Only National Highways are used in the Golden Quadrilateral. The four legs of this route consist of the
following National Highways (new numbering system):
• Delhi–Kolkata: NH 19
• Delhi–Mumbai–Chennai: NH 48
• Kolkata–Chennai: NH 16
1.3. Activities:
Based on the requirements from Toyota, Zero-sum has conducted the network survey on the chosen route
i.e. The Golden Quadrilateral route of India to gather the network information under the following 2
activities.
Activity 1 Network Survey: Activity 1 involved the collection of network carrier information of the three
major carriers in India for Airtel, Vodafone and Jio across the Golden Quadrilateral route. The information
collected includes the network details of the respective 4G/3G/2G networks of the respective carriers. To
collect the network information on the chosen route, Zero-sum has done survey activity across the route
with 14 devices capturing CSV and .KML data. Details of the information gathered are mentioned in
Section 3 below.
Activity 2 Data Collation and processing: Activity 2 involves the collation of all the network information
gathered for Airtel, Vodafone and Jio, providing a daily summary of the route covered and thereafter
preparing a report on the information gathered to Toyota.
2. Scope of work:
To undertake a network survey test across India, Zero-Sum has undertaken the following functions and
arranged the following components needed for the network survey,
• Provided the required manpower including testing personnel and vehicle drivers.
• Rent the requisite vehicle i.e. Toyota Innova with OBD (On-board diagnostics) port facility for
performing the network survey
• Made available the SIM cards from Airtel, Vodafone/Idea & Jio to undertake network survey
• Made available the required mobile devices to undertake network survey
• Provided the network survey output in a map format to Toyota for the 2G and 4G network
coverage of Airtel, Vodafone/Idea & Jio. Jio has only 4G network across India, so that, its 2G and
3G testing had not been taken.

3. Survey Output:
As per the proposal document, the output of the survey was delivered in the following manner:
a) Weekly report – Every Monday a report had been shared with Toyota on the status of the
research with details of the distance covered and the .kml file and .Csv file for the journey
undertaken during the week.
b) Map View - A .kml file was provided to Toyota which could be opened with applications such as
Google Maps or Google Earth or Open Street Maps to view the output.
Below is a sample of the output of the data that was provided to Toyota and an explanation of all
components captured during the survey and viewable on the .kml file.
Zero-Sum used the mobile cellular devices to capture network information every 30 seconds. This output

11. Our Observation:
Zero-sum has taken a survey across the Golden Quadrilateral Route, the largest highway route of India for
the major carriers of India i.e. Airtel, Vodafone-Idea and Jio to collect the information including the
network details of the respective 4G/3G/2G networks of the respective carriers. Zero-sum shared the data
information with Toyota connected India in the requested format i.e. Kml and Csv format. Zero-sum has
studied the network information in details and the same has been shared. Our observations for each
carrier are briefed below and shown in map for better understanding. The maps are marked with different
color and the meaning of each color is defined below:
11.1. Airtel
Airtel is the first Indian telecom service provider to achieve Cisco Gold Certification. It also acts as a carrier
for national and international long-distance communication services. The company has a submarine cable
landing station at Chennai, with a connection to Singapore. As of 30 April 2019, Airtel has 334.79 million
subscribers with a market share of 28.80% in India. The brand is operated by several subsidiaries of Bharti
Airtel, with Bharti Hexacom and Bharti Telemedia providing broadband fixed line services and Bharti
Infratel providing telecom passive infrastructure service such as telecom equipment and telecom towers.
Bharti Airtel Limited is part of Bharti Enterprises and is headed by Sunil Bharti Mittal.
Currently, Airtel operates all over the country and known best for rural India. It operates with the 3
available carrier i.e. 2G, 3G and 4G.
11.1.1. Airtel 2G
Airtel 2G strength has been shown in the below picture. The picture also shows that it is having very less

11.1.2. Airtel 3G:
On 18 May 2010, the 3G spectrum auction was completed and Airtel paid the Government of India
₹122.95 billion (US$1.8 billion) for spectrum in 13 circles, the most amount spent by an operator in that
auction. Airtel 3G services are available in 200 cities through its network and in 500 cities through intra-
circle roaming arrangements with other operators.
In 2019, Airtel shut down their 3G network in Kolkata. In Kolkata users can only access 4G and 2G
networks. In an event, Airtel confirmed that it will shut down their 3G network all over India and re-farm
the spectrum towards 4G by the year 2020. Then onwards Airtel will provide only 2G and 4G connectivity
in the country.

