Reaction Rate Exercise

1. A reaction proceeds twice as fast every time the temperature is increased by 10

degrees Celsius. If the reaction rate at 25 degrees Celsius is y Ms¯¹ , what is the
reaction rate at 55 degrees Celsius?
2. The rate of reaction is 2 times faster every time the temperature is increased by 10
degrees Celsius. A chemical reaction at 30 degrees Celsius lasts for 48 minutes. How
long does the reaction take if the temperature is increased by 60 degrees Celsius?
3. The reaction takes place 3 times faster for every 20 degree Celsius increase in
temperature. The reaction carried out at 50 degree Celsius takes 27 minutes to
produce a number of products. How long will it take if the reaction is carried out at
the following temperatures :
a.) Temperature 30 degrees Celsius
b.) Temperature 90 degrees Celsius

Answer
1. Δv = 2
ΔT = 10⁰C
T1 = 25⁰C
V1 = x Ms¯¹
T2 = 55⁰C

V2 = ...?

V2 = V1 x (Δv)^n
n = T2-T1 : ΔT
n = 55⁰C-25⁰C : 10⁰C = 3
V2 = y x (2)³
V2 = y x 8
V2 = 8y

2. Δv = 2
ΔT = 10⁰C
T1 = 30⁰C
t1 = 48 minutes
T2 = 60⁰C

t2 = ...?

t2 = t1 (1/Δv)^n
n = T2-T1 : ΔT
n = 60⁰C - 30⁰C : 10⁰C => 3
t2 = 48 (½)³
t2 = 48 x 1/8
t2 = 6 minutes

3. Δv = 3
ΔT = 20⁰C
T1 = 50⁰C
t1 = 27 minutes

a.) T2 = 30⁰C
t2 = ...?
t2 = t1 (1/Δv)^n
n = T2-T1 : ΔT
n = 30⁰C-50⁰C : 20⁰C => -20⁰C : 20⁰C => -1
t2 = 27 (1/3)¯¹
t2 = 27 x 3
t2 = 81 minutes

b.) T3 = 90⁰C
t3 = ...?
t3 = t1 (1/Δv)^n
n = T3-T1 : ΔT
n = 90⁰C-50⁰C : 20⁰C => 40⁰C : 20⁰C => 2
t3 = 27 (1/3)²
t3 = 27 x 1/9
t3 = 3 minutes
