3
B.THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

Literature is a permanent expression in words of some thoughts or feeling or idea

about life and the world ( Rees, 1973:9). Literature also the writing or the study of
books, valued as works of art (drama, fiction, essay, poetry, biography, contrasted
with technical books and journalism). The main generic of literature today is
poetry, drama and the novel. The novel as a genre of fiction can be defined as : “a
work of prose finction, usually an extended narrative that tells a story or uses
incidents to dramatize human experience and individual characters”(Grambs,
1925: 93).

Novel is prose story telling with a great amount of detail on every page, and
usually reveals human values (John Peck and Martin Coyle 1986 : 102).

Intrinsic elements in a novel are the elements that directly build the story. The
intrinsic elements of a novel are theme, characterization, plot, point of view, style,
and settings (Nurgiyantoro (2003:23)

Character is an individual within a literary work (James and Jefrey 1980 : 23).

Characterization is the process by which an author creates, developes and

presents a character (James and Jefrey 1980 : 23 )

Setting is used to identify and establish the time, place and mood of the events of
the story. It basically helps in establishing where and when and under what
circumstances the story is taking place (Literary Device : 2011)

Plot is The patterned arrangement of the events in a narrative or play. It contens

by exposition, complication, crisis, falling action, anti climax, and resolution
(James and Jefrey 1980 : 13 ).

CHAPTER II

ANALYSIS INTRINSIC AND EXTRINSIC ELEMENT OF

NOVEL YOKOHAMA, CALIFORNIA

“ TOMORROW IS COMING, CHILDREN”

BY TOSHIO MORI

A. ASSUMPTION

Novel of Yokohama, California has many chapters, but in this paper will use

chapter one to be analyzed the Intrinsic and extrinsic element and also value of

multiculturalism in that novel. This novel will show how the intrinsic, extrinsic

and value of multiculturalism will have relation. The chapter that will be analyzed

is Tomorrow is coming, Children. According my assumption the title of

Tomorrow is coming children will show about many values of multiculturalism,

because in here told about people from Japan came to America and live in

California and before it they live in San Francisco and they meet American people

meet the Japanese and they can live as a neighbor. They came to visit each other

of their house that show if there is value of multiculturalism in that chapter. That

also can be happen because one of character has good personality or good

characterization that will be proved in this paper. This also will analyze about the

extrinsic element especially use Historical and Biographical Approach that will

show if the story is has relation with the writer, and it can called if the writer make

this story based on his true live.

5
B.ANALYSIS

B.1 ANALYSIS INTRINSIC

B.1.1 ANALYSIS CHARACTER AND CHARACTERIZATION

Character

Annabele

Annabele is the main character and writer of this memoir. Kind-hearted

1. Kind hearted

“Please come and talk with my American wife. She is lonely and has no friend

here”

“I am lonely, too, but I cannot speak English. When your American wife starts

talking, Iam in trouble.”

“Talk? You don’t have to talk. My wife will understand. Please do not be afraid.”

(Mori, 1949: 19)

The quotation show that Annabelle is kind hearted because she accept her

neighbor to come to her house, and although she can speak English , she is very

kind to her neighbor.

6
2. Ambitious

“America!” they cried, “America is on the other side of the world! You will be in

a strange country. You cannot read or write their language. What will you do?” I

smiled, and in my dreams I saw the San Francisco. (Mori, 1949: 15)

That quotation is show that Annabelle is ambitious, she speaks full of ambitious,

she doesn’t afraid of whatever challenge that will came when she try to reach her

dream. This method also can be called Characterization through Dialogue.

One day the American lady came, and we had tea. We drank silently and smiled.

All the time I was hoping she would not begin talking. She liked my tea and cakes,

I could tell. She talked of simple things so that I would grasp a little of it. Se

would pick up her teacup and ask….” (Mori, 1949: 19)

The quotation by Annabele’s narrator explains that Annabele helped her new

friend as a white America. Annabele accompanied her throughout the day from

day to day, but they do not communicate with their language, they simply

accompany each other without speaking, and just smiled as their sign language.

7
2. Grandpa

Grandpa is Annabele husband who is unnamed here.

