QUESTION NO. 1
HOW IMPORTANT ARE PEER GROUPS TO
SOCIALIZATION? IN WHAT WAYS DO THEY INFLUENCE
INDIVIDUALS THROUGHOUT THEIR LIFE COURSE?

According to Investopedia, peer groups refer to a group of individuals or

companies that share similar characteristics. These characteristics may be age,
education, ethnic background, size, industry, or sector. One of the most enticing
characteristics of peer groups is the similarity of the member’s characters.
According to Neel Raman, a good peer group shares the same characteristics,
goals, and interests as each other. Peer groups are essential in socialization
because they can help you determine a group where you can grow and improve.
These peer groups have different types because groups have other goals. The
social learning theory tries to understand the connection between socialization.

For example, there is an organization named ‘Smile Train.’

The Smile Train Organization is a peer group that has the goal of serving and
helping babies, as well as children, born with clefts. The term peer group refers to
a group of individuals or companies with similar characteristics. These
characteristics may be age, education, ethnic background, size, industry, or sector.
Their goal is to help children in need with a cleft. Moreover, the surgeons in this
peer group are local medical professionals and hospitals. In this particular group,
members of this organization might have an experience with children with a cleft;
they might be family members. If you are a new member but have no personal
relationship with children with cleft, and the crack goal is to help children, would it
still be the right group for you? It would still be the right group for you. Members
of peer groups tend to influence individuals by correlating with each other. If your
purpose is to help other people, the member of peer groups will be able to provide
you with a sense of. An organization such as Smile Train provides its member and
contributors with a purpose. Helping others is one of the most influential things
that will help you stick to a particular organization. Socialization within peer
groups is vital in disseminating information.
nd self-development. These peer groups play a significant role in proving that
particular theory. As we grow, we are forced to choose a specific group that
practices our intentions in life.

HOW IMPORTANT ARE PEER GROUPS TO
SOCIALIZATION? IN WHAT WAYS DO THEY INFLUENCE
INDIVIDUALS THROUGHOUT THEIR LIFE COURSE?

Your life course within the organization, such as ‘Smile Train, ’

influences and determine your life path. Many people dedicate their time
to providing help to children with cleft. You will learn a lot from
particular peer group members through socialization. With that, factors
such as ethnicity, race, and background will not bother you. Helping is
going to be your language. What I was saying was the full effect of
socialization in our life. Different peer groups will either give you your
purpose or end; you must choose the right ones.

HAVE YOU EVER EXPERIENCED ROLE STRAIN OR ROLE
CONFLICT? DESCRIBE THE DIFFERENT ROLES AND HOW
THEY WERE STRAINED OR CONFLICTED. HOW DID YOU
RESOLVE THIS?

As a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, I experienced role strain or role

conflict constantly. Simply Psychology defines role conflict as when an individual
battles her societal role. Our role in society could be in different ways. Moreover,
these roles could overlap and can be done by only one person. Role conflict happens
when an individual cannot perform their function correctly. An example of a role in
society is being a parent.
Furthermore, the role conflict that I have was the following:
As a non-binary, I identify myself as someone who can explore the community
without boundaries. However, the LGBTQIA+ community often has this perception
that when you are non-binary, you have to be masculine. The role here is to be
male. With this idea, I tend to fake my masculinity so the community will accept me.
When you are feminine, people will conclude that you are gay. These claims were
further proven by Francisco J, Sanchez stating, “Professional psychologists who
work with gay men have noted that traditional masculine ideals play a prominent
role in the gay community whereby some endorse these traditional ideals and
stigmatize effeminate behavior by other gay men.” I fight these stigmas by being
myself. I have realized that one of the things that can help accept a non-binary
person with femininity is living. When you stand by, being an example is an ideal
type of rallying.
As a student and son, I tend to have conflicts between household chores and
studying. Sometimes, when I get too focused on looking, I tend to forego my
assignment in the house. I am responsible for cleaning and doing the laundry in our
home. Though my parents like to tell me that I should focus on studying, I do not
want to get tired because they are getting older. My parent had me when they
were about to enter their 40s, so they are a little old now. As a son, I want them
to live the rest of their life the best way possible. I do not want them to feel like I
am only a child who does well in studying but doesn’t know anything in real life. It
might sound like I want to impress my parents, but that is the reality of life. On
the other hand, when I get to clean the house or do some laundry, I tend to forego
studying. Sometimes, I get a little behind in my study schedule because I have to
sacrifice time to help my parents. As a son, I also spend time with my family.
Though I do not consider it a waste of time, spending time with my family could
take a little of my time for studying.

