“Jane Eyre” Fukunaga, 2011

The film "Jane Eyre" by Cary Joji Fukunaga includes the young girl’s passion for her
freedom and the love story between Jane and Mr. Rochester.
Short summary by me. Jane is a orphan girl, she had lost her parents early and was living
with her aunt Mrs. Reed and with her aunt's family. She was sent to Lowood School by Mrs.
Reed when she was young. There, she met a girl named Helen Burns, and she first learned
about religion. Also, she was very impressed about Helen Burn's attitude the ones that acts
cruel to Helen. However, her first friend in her life had died from illness, and Jane lost her.
After Helen's death, Jane continued to study in Lowood School, and she finally became a
teacher. When her teacher leaves the school for her marriage, she also decided to start a new
life and to leave the school, too. She goes to Thornfield and meets Mr. Rochester, who is the
owner of the house where Jane works as a governess. After, Mr. Rochester and Jane
immediately gets to like each other. Then, one day Jane got a letter from Gateshead and knew
that Mrs. Reed is ill. She was sad know about her, kind hearted Jane wanted to visit to her
house and be near even she traumatised her. However, Mrs. Reed ended up , and there were
no one who had cried for her death. When Jane came to meet Mr.Rochester, they planned to
marry. Unfortunately, that didn't go well because of someone's disruption. So then Jane had
decided to run away from him. And after, she met some other people who I am going to
introduce later.

Now, in this essay, I am going to compare and contrast Mr. Rochester and St. John
Rivers. I will mention about each of their weaknesses and strength, and the reason why
Jane Eyre chose to marry Mr. Rochester at the end of the film. I think this is quite
important because the book is generally about Jane Eyre's love story while I was watching
this film, I thought that Jane Eyre by Fukunaga can be a good theme for the author to carry
on. In the third paragraph in my essay, I will include the information about Mr. Rochester
about his personality and his mind toward Jane. And what was the reason if Jane’s leaving
him.In the fourth paragraph, I will explain about St. John. I will write about his believes and
how he thinks about Jane. In the fifth paragraph, I will compare and contrast Mr. Rochester
and St. John. And why Jane chose Mr. Rochester to marry her. And analyse the cast, film.
Explain my points of view. So, this is the outline of my essay.

When Jane went to Thornfield, she met a 38 years old man, whose name was Mr.
Rochester. He is one of the two men that I will be comparing and contrasting. To introduce
about Mr. Rochester, he was passionate, rich, and warm. "I'll convince you! Listen, I don't
love Miss Ingram, and she doesn't love me. She only liked me for my wealth, and when I,
disguised as the gipsy woman, told her that I had only a little money, she and her mother
lost interest in me”. From this, we can know how rich Mr. Rochester was, However,
the weakest point of Mr. Rochester was that he carries a secret. It was about his wife that
he had married before, On the day of the wedding, Jane wasn't able to marry him because his
secret wife hadn't died yet.
After the reality of Jane and Mr. Rochester's marriage was known to Jane, she ran away from
Mr. Rochester's house in Thornfield. When she was about to die with hunger, she was helped
by a man and two girls. Their names were St. John, Diana, and Mary. This guy, St. John is
the one that will be compared with Mr. Rochester. St. John really was a good man. He saved
Jane when she was starving, and he helped her to get a new job. But he asked Jane to marry
her without love, to do a mission in India. As a result, she rejected the propose.
Now, I will go and start comparing the two and the reason why Jane chose Mr.Rochester to
marry her. First of all, in this film, we can notice that Jane likes Mr.Rochester's rudeness.
Also, she likes Mr. Rochester's dark and rough looking face. And he was the first one who
treated her well, personally looked at her as a woman. Probably, couldn’t control his feelings,
fall in love with her. To compare with this, Jane did not have the feeling of really loving St
John. It is same when we think in the opposite way Mr. Rochester liked Jane's unusual
strength, and we could recognise that he really loved Jane. On the other hand, the reason why
St. John wanted to marry Jane was because he though Jane would be a good as a woman.
He also thought that it’s God's message to marry Jane. Actually, I think this the most
important reason why it was a good decision for Jane to marry Mr. Rochester.