1. Firm and Care

“Never wear this thing again” he told Annabele. “You look like a foreigner,” he

said. “You must dress like an American You belong here.” (Mori, 1949: 17)

That quotation show if grandpa is firm person, he obviously forbidden his wife to

use something that invite the suspect from other people but that show the care of

husband to wife, because he afraid something will happen to his wife

2. Perfectionist

He gave me a dress. A coat, a hat, stockings, and shoes, my first American

clothes…” (Mori, 1949: 17)

This quotation that grandpa is perfectionist , because he serves whatever things

that should be wore by his wife, to make the wife use cloth perfectly, and she

looks like American . This method can be called characterization by author,

because the author describe it.

8
B.1.2 ANALYSIS SETTING

1. Setting as background for action

Setting as background for action in this autobiographical novel begins when

Annabele lived in Japan then she decide to move to California, America.

1. Japan

Setting of place as the background for the action in this novel is in Japan. When

Annabele had decided to immigrant to California. This quotation will prove it

Long ago, children, I lived in a country called Japan… (Mori, 1949: 17)

2. San Francisco

“This is San Francisco . My San Francisco.”, I murmured to myself. (Mori, 1949:

18)

The quotation obviously show the setting is in the San Francisco.

3. Oakland, California

But we moved out of San Francisco. We came across the Bay, and after much

moving your grandpa bought a bathhouse in Oakland. And that was there your

daddy was born.

9
Annabele and her husband (grandpa) go up to the attic of Oakland home. They

moved out of San Fransisco.

2. Setting as antagonist

1. San Fransisco

This was different from what I had dreamed, and I was speechless. I had expected

to see the green hill of Japan and the sloping houses duplicated here (Mori, 1949:

18)

The quotation show that San Francisco is place that she doesn’t think before, and

that became antagonist because that place make her miss about Japan and she has

expected is San Francisco look like Japan.

B.1.3 ANALYSIS PLOT

1. Exposition

Exposition in this novel occures when Annabele in Japan when Annabele had

decided to immigrant to California. Here is the place for her when she finally

decide to move even some village people try to make her dont go to another land

in the time of world war II and everybody so sad cause finally she decide to leave

Japan. While on the surface a warm and fuzzy immigration tale blunting the

impact of the wartime imprisonment.

10
2. Complication

Complication accoures when Annabele went to Kobe with her brother to take her

till the boat when she departed from Japan to San Fransisco. It is because she was

looking ahead, thinking of her husband and San Fransisco. Then finally she kept

going to the San Fransisco, America. In the middle of the way, she’ve been

thinking about what was her friend said when she will leaves Japan.

3. Crisis

Crisis occures when Annabele arrived in San Fransisco. Annabele as a narrator

tells her life story to her grandchildren while in a World War II camp including

her immigration from Japan to “San Francisco, my dream city.” That finally she

achieved her dream to move to San Fransisco. She looked exicted cause finally

she come to her dream city with people around her in the deck was full of eager

faces. The following quotations present clear evidences of the statement before :

4. Falling Action

Falling action accoures when Annabele decided to help her friend who is also a

Japanese who worked as an acrobatic in California. She helped her friend to

accompany his white American wife when she lived in Oakland, California. Here

is look the role of Annabele as a kind-hearted girl. She help lonely wife at home.

Cause this American wife had to wait her husband got home from work. Annabele

accompanied her throughout the day from day to day. but they do not

11
communicate with their language, they simply accompany each other without

talking she doesn’t need to be afraid cause of the language problem

5. Resolution

Resolution accoures when Annabele finished telling her story to his grandson

Jhony. She, until that moment, was still not able to speak English very well in

America. However, Annabele realized she achieved her dream. She reached her

dream city of San Francisco, the city that she dreamed of until now she is old as a

grandma, she had never met again with her brother and sister in Japan that they

already passed away. She realized her fate is in America. Her life is in America.

She belong in America.

