiculturalism will have relation. The chapter that will be analyzed
because in here told about people from Japan came to America and live in
California and before it they live in San Francisco and they meet American people
meet the Japanese and they can live as a neighbor. They came to visit each other
of their house that show if there is value of multiculturalism in that chapter. That
also can be happen because one of character has good personality or good
characterization that will be proved in this paper. This also will analyze about the
extrinsic element especially use Historical and Biographical Approach that will
show if the story is has relation with the writer, and it can called if the writer make

The quotation show that Annabelle is kind hearted because she accept her
neighbor to come to her house, and although she can speak English , she is very

That quotation is show that Annabelle is ambitious, she speaks full of ambitious,

Exposition in this novel occures when Annabele in Japan when Annabele had

Complication accoures when Annabele went to Kobe with her brother to take her
till the boat when she departed from Japan to San Fransisco. It is because she was
looking ahead, thinking of her husband and San Fransisco. Then finally she kept
going to the San Fransisco, America. In the middle of the way, she’ve been
thinking about what was her friend said when she will leaves Japan.
3. Crisis
tells her life story to her grandchildren while in a World War II camp including
her immigration from Japan to “San Francisco, my dream city.” That finally she
achieved her dream to move to San Fransisco. She looked exicted cause finally
she come to her dream city with people around her in the deck was full of eager

Falling action accoures when Annabele decided to help her friend who is also a

Resolution accoures when Annabele finished telling her story to his grandson
Jhony. She, until that moment, was still not able to speak English very well in
America. However, Annabele realized she achieved her dream. She reached her
dream city of San Francisco, the city that she dreamed of until now she is old as a
grandma, she had never met again with her brother and sister in Japan that they
already passed away. She realized her fate is in America. Her life is in America.
The author use first point of view, because he use I in every part. I is refer to
character Annabele
Toshio Mori was born on March 3, 1910, in Oakland, California, third of four
sons of Issei Yoshi and Hidekichi Mori of Hiroshima Pefecture. Yokohama is late
for publication in 1942. The book contains many chapters and every chapter is a
short story. One of the short story is Tomorrow is Coming, Children. The story

recounts her life story to her grandchildren. That is same like in the story where
grandmother tell about her story as Annabelle to her grandchildren. Toshio Mori
take the theme of the story based on his true life. That proved by there are same
many place, feeling, event with the Toshio’s life. When we read the story and
there sentence :

The quotation reflect from Toshio Mori Story because he like write the other
culture in that story tell about two culture between Japanese and American.
Toshio Mori also called people that never give up about something , that also
people forbid for it. She doen’t change her decision although many people don’t

CONCLUSION
There are many science that I can get from this novel. I became know about
Intrinsic and extrinsic element of novel and value of multiculturalism. There are
some kinds of Intrinsic element, There are Plot , Setting , Theme , Point of view ,
very give us lesson because the character Annabelle and her husband can live
under pressure, and the novel give example of how people can survive in bad
condition, because that reflect from Toshio Mori that also give me knowledge
about author that has high spirit and never give up however his condition, and the
important thing is about value of multiculturalism is where two culture that can
live together and accept each other. That can be applied in my daily life to respect