Conclusion:
Zero-Sum gathered all the network coverage information across the Golden Quadrilateral Route of India.
Zero-sum and Toyota connected mutually agreed and considered the below dbm value as standard value
to define as weak network:
The network research data are collected after completing the trip of 6054 Km across the Golden
Quadrilateral Route of India. Based on the observed data, Zero-sum has concluded no network area out
of this total travelled distance.
➢ 2G services: 2G technologies enabled the various networks to provide the services such as text
messages, picture messages, and MMS (multimedia messages). With General Packet Radio
Service (GPRS), 2G offers a theoretical maximum transfer speed of 40 kbit/s. With EDGE
(Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution), there is a theoretical maximum transfer speed of 384
kbit/s.

Network survey test across India
Based on our survey, we have concluded that Jio is having 0% no coverage area. However, its strength
varies frequently. In some part of the Golden Quadrilateral route, it gives the weak network which doesn’t
allow to connect with internet and also having issues to call someone because Jio completely works on
Volte to make a call.
Comparatively, Airtel 4G (having 101.55 Km as no coverage area) is better than Vodafone-Idea 4G (having
784.35 km as no coverage area).
Based on the above conclusion and the mutual understanding of Zero-sum and Toyota san, the weak
network can be considered:
• Airtel 2G is having 0.85% of area with signal strength below -101dbm which shows its stability
and excellent presence across the Golden Quadrilateral route. Out of 6054 Km, only 1.35 Km has
no coverage area. It provides the service to connect the people over call and send the normal text
message. However, still there is some place where its strength was poor such as the way from
Mumbai to Vapi in Maharashtra state and Ratanpur to Bichwara in Rajasthan State.
• Vodafone-Idea 2G has 0% of area with the signal strength below -101 dbm. It means its more
stable and also having good presence across the quadrilateral route. However, only 1.3 Km out of
total travelled distance recorded as no coverage area across the travelled route from Delhi to
Etawaha.
• Airtel 3G is having 38.64% of area with signal strength below -85dbm which shows its instability.
Some major area where found the poor signal strength for Airtel 3G across the travelled route are
mentioned below:
▪ Devanagari to Hubli (Karnataka State)
▪ Kolhapur to Pune (Maharashtra)
▪ Lonawala to Mumbai (Maharashtra)
▪ Surat to Vadodara (Gujarat)
▪ Gujarat- Rajasthan Border
▪ Udaipur to Jaipur (Rajasthan)
▪ New- Delhi to Agra route
▪ Aurangabad to Durgapur
▪ Nellore-Chennai route
• Vodafone-Idea 3G has also recorded 38.41% of area with the signal strength below -85 dbm. Its
network varies frequently and recorded poor availability and instability in the below major
travelled route:
▪ Deverahalli to Chitradurga (Karnataka State)
▪ Dharwad to Bagewadi (Karnataka State)
▪ Karnataka- Maharashtra Border
▪ Gujarat-Rajasthan Border
▪ Udaipur-Ajmer route
▪ Aurangabad- Dhanbad route
94 | P a g e
Confidential Zero-Sum Wireless Solutions India Private Limited
Network survey test across India
▪ Odisha route
▪ Vishakhapatnam to Vijayawada
▪ Nellore-Chennai route
• Airtel 4G is having 5.48 % of LTE area with signal strength below -113 dbm which shows its
instability and frequently switching from 4G to 3G/2G in the below route:
▪ Khandala (Maharashtra)
▪ Gujarat-Maharashtra Border
▪ Gujarat-Rajasthan Border
▪ Rajasthan-Haryana Border
▪ Haryana-Uttar Pradesh Border
▪ Uttar Pradesh route mainly Varanasi area
▪ Odisha route
• Vodafone-Idea 4G has 6.77% signal strength below -113 dbm which shows low comparatively to
Airtel 4G and recorded unstable in the below major traveled route:
▪ Karnataka-Maharashtra Border
▪ Khanadala (Maharashtra)
▪ Gujarat-Rajasthan Border – Udaipur (Rajasthan)
▪ Ajmer area
▪ Haryana-Uttar Pradesh Border
▪ Etawah-Kanpur route
▪ Uttar Pradesh route mainly Varanasi area
▪ Odisha route
• Jio has comparatively 2.11% only showing below of -113 dbm and having good presence across
the route and also stable. However, its strength gets poor over some place but doesn’t switch
because its 2G and 3G service is not available.
finally, it can be said that Vodafone-Idea offers better 2G and 3G services across the Golden Quadrilateral
route of India. It covers major coverage and allow better voice quality, text messages services and also
suitable for moderate multimedia application which doesn’t need high speed connection.
When we talk about the major coverage for 4G services, then, it is none other than the fastest growing
carrier Jio with 0 Km as no coverage area across the Golden Quadrilateral route of India. However, its
strength varies frequently and doesn’t provide stable network till October 2019. In future, it may be
improved in its stability. Airtel 4G is recorder to have 101.55 Km as no coverage area while Vodafone-
Idea 4G is having 784.35 Km. Airtel provides the stable network wherever it presents and suitable for the
multimedia applications and other application which require high speed internet connections such as
maps, telematics applications and etc.