B.1.4 ANALYSIS POINT OF VIEW

The author use first point of view, because he use I in every part. I is refer to

Grandmother as a major character here. She is grandmother from the minor

character Annabele

B.2.1 ANALYSIS USE HISTORICAL AND BIOGRAPHICAL APPROACH

Toshio Mori was born on March 3, 1910, in Oakland, California, third of four

sons of Issei Yoshi and Hidekichi Mori of Hiroshima Pefecture. Yokohama is late

for publication in 1942. The book contains many chapters and every chapter is a

short story. One of the short story is Tomorrow is Coming, Children. The story

was written when Mori impressioned in Topaz. An Elderly Issei grandmother

12
recounts her life story to her grandchildren. That is same like in the story where

grandmother tell about her story as Annabelle to her grandchildren. Toshio Mori

take the theme of the story based on his true life. That proved by there are same

many place, feeling, event with the Toshio’s life. When we read the story and

there sentence :

“ Your grandpa was already in California, earning morning money for my boat

ticket.”.. (Mori, 1949: 15)

The quotation describe that grandmother tell the story to grandchildren. The

setting of the story is in Japan, California, San Francisco. This also has proved in

analysis setting. That also based on Mori’s life, because Mori’s family run a

bathhouse for local Japanese then operated a nursery, and Toshio was born in

California, Oakland. It reflect from Toshio Mori’s life.

“ Long ago, Children, I lived in a country called Japan.”…. (Mori, 1949: 15)

“We came across the Bay, and after much saving your grandpa bought a

bathhouse in Oakland.” (Mori, 1949: 18)..

Both of quotation show where the story happen, and the interesting thing “

bathhouse” where the character live and it also place where Mori’s live. That

obviously proved that the story has many similarity with Mori’s life. Beside that

he relocated in 1943 from San Leandro to the Tanforan, California. The story tell

about people that came to America to meet her husband. The storu describe how

grandma can survive in a boat, that can be inspired by the Mori when he was in

Topez, and he look full hope like the period where he is. In the story he told if the

13
grandma live in Oakland and that same with by 1949 Mori has returned to

Oakland to live.

“ It was on account of little neighbor, the white Americsn wife of a Japanese

acrobat.” .”.. (Mori, 1949: 19)

The quotation reflect from Toshio Mori Story because he like write the other

culture in that story tell about two culture between Japanese and American.

Toshio Mori also called people that never give up about something , that also

reflect in the story when Annabelle choose to go to California although many

people forbid for it. She doen’t change her decision although many people don’t

agree with her decision.

“ How can I ever forget ? My sister country and my adopted land at war.”..

The quotation also reflect from Toshio’s life because he write the story when the

World War II happen, between America and Japan.

14
B.3 Value of Multiculturalism

The story of Yokohama, California especially chapter one with the title Tomorrow

is Coming, Children contain many things that relate with culture or

multiculturalism, and in the story give the example how the different culture can

live without the racism.

In the story the multiculturalism is between the people from Japan that can’t be

speak English with The American girl that live near her house or they are

neighbor, although there are so many difference they can live together, and their

relationship is very good. The visit house each other, and share food or drink each

other, and give their respond without speaking.

Some quotation that prove it are :

““ It was on account of little neighbor, the white Americsn wife of a Japanese

acrobat.” .”.. (Mori, 1949: 19)

One day the American lady came , and we had a tea. We drank silently and

smiled.. “ (Mori, 1949: 19)

15
This value can be application in our daily live, where people should be understand

with other people that has different culture. We can life together with people that

has different culture goodly.

16
CHAPTER III

CONCLUSION
There are many science that I can get from this novel. I became know about

Intrinsic and extrinsic element of novel and value of multiculturalism. There are

some kinds of Intrinsic element, There are Plot , Setting , Theme , Point of view ,

Characterization .After that I can more understand about Historical and

Biographical Approach. I can learn about value of multiculturalism. The novel is

very give us lesson because the character Annabelle and her husband can live

under pressure, and the novel give example of how people can survive in bad

condition, because that reflect from Toshio Mori that also give me knowledge

about author that has high spirit and never give up however his condition, and the

important thing is about value of multiculturalism is where two culture that can

live together and accept each other. That can be applied in my daily life to respect

other people that has different culture with me.