First place I'd like to write about “Gateshead”. Jane had terrible childhood in
that house, but I think it help Jane to make strong mental. Her family treated her badly. She
suffers patiently first, but at last, she shouts at them, and talked about their unfair treatment "I
will tell them the truth, that you were very cruel to me”, she could talk about her opinion
bravely. A red room was symbol of struggle. Housewife Reed and the children John, Eliza
and Georgina even the servants each hated and bullied especially John. Once Jane annoyed
and fight John, for this reason Mrs.Reed sent her to Red room where Jane saw her uncle’s
ghost. Mrs. Reed really determined take seriously it's time to send Jane to the school because
she such detested her, her only dream was not to see Jane. Gateshead became place for secret,
which is about her family. In the middle of story, Mrs. Reed called Jane to Gateshead, and
said about the letter, "Jane Eyre, take the letter from the top drawer of my desk, and read it.
The letter said, Jane had an uncle, named John Eyre. It was fascinating news, Jane knew that
she had relatives except Mrs. Reed until now. Probably, Galeshead effected Jane to make
strong personality.

About Lowood school, Not as long as Gateshead. Lowood was eye of rudeness and injustice
and human dignity.I want to highlight some details. Jane get educated at Lowood school,
learned social qualities. She found frienship, girl named Helen Burns was pretty kind for
Jane, she learned from her friend, Helen Burns "People who believe in God should love their
enemies”. Helen get her to realise and forgive her aunt Reed. They used to be best friends,
sadly Helen lose one’s life when she was young. For Jane it was unbearable. Then, 8 years in
Lowood Jane became an adult. She learned to paint, to communicate, to protect herself as
well. She survived Helen’s death, the cruel rules, also how girls in Lowood died massively
from starvation and illness. These tussles made Jane stronger and became literate person.

“Thronfield”. Thronfield was a work place for Jane, staying in Thronfield taught Jane, how to
live in society. Her first job, governess. Also she made friends : Mrs. Fairfax, Adele. Mrs.
Faifax was a worker. Adele is a daughter of Rochester with his mistress, a little French girl,
who is first student of Jane. Here we can see how is Jane talented character, she speaks french
too. She met new world and felt happy about first time. "I was excited to be in a new place,
and looked forward to my new life there”. She adopted to new environment. Most big effect
was, love. She first felt the feeling of love in Thronfield. My mind was full of confusing
pictures and disturbed emotions. When Mr. Rochester proposed to her, she felt confused.
After, she heard about Miss Ingram, who is a beautiful woman join the party. She felt jealous
to her, and was wondering of confidence of her appearance. "How could you imagine that a
gentleman of family and wealth would love you, a plain little governess"This show that Jane
love Mr.Rochester. After all of this, Rochester showed her his feelings and they were in love
with each other, when they decided to marry, something went wrong. Rochester was hiding a
secret about his ex crazy wife Bertha. It’s happened when Rochester was young, his father
wanted to marry him with Bertha as her family was rich, in youth Rochester couldn’t be
against. He tried to explain it, he was terrified about situation. Jane couldn’t forgive him even
it was a respectful reason by the way it’s not his fault. In a conversation with Mr. Rochester
about his upcoming marriage , Jane expressed: "I am not a bird, and no nets will hold me, I
am a free human being, with an independent will”. In the morning Rochester knew that he
lost Jane. He was shocked and ready to look for and back her. She felt heart break, too. Jane
have to leave Thronfield. She still love Mr. Rochester, and missed him. Therefore, Jane learn
about society, love, and farewell. These experiences effected Jane, to learn about true love.
And some scenes with Adele were great. Adele really liked her as a teacher. The relationship
between them was precious. And Mrs Fairfax too, she always cared about Jane, she tried to
protect her from love that was going hurt her.