QUESTION NO. 1
WHEN HAVE YOU EXPERIENCED CULTURAL DIFFERENCES?
THINK ABOUT A SETTING WHERE YOU HAVE
WORKED/INTERACTED WITH DIFFERENT PEOPLE FROM VARIOUS
BACKGROUNDS. THESE DIFFERING BACKGROUNDS MAY HAVE
BEEN ABOUT NATIONALITY BUT ALSO SOCIAL CLASS
DIFFERENCES, RELIGIOUS DIFFERENCES, OR OTHER FEATURES,
SUCH AS ETHNICITY. HOW DID CULTURAL DIFFERENCES AND
DIFFERENT WAYS OF DOING THINGS ACCORDING TO CULTURE
BECOME VISIBLE? LIST SOME OF THESE.

Here are some of the settings in which I have worked/interacted with different
people from a range of backgrounds:
Here at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines – Main Campus, I was
able to meet people with different ranges of backgrounds. Due to our diversity, I
met people from other parts of our country. One example is my Czarina; she was
from Rizal, while I was from Cabanatuan City. It is impressive to note how people
from different places can meet at our school.
When I was in Grade 8, we had a collection in Bacao, Palayan City. Bacao is
a sitio where Aetas populate it as it is a place where it fits them. Bacao has great
mountain views and a cold ‘batis.’ This place is an excellent place for shifting your
ideas and mind. During our recollection, we were able to talk with Aetas. I asked
them how hard it is to live in the mountains. They said that living in the mountains
wasn’t a challenge because they have a lot of natural resources that can help them
keep on living. Working with the Aetas, I have realized that the differences are
easily distinguishable by speaking. Though they live where Tagalog is constantly
being used, they said to have their languages, which I think is terrific. The
differences between backgrounds became visible because they were doing what
they were used to while we were doing what we were taught. For example, they
drink the water of the ‘batis’ while some of my classmates think it is dirty because
they come from the top of the mountains. Remember, we were just in eighth grade.

I have also experienced religious differences. When I was in Grade 5, Seventh-Day

Adventist pastors conducted a one-month bible study here in our community. They
completed their bible study successfully despite some parents prohibiting their
children from attending. They think these people were Satanist groups and will lead
us to a different path. However, some changed their mind because they started to
believe that the pastors had pure intentions. I think it is typical for people to
react negatively when new ideas are implemented. An example is the
implementation of heliocentrism. Going back, I have heard that these pastors were
prohibited from eating pork and meat. Their purpose in life is to live according to
the scriptures. Here, we can see that religious differences show a visible sign of
distinction. It could also prove how religious differences could play a significant
role in influencing the activity of a particular group. On the other hand, these
pastors were great and treated me with the utmost respect. Despite being a kid,
they helped me understand the Bible, such as the Ten Commandments, Sabbath
Day, and the story of David and Goliath. The differences in following the scripture
are what makes us different. In my religion, which is the Roman Catholic, we can
do things that we love as long we do not go against God’s commandments. However,
pastors of Seventh Day Adventists have an additional such as not eating a slice of
pork meat.
“How did cultural differences and different ways of doing things according to
culture become visible?” said the additional question. The cultural differences and
different ways of doing things according to culture became visible because of the
people doing it. The difference became visible because people followed their roles in
their particular society. As we all know, the community plays a significant role in
influencing people’s ideas and actions. It was mentioned a lot during our discussion
in Sociology.