The last, about Diana, Mary and St. John who are saved her when she was starving and
mentally tired about what happened with Rochester. She showed her talent to them, St.John
and his sisters loved her character and asked to stay. St. John was missionary, firstly he
needed to get married. Jane was the best fit for this role as his wife, he loved her straightness
and employment. St. John asked her to become his wife. She didn’t admit.
Jane used to live with people who were turned out her cousins then, to her was sent a letter
from John Eyre about inheritance, she became rich and acquired two lovely cousins and a
cousin. Jane was wondering if she had other relatives. She violated the will of her late uncle
and insisted that the fabulous inheritance be divided equally between the nephews. I didn’t
expect that, film consists unexpected parts, this is a one of best. Also, she get paid job as a
teacher. She taught girls in school, and adopted to new environment, she felt freedom.
"But at least I’d be free and independent ".
These words reminds me how she wanted to be free, and now she is. Besides, Jane
have her own life, and do whatever she want. In the final part of the film, Jane Eyre by her
own voices inside decided to back to Mr. Rochester and coming to Thronfield she saw
unexpected view, Thronfield burned. After Jane’s left Bertha burned and died inside,
Rochester’s eyes were blinded. She proved the victory of the highest human qualities. She
returns to the blind and exhausted Rochester. Jane Eyre brings Mr. Rochester her comfort and
love. She independently creates happiness for herself and her loved one.

To conclude, four places effected to Jane's life, First Gateshead helped her to make powerful
and loyal personality, and chance to meet new world. Second, Lowood take in her about
rudeness people and how can life hard. Third Thronfield taught her a true love, and how to
live in society, respect herself and attitude by her side. Last, in Moor house, she met her
family that never expected her only relatives, and was free, grew up as a teacher. The four
places made from her strong woman.
To summarize about my essay, it was a good decision of Jane to marry Mr.Rochester who
really loved Jane and made Jane happy. This film "Jane Eyre" mainly includes not only the
love story of Jane, also how Jane tried to be independent, loved one.
I can say I noticed the shades of “feminism”. In 18th century women had a less rights, most
of them lived how culture and stereotypes said. But, I guess Jane had powerful qualities, she
didn’t want to obey men as an just object. She directly protected own rights. She confused
when Rochester asked marry him even he was fault, her words as “I am no bird; and no net
ensnares me: I am a free human being with an independent will”. Jane Eyre one of the best
feminist character I know. I adore how she could show her feelings. Her thoughts and words
she said made me think she was true philosopher. Analysing Jane we can see how is she
mentally strong even she had traumatising childhood, and when she was a little, skinny she
wasn’t afraid to fight to her cousin or to say truth and hurtful things inside to Mrs Reed. She
could stay as strong as was when in Lowood school everyone used to call her “a liar”. Even
after Helen’s death she stayed stable. It showed her bravery. In film we released that if you
don’t have who protects you, it’s always you! The film has moral scenes that explains you to
keep going for yourself as main character said "I care for myself. The more solitary, the more
friendless, the more unsustained I am, the more I will respect myself."
By nature Jane is calm, fair and brave. Also, she got talent to draw, what surprised
Rochester. Jane Eyre’s hard way and passion to be educated to be free person, also her
loyalty, her behaviour. She is feminine, strong as a feminine, her beauty, her crystal clear
soul, I adore everything about her. An actress Mia Wasikowska did well with her part. I
pleased her acting skills. Micheal Fassbender as the cast did good job too. Following the
scenario Jane with Rochester unattractive, but in the film these two were nice-looking, I
would say all cast of film very pleasing actors. I admire their acting. As a viewer I would give
4,5 out of 5.I liked the cast, film score, photography, artistic value. Didn’t like how the
effects were very dark and a little depressing, I think it would be better to add the light effects
to some romantic scenes. By other side it made its highlight.
The film’s ending is very touching. She finally became independent, and was sure on her
choice and eventually she got love as she deserved. All over the film, Jane Eyre always - in
her aunt’s house, in the orphanage, in the castle of Rochester - strives for independence.Only
honestly working provided her to this independence.
I really enjoy this film by Cary Fukunaga.
Writing this essay I tried to signify my point of view about this film and worked on my
project.
